â...And it was actually fun. I think we were all there. All the boys from the block, I mean. Josh, Victor, Lucas- what-? Stop stealing my fries!â
You and Max were at a diner, having dinner on a Friday night.
âSorry.â You laughed. âIâm glad you had fun. Youâre welcome.â
He scoffed. âWhy?â
âUh, if I didnât tell Josh you were going, you wouldâve said you werenât. And you went and had fun. Again, youâre welcome.â
âYouâre insufferable.â Max shook his head, smiling. âBut, yeah. Thank you, I guess.â
âIâll take it.â
âSpeaking of Josh.â He said, grabbing some fries. âTomorrowâs your big day.â
You rolled you eyes. âYou say it like itâs gonna be our wedding. Itâs just a date. I wouldnât even call it a date yet.â
âYou, maybe. Josh seems excited for your âsimpleâ date.â
You decided to take a sip of your drink instead of responding.
âYou donât seem too excited though.â He analyzed you for a moment. âStill thinking about Luke?â
âFirst of all, donât look at me like that. Youâre looking at me like Iâm a child.â You rolled your eyes. âAnd second of all... well, yes, of course. I thought it would be easy to forget about a crush. Itâs got to a point thatâs just ridiculous.â
âBy the way you say it, it doesnât sound like a simple crush.â
âWell, it canât be more. I donât know him.â
âHave you ever heard about love at first sight?â
âThat question shows me how little you know about love at first sight.â
âOh, yeah?â He said, challenging. âHow much do you know?â
âEnough to know that my case with Luke itâs not what youâre suggesting.â
âCome on.â He groaned. âJust accept it.â
âAccept what?â
âThat you like him.â
âI do like him, thatâs the thing. I like Luke without knowing who he is, exactly. That doesnât make any sense! Just- stop it. Leave it like that.â You said before Max could say anything else. âYou really just love to argue or disagree with everything I say, right?â
âIf you say it like that, it sounds bad.â
âIt is bad, Max.â
âWhatever.â He rolled his eyes. And you shook your head in disapproval at your friend, which he decided to ignore. âHowâs Mrs. Patterson?â
You visited her that day after school, like youâve been doing the past week.
You included visiting her as a daily activity on your schedule. You went to her house for at least an hour, go back home to study for another two, and then, you went to your dance class.
âSheâs good. Better, if thatâs what youâre asking.â
âShe does look better.â He nodded. âIâm really glad... have you told her, though?â
You looked down to your glass of juice. âNo. She havenât asked and I never really see the need of doing so.â
You had lots of opportunities to tell her, but you never did it. After overthinking about it a lot, you ended up with the conclusion that, she wasnât asking because maybe she already knows (courtesy of your mom), or she just really didnât believe you could find his son.
You did promise her that you would back up if you had to. So maybe, if she knew, thatâs why she wasnât mad or upset.
But you still promised to give her that second chance...
With that thought, you looked for the guitar pick, that was still hanging around your neck, and just held it with your fingers for a second. Something that youâve been doing a lot lately. You couldnât take it off. You tried, but you didnât want to, for some reason you didnât exactly know.
Even though you werenât doing anything to find Luke anymore, it still seemed to be something that you were calling out to do. Everything reminded you to him. Not only since youâve been going to his house a lot, but also for other reasons. Like the fact that the posters you saw at Mrs. Pattersonâs last week, were all over the neighborhood now. Maybe even further.
âI mean, if sheâs not asking, I guess...â Max shrugged. âItâs not that big of a deal.â
âI guess...â
And still, you felt the guilt in your chest.
âAnyways, where are you going tomorrow? With Josh.â
âI donât know. I donât think we said any place in specific.â
âWeâll see about that then... if you wanted fries, why didnât you buy some?! Stop eating mine!â
â˘
The next day, the hot whether made you wear a nice and simple sundress to go out with Josh.
Your sister was finishing combing your hair when you heard the doorbell ring, and you two went downstairs.
Your dad opened the door. You werenât worried about that since he did know Josh and his parents, but if this worked out, you werenât too far from getting a similar lecture like the one Tamra got just last week.
When your dad was done with him, you said goodbye to your family and went outside next to Josh, whoopened the driverâs door of his car for you.
âSo where are we going?â You asked, looking at him while he was driving.
He looked good. Like he always did. And you were waiting impatiently for those butterflies in your stomach to come at the sight of him. Like it would happen with Luke.
But they never did.
We still have time, you internally said.
âI was thinking... does the movies sound right to you?â He asked.
âSounds great.â You smiled.
âGreat, great.â He smiled back.
You never found it hard to make conversation with him, and this time wasnât the exception.
Once in the cinema, you two lined up to buy tickets for the movie and you still didnât decide which one you would watch, but you made the decision for the two of you once you saw how excited Josh looked at a big poster of a zombie movie. He bought the tickets and you bought the popcorn and the drinks. It wasnât easy but you ended up convincing him to do so.
During the movie, he tried to grab your hand, but every time you pretended not to notice. He didnât try many times though, he was too invested on the movie to worry about that.
That spark you were so convinced was there and was just taking its time, wasnât making its appearance. What was wrong with you? You wanted this. You accepted his invitation because you didnât want to miss this âopen door.â
But you didnât want to be with Josh. As hard as it was for you to realize it, you didnât like him.
