Monokumaâs Day Off || OPEN
shslnews:
Izo gave a visible flinch when Monokuma popped out of view. Locating him took just half a second, but that was a half-second long enough to ratchet up his heart rate. Waves crashed in his ears, and the stench of strawberries grew nauseating.
âIâd have youââ His voice quivered, and the anchor cut himself off. He took his time in getting to his feet. Already he was a little more at easeâif he needed to, he could bolt. Only after he began to feel truly steady did Izo attempt to speak again.
âThis is going to sound self-serving,â he started, then paused. âAnd I guess it is. I donât know how else to live.â He shoved his hands in his pockets. Monokumaâs warning about time tugged at his thoughts, but he pushed on.
âIâd have you give us answers. Better yet, lay it all out for us: who you are, where we are, why weâre here, and how to get outâwhether the exits are sealed or not.â The anchorâs face was drawn, eyes tiring. âIf youâre done anyway, whatâs the harm?â
âThe harmâs in -â
Monokuma bites its lip. Looks back over its shoulder.
âIijima, I donât blame you for wanting answers. This is the very definition of infuriating, I know. But the answers you want, they... that'll be the end of it.â
It turns its head back to Izo and rubs its nose. The pool and the bucket disappear, monochrome planks covering the hole in the ground. The framerate hitches uncomfortably.
âThought the jelly might make you laugh, put you at ease. Sorry. The, uh, the flood thing actually completely slipped my mind when I put the room together. I knew you particularly would come looking for me if I reared my head, so to speak, but I didnât intend to cause distress.â
The window disappears. Monokuma walks out into the rock garden and sits itself down on one of the larger stones. The small stream running through the garden dries up. Its voice is still clear and close when it speaks.
âYouâre right though. You deserve answers. All of you do. We canât live in this limbo forever. The scheduleâs slipped, weâre all fading... and the memory leak I've gone and introduced will bluescreen the whole system before long anyway.â
It pauses for a moment. Some unexpected thought plays behind its eyes. It smiles, nearly laughs. Tears form in the corners of its eyes.
âI canât believe I let this happen, that I worked so hard to make this happen. Itâs ridiculous, the whole thing! That so many should have to die for something so... pointless. Okay, yes, letâs... letâs talk answers. And that will be... the end. Letâs finish it, all of us. I was afraid, I was despondent, but - â
Monokuma moves to wipe a tear off its cheek and a hollow sob rips out of it. It presses a hand over its mouth and screws its eyes shut. It shakes a little, but eventually it calms enough to speak.
â- but the truth is the only decency I can offer you now.â
It breathes in slowly, then out, fighting to compose itself. It stands, then walks back into the room and crosses to the door. It places a hand on it nods.
âIâll call you all together soon. I need to work out... what Iâm going to say.â
Monokuma smiles at Izo.
âThank you Iijima. This, I hope, will make it easier. Please make sure the others are ready, and - â
It opens the door, takes a step through.
âI am so sorry.â
The door closes.
