Why the risen is not the best bladewing deck...
, I love “Bladewing The Risen”:
From his original art that kicks some serious butts, to the classic feel he conveys. Pretty much like the first reanimator decks out there, no blue, just pure black and red goodness reanimating big creatures to aggro the opponent before he finds an answer to your big fatty.
Thing is, I’ve been trying for a while to make a good bladewing edh deck, but somethings aren’t just there. If you overload and put too many dragons, you end up being too clunky. Black and red often translates into a struggle between what do I want now? Control the board? Get ahead on card advantage and find my pieces? Just aggro you with flying lizards? And often you just get one, and even more often, the wrong end of it.
Of course you can fill in with tutors, and be somewhat close to tier 2 or even 1.5, but those shells, would be better served with other rakdos commanders if that’s your thing.
The challenge here is how to consistently make the 7 mana 4/4 the thing that wins you the game. And liking dragons, you miss so many of the greats withou bant colors. Keiga, the Tide Star, Yosei, the Morning Star, Silumgars, Broodmate Dragon, Niv-Mizzets, Crosis, Bolas, Atarka, Karrthus to name just a few. And the Ur Dragon and his Scion.
So here’s the deal, Scion is the latest, craziest fun idea I’ve came to design in a while.
Scion decks suffer often from the same thing, people try to put too much drag stuff, but rarelly end up using it, appart from the Ur Daddy himself, which pushes the opposite, Scion wants you to combine killer morphs, like a Swiss-knife of sorts, like birthing pod, with dragons...