You were still after your neighbor next door, who couldnât care less about you.
I just need time. This was too soon.
When the movie was over, you went to a diner close the place just like you agreed before.
Still, no spark. Or butterflies. Or flushed cheeks.
Just nothing.
Until you were on your way home, and you saw some kids in front of a club, with some instruments and a man practically yelling at them.
âJosh- wait. Josh! We need to stop. Stop!â
Josh did so, a couple of stores away.
âWhat, what?! You okay?â He asked looking at you with a frown.
âYes, yes itâs- There. Itâs Lukeâs band.â
You two looked behind you, and you could see them. Not clearly, but you were sure those were them.
And Josh seemed to think so too.
âNo way...â He said, his eyes wide open. And then, rapidly pointed. âLuke, itâs Luke!â
âWhere?!â You desperately looked but for you, the image was blurry.
âThere!â
Since you still couldnât see him, you got out of the car to get a better view.
It was definitely them.
Reggie and, who you assume was Alex, were talking with the man you saw befoe and it did not seem like a nice conversation. Reggie was hiding behind Alex and he seemed to be the one trying to control the situation.
And you only could see his back, but it was definitely Luke the one saving the instruments in the back of their truck, next to Bobby.
âItâs them.â You confirmed, but you couldnât move. You couldnât bring yourself up to do anything in that moment.
âWhat should we do?â
And then you realized. Reggie and Bobby knew you. They knew who you were. If they saw you, they would take Luke away again.
You couldnât allow that to happen.
âCome on.â You motioned Josh to get in the car again.
âShould we call the police? Or the Pattersons? Maybe-.â
âNo, no. None of that. Weâre gonna follow them.â
âWhat?!â
âWe need to know where theyâre hiding Luke.â
âHow are you so sure where theyâre going?â
âI am not. But we have nothing to lose.â
You waited until the guys saved one last piece of a drum set, got in the car and started driving away, to follow them.
âBe subtle. And careful.â You said.
Your heart was racing. Sadly (or not), the reason wasnât Josh.
You tried to follow them not exactly behind, but trying to stay at least a car away from them all the time.
Five minutes later, they stopped at a fast food place, in where they got in, but you decided to stay in the car.
Josh parked the car across the street.
âMax did say everyday with you is a new adventure.â He said. âBut I didnât know he meant literally.â
You removed your sight from the restaurant and looked at him.
You smiled slightly. âSorry for dragging you with me.â
âOh, no worries.â He waved it off. âMax warned me.â
âHe warned you?â You raised an eyebrow. You didnât know if you should be offended.
He then noticed the way he said it and you saw the panic on his face. âI didnât mean it like that! I promise it sounded better in my head.â
You laughed. âItâs okay. I get it.â
âYeah, um... what should we do now though? With Luke I mean.â
âI was thinking, um...â You searched through your purse. You had enough money. âMaybe we could... follow them? If itâs okay with you. I can give you money for gas, and all. It is my fault youâre here with me now, after all.â
âForget that.â He shook his head. âThis is big. We could maybe get Luke back to his family. You donât have to give me anything. Itâs all for the Pattersons.â
You smiled and nodded. But mentally decided that you would hide the money in the pocket of his jacket later.
âAnd also... Max told me about what you two have been doing the past week. So I know this is important to you, too. And if thereâs anything I can do to help, then Iâll do it.â
You rested your hand on his for a moment. âThank you. Really. I promise Iâll make it up to you.â
The two of you killed time by playing with some Uno cards Josh had saved in his car, and an hour or so later, Josh saw the guys getting out of the restaurant.
âTheyâre leaving.â He warned you, and started the car as they drove away.
Again, you followed them cautiously for about twenty minutes. They stopped twice at two different houses (where Reggie and Alex, respectively, stayed) before finally getting into another neighborhood where the two guys left parked in front of a beautiful house. Bobbyâs house, you assumed.
âSo thatâs where he stayed the whole time.â You whispered to yourself.
You two kept driving up until two or three houses away and parked in front of a house that seemed empty.
âI canât believe it.â You said, giggling excited. But you erased your big smile once you looked around you. You had no clue where you were. You got out of the car with Josh.
âDo you... um... happen to know where we are?â
âHonestly? No.â
You started biting your thumbnail. You checked the time. It was nine thirty. You were supposed to be back home at ten.
âShoot.â You said. âOkay, we know where they are. Do you have a pen or something?â
âSure.â
He took a pen from some place in his car and gave it to you. Josh walked beside you as you headed from corner to corner and then stopped in front of Bobbyâs house. You wrote the street names down in your wrist, not forgetting about the house number.
âCool, cool.â You nodded. âWe have something. And he seems to be safe. I guess I just can come back tomorrow.â
âI was hoping you say that.â He chuckled relieved. âI really didnât think it would be a good idea to knock now.â
âYeah...â
You stood in front of the house in silence for a minute.
âJosh?â
âYeah?â
âWe found Luke.â
You two turned your heads to see at each other and then cheered and jumped.
âShh! Wait! They could hear us.â
âRight, right.â He stopped himself too.
And then, you two silently celebrated.
When you finished, you noticed you were grabbing each otherâs hands.
You saw him blushing, and before this could go any further, you smiled at him gently and let go of his hands.
âLetâs go.â You said.
âHow do you think theyâre managing though? You know, Luke hiding there. And I donât know his friendsâ parents... or his friend himself, but I donât think they would allow to hide someone in their house whoâs been practically reported as missing. There are literally posters of him everywhere.â Josh said once you were (this time for real) on your way home.
âI know. At least I hope they donât know. It would be cruel of them. Mrs. Patterson is better now, but she hasnât been having a great time.â
He nodded.
âItâs really sweet of you. What youâve been doing for her. And for Mr. Patterson.â
âI just... I think I just canât see her like that. And she regrets everything she did wrong with Luke. She just wants another chance to fix things.â
âYou have a great heart.â He said, and you smiled for the hundredth time that night.
âThank you.â You tilted your head. âYou too. You came all the way here with me to save Luke. I think thatâs something that qualifies you as a good person, too.â
âThank you.â He doffed an imaginary hat at you, and you chuckled.
He parked in front of your house.
âThis night was... full of unexpected events.â Josh said and you agreed with a smile.
âIâm sorry, again. For dragging you with me.â
âAnd, again. Itâs okay. It was fun. Way more fun than what I had in mind for this date.â
You held up a gasp. He said it. It was a date.
You decided to ignored it. âI had fun too.â
âI just... I had something in mind. And I realized that maybe we... donât share the same feelings? I sound so stupid, Iâm sorry. I just...â He sighed. âI like you, Y/N. I really do. But I notice you donât feel the same.â
âI am... truly sorry about that, Josh.â You looked down for a second. âI really tried though, you know? Youâre a really good guy.â
You grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
âIâm just... still fighting with this old... thing I had for a boy. But please donât get mad at me. I love hanging out with you. You just make me laugh a lot and...itâs just so fun to be with you. Youâre a great friend and I really donât want to lose you.â
He shook his head with a little smile. âYou shouldnât worry about that. You could never lose me.â
You smiled.
âFriends?â You asked and showed him your fist.
âFriends.â He bumped it and you hugged him.
âThank you for one of the greatest nights ever.â You whispered.
As soon as you stepped on your living room, your family assault you with a bunch of questions. You impatiently responded to all of them, to then explain that you and Josh were just friends. You just wanted to go to Tamraâs room and call Max, but your sister didnât let you do so until you promised you were gonna give her details later.
Max also celebrated the new information you got when you called him and the both of you agreed on going the next day and...
Well, you didnât know what to do exactly. But you would have that planned later.
You couldnât believe it. You were so happy you couldnât even remember why did you quit the investigation. You just needed a little break. It was too much for you and it wasnât easy.
But you were back.

Missing (6/?)
Summary: Your next door neighbor, Luke Patterson (a.k.a. your longtime crush) has gone missing, and you think you could help finding him.
Word count: 2.8k

Authorâs note: Hi! So Iâm back, and Iâve had a big writerâs block, so thatâs why this part is kind of đŠ. Anyways, hope you still enjoy!
Part 7
â˘
Sunday went fine.
You and your family went to church, you had lunch back at your house and then even watched a movie together, before getting everything ready for your sisterâs boyfriendâs visit. He came and charmed your parents and yourself. He was very nice and polite. You couldnât help but be grateful for the fact that he was nice to YOU. Tamraâs other boyfriends were usually indifferent at your presence and some of them would even get bothered by you, which you always thought was ridiculous because you didnât even talk around them, as Tamra would ask you. And most importantly, he did like dessert. You and Tamra decided to bake Torta Tres Leches (your specialty) and he loved it. And after dinner, he helped you and your sister clean the dishes.
â...We ainât searching for tomorrow...â
Tyler sang while washing a plate, and you couldnât hide your surprise.
âYou know Sunset Curve?â
Maybe it shouldnât surprise you that much. They had performed in several places before. Maybe it should surprise you if someone didnât know them.
âYou know them?â He asked smiling.
âThe lead singer is our neighbor next door.â Tamra informed him.
âThatâs awesome! Could we meet him?â He said with shiny eyes.
âSure. If he wasnât missing.â Tamra said, placing the dishes in their place.
âWhat?â He said, his eyes wide open. âReally? Thatâs messed up! I know them because they tried to set their stuff in front of the caffe once, a while ago, but my boss kicked them out as soon as he saw them. But they dropped a demo on the sidewalk, I think on purpose, and I took it. Iâve been listening to it nonstop ever since.â
âWould you mind borrowing it to Y/N? Sheâs trying to reach them to find Luke. Lukeâs the lead singer.â Tamra explained.
âSure, I can give it to you this week.â Tyler said looking at you.
âDonât worry about it. I donât think Iâm doung that anymore.â
âWhat? Really?â Tamra asked you. âWhy?â
âLong story.â Not really.
Your sister looked like she wanted to insist, so you spoke again.
âIâm telling you about it later.â You rolled your eyes.
Tyler and Tamra kept talking about the band and she told him about the time she saw them playing at the bookclub. You helped them finish cleaning the rest of the dishes, quietly.
âIâm heading up to my room. It was nice meeting you Tyler.â You smiled politely.
âYou arenât watching a movie with us?â He asked, and you shook your head.
âNext time, I promise.â
âPerfect. See you soon, kiddo.â
You said you wouldnât, but once you got to your room, you couldnât help to open your window and look at Lukeâs room again. Still empty and perfectly cleaned.
What Tamra said got stuck in your head. You started the investigation just four days ago, and you were already giving up.
I wouldnât say itâs giving up, you thought, it doesnât make any sense to keep looking for him if he has no plans of coming back.
Maybe there was such thing as too optimistic, after all. You underestimated the situation and expected too much. You didnât realize how real this was until now. And right then it hit you: this wasnât a joke. Luke was missing. Kind of. And you were trying to find him?
You mustâve looked ridiculous playing the detective.
You were still starring at the other side of your window when you heard Tamra laying down on your bed, in a jump.
âYou didnât watch the movie?â You asked, finally turning your head to see her.
âNo. I told him to go home. Itâs pretty late already and he has to work tomorrow.â She responded, looking at the ceiling.
You left your window seat and climbed onto you bed next to her.
âHeâs super cool. I like him. Mom and dad did too.â
âYeah.â You noticed the little smile on her face. âHe loved you all too. Especially you. He says youâre adorable.â
You rolled your eyes. âIâm only two years younger than you two.â
âWell, say that to him. He told me heâs taking you as his little sister. Heâs an only child, by the way.â
âThat sounds fun.â You joked and she hit your arm slightly. âIâm just kidding! But I always wanted a big brother, so heâs more than welcome.â
âHey!â
âI didnât say I want to change you for him.â You rolled your eyes. âI just want an older brother, thatâs all.â
You tried to distract her for a little while, talking about Tyler, but that didnât work for too long.
âWhatâs that about you quitting the investigation?â Tamra finally asked, and you sighed.
âThat Iâm letting the police do their work.â
âBut, why?â
âItâs too much. I am just a sixteen year old.â
âYouâre just months away from being seventeen.â
âDoes that change anything?â
She looked at you carefully. âWhat happened?â
You shook your head before talking.
âEvery time I think or feel Iâm closer to find him, turns out Iâm only further. Did you know this isnât a movie? Where everything just comes in hand? Because apparently, I didnât. And now Iâm here.â
Tamra starred at you for a minute. âItâs weird seeing you giving up. You never give up. And youâre always so positive. It makes me crazy sometimes but itâs one of things I appreciate about you.â
Itâs not giving up, you wanted to say, but maybe it was.
âBut I guess youâre right. You are just a sixteen-almost-seventeen year old. How much could you do?â
She said it on purpose and you knew it. She wanted to get in your head. She just didnât know she already did.
You just stayed silent.
You did feel bad. You tried not to think too much about it, but you did. You didnât like the way you just... well, gave up. The way you were so close, and still didnât get Luke. But it happened. And this wasnât a game. It was real life.
âAre we not gonna talk about the cute guy that brought you home yesterday?â
Your thoughts fade away when Tamra spoke again after a while.
âJosh?â
âThatâs his name? I didnât remember. But, yeah, him I guess.â
âHe asked me out. And I said yes.â
âReally?â She raised an eyebrow at you. âSo youâre planning on dating him or...?â
âI donât know. Maybe?â
âMaybe is not an answer.â
âUm, yes it is. As in, maybe I will date him. Maybe I will not.â
âThe fact that youâre hesitating is a bad sign.â
âIâm just-â You sat in your place. â-not sure. What if I waste this opportunity? I mean, come on. Josh is cute. Really cute. He plays football, likes to read, heâs really sweet and heâs fun to be with. But...â
âHeâs not Luke.â
âYeah, heâs not... wait.â Your heart sank. âWhat do you mean?!â
Tamra chuckled. âYou thought I didnât notice? You are really obvious.â
âBut- how-? What-?â You shook your head, confused.
âI noticed ever since we moved. You were all heart-eyed for him the day him and his family came with those delicious muffins.â
Somehow, you felt a bit relieved. At least she didnât know youâve been sort of spying on him.
âEvery time he says hi to you, you have a dumb smile on your face. Iâd be surprised if he doesnât know you like him.â
You blushed. You really hoped Tamra was just exaggerating like she usually does.
âIâm surprised you never talked to him, though.â She added.
You just shrugged and didnât say anything.
âSo?!â Tamra asked. âYouâre not gonna give me any details?â
âThereâs not much to say.â You said. âI have a crush on him even though I donât actually know him.â
âBut you could get to know him. Once heâs back.â
You held back a laugh. If he wants to come back, you couldnât help thinking.
âIf you like him, you should go for it. I mean, I donât see why not.â
âI donât know. He makes me feel weird.â
âIn a good or bad way?â
âGood way, I guess. But I donât know how to act about it, you know? Iâve never actually dated anyone. Iâve been living out of crushes my whole life.â
âThatâs because you never make time to date anyone.â
âI donât have, the time to do so. Iâm always either at school or dance. And when Iâm not, Iâm here practicing or doing homework. Thatâs why I usually bring my friends here instead of actually going out. Yesterday was the first time I went out in a month... What Iâm trying to say is that dating is not a priority of mine. I like Luke, but nothing ever happens with him. If things were supposed to happen, they shouldâve happened already.â
âBut thatâs because you donât make a move.â
âWhy canât he make the first move?â
âNobody said he canât. Heâs just not doing anything, so maybe you should do it first.â
âDonât you think that the reason he doesnât make any moves could be because heâs not interested in me?â
âDo you know that for sure?â
âNo, but-â
âThen you will never know.â She sat and faced you. âYouâre wasting your time.â
You wanted to disagree, but it was true. Luke wasnât your first crush, but he was the first boy youâve ever considered the idea of dating. Or at least you fantasized with that image in your head.
âIâm just saying.â She lifted herself up from your bed and walked to the door. âDidnât you regret it when you found out he ran away? Youâll have a second chance, but itâs up to you, if you take it or not.â
When Tamra left, you tried to ignore everything she said, because it really was nothing you havenât thought about already.
A second chance.
That reminded you of the promise you made to Mrs. Patterson.
You told her you would visit her the next day after school, when you found her at church. Mr. Patterson even thanked you personally for doing so, and told him she looked better ever since your first visit. But did you have the heart to tell her youâre not searching for Luke anymore? You werenât even sure if she actually believed you could find him, but it still didnât seem easy to tell her that.
â˘
âHey.â Max sat next to you in your backyard, later that night.
It was ten thirty, or maybe eleven when you called him, and asked if he could come over.
âHey. Thank you for coming.â
âOf course.â He said, nudging his elbow against your arm, slightly.
You gave him a smile.
âSorry for not calling today.â He said and you frowned.
âWhy?â
Maxâs cheeks went red. âUh- I donât know, I just, um-.â
You chuckled. âIâm just kidding. It felt weird for me too. To not talk to you today, I mean.â
He relaxed his face. âYeah, yeah. I didnât know if you felt that too.â
âI do. Youâre kind of my best friend now.â
He looked surprised to your eyes. Maybe even excited.
âI thought you already had a best friend.â
âLet me guess. You assumed, I had a best friend?â You teased.
He giggled. âYeah. Exactly.â
âWell, you were wrong.â
You havenât had a best friend since elementary school. Your old best friend, Ana, moved to another city the year you started middle school, and although you were pretty sociable, you never really found a friendship like hers again. It was tough for you, but you managed to keep going. It wasnât like you didnât have friends. But of course, you still felt the need of a solid friendship.
âWeâve known each other for... three months?â
âTwo.â
âJust two? Wow.â He shook his head. âIt feels like more. Weâve known each other for two months, and I donât think weâve talked as much as these last few days. I donât think Iâve trusted anyone this fast before.â
You chuckled. âMe neither. It feels weird.â
âYeah. And nice.â
âYeah.â You looked at him. âI didnât hear you say it, though.â
He didnât have to ask to know what you meant.
âCome on. Say it.â You insisted.
âYouâre my best friend too.â He rolled his eyes, smiling.
âI thought you already had a best friend.â You joked. But you actually meant it. Unlike you, he had Ian.
For your surprise, he frowned. âWho?â
You looked at him kind of annoyed. âIan? When I asked you if you had friends, at the library, you said you had Ian.â
âI never said he was my best friend.â He then smiled. âSee? You assumed.â
âIâm spending too much time with you.â
He laughed. âDefinitely... but, no, Ian isnât my best friend. We do see each other often, because our parents are close friends. And thereâs school too. But we donât like... I donât know. Have deep talks? Or anything. What do best friends even do together?â
You laughed.
âWe donât even hang out together at school.â He continued. âHe has his own friends.â
âBut he went with you to ask more about Luke, the other day.â
âWell, yeah, we trust each other enough to ask favors. That doesnât mean weâre close.â
You stayed silent, processing everything.
âIt makes me feel bad that you donât know what best friends do.â You then said.
âThanks?â
âFirst of all, best friends tell each other everything.â
âOkay...â He nodded, like taking a mental note.
âIâll go first.â You said. âIâm going out with Josh next Saturday.â
âYou what?!â
âYeah.â You said indifferent. âHe kind of asked me out yesterday and I said yes.â
âIâm honestly surprised. I didnât think he was your type.â
âWho did you think was my type?â
âWell, I donât know...â He looked up, thinking. âI kind of see you with someone like Luke.â
âReally?â You said. Not really believing it. He had to be teasing. Maybe he knew you have a crush on him too.
âYeah... actually, yes. It makes sense the more I think about it.â
You shook your head and almost decided to not confront him. But you just said best friends tell each other everything.
âYou can say it now.â
âSay what?â
âThat you know I like Luke. And tell me Iâve wasted my time, that I shouldâve done something before and definitely talk to him once heâs back.â
âWow, hold on a second.â He frowned and shook his head repeatedly. âYou like Luke?!â
âEither youâre too naive or my sister was just exaggerating when she said I was being obvious about my feelings.â
âHonestly? If someone else told me, I wouldnât have believed it. Man.â He scoffed, amused. âIt really is hard to tell when you like someone. Youâre just... all yourself with everyone. You donât give special treats. Maybe Tamra could tell because she knows you better than anyone.â
You considered his theory. Maybe he was right.
âWhat I said about... about me seeing you with someone like Luke itâs true, though. I just havenât thought about it until now.â
He laughed and you laughed along with him.
You enjoyed each otherâs company in silence for a minute before you spoke again.
âI saw Reggie and Bobby yesterday. At the party.â
And you told him what happened. Maybe it wasnât much of a surprise, but he was mad.
âWhy didnât you tell me?! I couldâve helped somehow!â
âMax, you were with Aria. I wasnât going to interrupt.â
âYou werenât going to-.â He ran a hand though his hair, frustrated. âI canât believe you right now! This was important! I mean, I wouldâve get it if you interrupted me for some other stupid reason but this was about Luke! We couldâve found him, we-â
âDid you not just hear me? They wouldnât say anything, just like you said before.â
âIâll talk to them. Tomorrow at school-.â
âIt wouldnât make sense. Bobby said Luke needed some time. We donât know how much time is that but we do know that heâs not planning on coming back soon.â
âBut Mrs. Patterson...â
âI told you I sent him a message. With a little bit about everything maybe. Including his family.â
âYeah, but heâll think Amy sent him the message.â
âDoes it even matter?â
âWell, I thought it would now that I know you like him.â
âThe correct answer is, no. It doesnât matter. The point is for him to know his family is okay. My feelings are not a part of this. Hopefully heâll talk about it with his pillow and come back sooner than expected. For his parents.â
â...So, is it over? Itâs done?â
You knew he meant the investigation, and you didnât respond right away, trying to come up with something. You found yourself worried he would get mad again. Or reproach you like Tamra did.
âI think... at least for now, yeah. Weâre done with that. We got enough information to know thereâs really not much we could do.â
Another silence grew between you two.
âCome on.â You said after a while. âTell me about Aria. How are things going with her?â
He smiled, like he was waiting for you to say that.
Max stayed until the clock ticked 12:48 and he only left because he remembered finals at his school started the next day. That was the reason he didnât call you the whole day, because he was studying. That made you remember that finals at your own school started the next week. Exams at your dance studio did too.
But you would stress about that later.
Right now, you had a beautiful view above you, and you were willing to enjoy it as long as you could.

Part 6
â˘
âI canât believe youâre here!â You said to Max once he approached to you.
The whole neighborhood and, other kids you assumed were Amyâs friends, were at her party. The place was packed with teenagers.
âYeah, Iâm regretting it.â
âThis is a POOL party. You canât regret coming to a pool party.â
âI just did.â
âDonât be ridiculous- Hey Josh! Come on.â You grabbed Maxâs arm and took him with you to were your neighbor was.
âHey guys.â He smiled at you two. âItâs nice to see some familiar faces. I lost Victor somewhere around here.â
You chuckled.
âMax, I canât believe youâre here.â Josh looked at your friend.
âYeah, Y/N convinced me to.â
âThen I should thank you, dear Y/N. Iâm glad that you were able to take Max out of his room. We barely see him anymore.â Josh hit Max in the arm, slightly. âWeâre going to meet at Mattâs this week. Wanna come along?â
âI-.â
âHe would love that.â You said to Josh, before Max could say no. He looked at you with wide eyes.
âGreat! Iâll call you one of these days to coordinate better.â Josh smiled. âOh, cool necklace, by the way.â
He pointed to the guitar pick hanging around your neck with a piece of thread. You thanked God he didnât ask if it was yours. Maybe he just related it to Tamra, who did play the guitar.
âThanks.â You said.
Victor found his way back to the three of you, and he came with a few other kids from the block, and after chatting for a little bit, you all agreed on finally getting into the pool.
You took your dress off, since you had your swimsuit under it, just like the other girls. You saved the dress on your bag, left on a chair near the pool, and then, you noticed how Max was just staring froze at some point of the pool.
You frowned and approached to him. âHey, you okay?â
You tried to locate what was he looking at, but you couldnât, so you spoke again. âWhat? What is it?â
âMax, come on!â Aria called him from the pool.
You then noticed: he was looking at her.
âComing!â He said, laughing nervously.
âYou like Aria?!â
âShh! Shut up!â
âYou like her.â You said lower this time and smiling. âI didnât know you liked girls.â
âHonesty is something I really appreciate, but there are times where you should just stay quiet, you know?.â Max said, clearly frustrated.
You giggled. âSorry. Iâm just so excited! But, wait, do you guys even talk? Well, I suppose you do, otherwise she wouldnât have called you.â
âWell, she laughs at my jokes. And I laugh at hers, when weâre talking in a group but... weâve never shared a conversation just the two of us.â
âThat could change today! Go, talk to her!â
âWhat part of âIâm not exactly sociableâ did you not understand?â
âMax, you two grew up together. Thereâs nothing you should be afraid of. What could go wrong? Go!â
âOh my gosh! Youâre so annoying. I shouldnât have told you anything... wait, I actually didnât!â
You laughed. âYou could never hide anything from me. Now go!â
With an indecisive look, he carefully got into the pool and approached to Aria.
You clapped, excited, and then got in too. Amy also joined you a while later. Some played and other decided to just relax. It was when you were playing Marco-Polo when you noticed him and your heart skipped a beat.
It was Reggie.
You couldnât tell for sure, but judging by the picture youâve analyzed for a long time the night before, it was him. And Bobby was next to him.
âMarco!â You heard Liz say, and you got out of the pool, as fast and carefully as you could.
âPolo!â
âY/N! Where are you going?â Josh asked you.
âIâll be back. Just keep playing.â You said, and you looked for Max among all the people in the pool.
You then found him, but he was sitting on the grass, with Aria. They were talking and he seemed so comfortable and himself, that you didnât have the heart to interrupt.
You put a towel on you, put on your flip flops, and then headed to where you could see the guys were standing and talking to each other.
âExcuse me... Excuse me.â You pushed slightly to the crowd until you got close to where Reggie and Bobby were.
And you froze. It had to be them, but why?
Wasnât Alex the one who kind of knew Amy?
You didnât have anything planned and you werenât even sure if those were Lukeâs bandmates.
What should you do?
Impulsively, you walked to them.
âHey.â You said, ignoring the adrenaline you were feeling along with your racing heart.
âHey! Are you Amy?â The guy you recognized as Reggie said.
Before you could say anything else, Bobby spoke.
âAlex wasnât able to come, and we thought that maybe we could come in his place?â
âExcept that Alex was just one guy, and you can see two here.â
âShut up.â Bobby hissed at Reggie and he rose his hands up.
âUm, can I know your names?â You played along.
âIâm Bobby, and this is Reggie.â
Think of something, come on, you thought. You didnât know how could you take information out of them. But before you could ask them something else, Reggie seemed to notice something on you.
âDo I know you from somewhere?â He said, tilting his head. âI think Iâve seen you before.â
You frowned. Youâve obviously seen him before, and not even in person, but where could he possibly have seen you?
Right when you were about to respond, Bobby seemed to notice something on you, too.
âWhere did you get that?â He asked, pointing at the guitar pick.
You tried to act natural, despite the fact that youâre heart started racing faster than before.
âMy sister plays the guitar-.â
âNo, thatâs- Thatâs Lukeâs.â Bobby said to Reggie in a lower voice, who seemed to be confused at the situation. âWe need to go.â
âWait! You know Luke? You know where he is?â You desperately asked, not too loud so people couldnât hear you.
âSorry. We have to go.â Reggie said, and he really seemed to be sorry.
âI told you coming here was a bad idea.â
âNo you didnât!â
âNo, wait, please!â You followed them outside Amyâs house. âI just-! Is he okay? Where is he?â
âSorry, um, Amy? We canât tell you anything and weâd appreciate it if you didnât say anything about this to anyone either.â Bobby said, opening the door to the driverâs side.
âSo youâre admitting you know where Luke is?â You asked.
âI didnât admit anything. Come on Reggie.â
The so-called seemed extremely nervous, and just obeyed, getting into the car.
You rapidly came up with something.
âHow do you know Iâll keep quiet? How do you know I wonât go to the police, whoâs looking for Luke now?â
You werenât actually sure of that, but the words came out of your mouth before you could stop them. Even if it was true, you didnât have enough information to do so.
But they didnât look like they thought too much about what you said. Bobby froze right when he was about to get in the car and Reggie rolled his window down.
âI donât wanna go to jail! Please donât call the police, we-!â
âReggie!â Bobby stopped him. âJust-. Luke is fine. He just needs some time, okay?â
âCan I go with you?â You dared to ask.
âNo thatâs... not an option.â Bobby shook his head.
âMaybe we could send him a message from you.â Reggie suggested, but Bobby looked like he didnât like the idea. And before he could say anything, you rushed to talk.
âPlease tell him that his family is fine. His mom misses him. Everyone here does. And just... please tell him I hope... that if he ever decides to come back... I hope we can get to meet each other better.â
âAw...â Reggie pouted. âYouâre gonna make me cry!â
âWeâll tell him.â Bobby nodded and rolled his eyes at his friend.
âBye! It was nice meeting you! I still think you look familiar!â Reggie said when Bobby was already driving away.
You waved at him, with a sad smile. Reggie was really nice.
You sat on the sidewalk and hugged your knees. You really thought for a moment that you would see Luke. That you would bring him back home, safe. At least he would get a message from you. Maybe, somehow, you could get a reply.
And thatâs when you realized: Reggie and Bobby thought you were Amy. They would tell Luke that Amy sent him the message.
âCome on!â You said out loud.
Why was this so hard?
Every time you thought you got to something, you would then realize you forgot something else, or your ideas werenât good, or your plans would just not work out...
You found yourself crying out of frustration.
Luke did ran away for a reason. Was he even planning on coming back? He didnât want to be found, that was obvious. Max said it before.
Why were you even still doing this then?
And what if you find him? What would you do anyways? You didnât have that planned.
Rule number four, somewhere deep in your mind echoed.
But if Luke doesnât want to come back, then the rule didnât have any value. So what was the point?
Then, you remembered Mrs. Pattersonâs tired face. The way she expressed her repentance...
You went back in, as fast as you could, to head into a bathroom. And only decided to come out once you didnât look like a mess anymore.
âY/N! Iâve been looking for you everywhere!â Max said when you were getting out of the bathroom.
âWell, Iâm her now.â
Should you tell him? Should you tell Max what just happened? What if he got mad? You didnât exactly know what should he get mad about, but still. You didnât want to ruin what it seemed to be one of the best days of his life in a long time.
Okay, maybe you were exaggerating.
âBut is everything okay? Are you okay?â
âYes, Max, donât worry. Iâm okay. Whereâs Aria?â
âSheâs in the pool. I told her to wait for me for a second... that was twenty minutes ago.â
âThat isnât a second.â You teased and he rolled his eyes.
âIâm gonna ignore you said that. Come on, letâs go back with the rest. They were saying something about a movie before I left.â
âActually I think Iâm gonna go home? Iâm kind of tired.â
Max frowned. âYou? Youâre never tired.â
You shook your head. âDonât be ridiculous.â
âBut itâs super early! How long have you been here? Like, what, one hour and a half?â He noticed you were about to make another excuse so he rapidly spoke again. âYou made me come here. You said you were dragging me with you everywhere. If youâre going home, Iâm going too.â
âWe both know thatâs not exactly what I meant. And you donât wanna leave yet. I do.â
âWhen did the roles change, huh?â Max teased. âCome on, Y/N. Just stay for a bit more. We live a block away. Weâll be back home super fast after the movieâs over. And you said that if there werenât any news about Luke, than the party could still be good to distract ourselves.â
You saw how excited and happy he was, which helped you make your final decision: you were definitely not telling him about the incident right now.
You stared at him for a second and then sighed.
Maybe he was right. If you did go to your house, you would only keep thinking and that would make you feel worse. You indeed needed some distraction.
âOkay, letâs go.â You walked past him and he followed you with a big smile.
It wasnât until most of the people left, that you all seated in front of the tv and watched a movie. You sat next to Amy, who linked your arms together and wouldnât shut up for a minute. She had something to say for every single scene. But you werenât listening. Or even paying attention to the movie.
You looked down, discretely. Aria and Max were seated together on the floor, and you noticed how their hands were placed just centimeters away from touching.
You smiled and looked back to the tv. That was their moment. Not something you should be seeing.
Amyâs voice whispering to you something about how the girlâs shorts were awful started to fade in the background, and you slowly let your eyes shut.
âSo did you like the movie?â
You rolled your eyes but giggled. âShut up.â
Josh was the one who woke you up after the movie ended. It was six, or maybe seven forty when he did so, and he told you Max already left with Aria and that he was taking her home.
You couldnât help to feel disappointed. You were hoping you could get some time alone with Max just so you could tell him what happened before with Bobby and Reggie. Josh said he would take you home, and you accepted his company. His house was just a few houses away from yours, after all.
You shifted your bag from one shoulder to another, since it felt kind of heavy, and Josh noticed.
âHey, let me take that for you.â
âItâs really not- Okay.â
He took the bag out of your shoulder before you could even protest.
âThank you.â You added.
âToday was pretty fun.â He said after a pause. âItâs been like a month since the last time we all hung out together.â
âI know. Schoolâs been pretty heavy for everyone. We are entering finals season.â
âYeah. At least itâs getting over. At least for some months.â
âYeah...â
âItâs crazy what happened with Luke, right?â
You nodded. âIt is.â
âDo you think he is okay?â
âYes.â You said convinced, and you knew it was true. You confirmed it that afternoon. But you didnât say that to Josh. You just repeated Mrs. Pattersonâs words. âHeâs smart. Heâs probably somewhere safe. Like a friendâs house.â
âI guess. Did you ever talk to him?â
âNot really. You?â
âKind of. We grew up together but once we got to high school he wouldnât hang out with us anymore... I think ever since he started his band, actually.â
âWell, a band takes a lot of responsibility.â You said, without actually knowing that for sure.
âYeah.â For a moment, he seemed to be debating something with himself, until he finally spoke, when you were already arriving at your house.
âI thought you guys were dating.â
âWhat?â
âYou and Max. I saw you hanging out together a lot lately.â
âOh.â You shook your head. âNo, no. Weâre just friends.â
You stopped and faced him on your sidewalk.
âYeah I noticed today... Him and Aria seem to have something going on.â
âYeah. Iâm really happy for them.â You smiled, sincerely.
âI actually, um... felt kind of relieved? When I realized that you two arenât dating and now you confirmed it, so... yeah. Iâm really glad...â He rambled, and you just stared at him.
âWhy?â You asked, and you wished he didnât ask. And that he didnât say it.
But he did.
âBecause, Iâve been meaning... for a while, to ask you something. Would you, um... like to go out, some time?â
You got ready to give your usual response. I like someone else. But you stopped yourself.
How many times since you moved, since you noticed Luke, did you reject guys asking you out?
Always with the stupid hope that Luke would one day wake up and think that you were the one. That you were the one for him.
But he never did. And now, he had other plans. He was somewhere else, maybe far away from you, and he didnât want to come back.
And you were tired. Tired of that fantasy. A fantasy that only you were living, that only you created in your head.
If you were mad at someone, it was yourself. For never trying. For never taking any of the opportunities you had to talk to him.
And this was a clearly a new opportunity. An opportunity to move on.
âI would... like that. Yeah.â You nodded, giving him a little smile.

Part 5
â˘
As soon as you both finished eating, she took you to his room.
It felt weird to you to see the rest of the room you couldnât visualize from your window. You could finally see some furniture and more posters.
âI promise I wonât go off limits, Mrs. Patterson.â
âOh, you donât have to worry. As I said, this is a pretty special situation. Just call me if you need anything.â
That took you off guard. You didnât actually think she would leave you by yourself.
âThank you, again.â You said before she left.
You looked around for a moment, and giggled.
You couldnât believe you were there. You made it.
You looked at your window room from there, and couldnât help but think that just a few hours ago, you were there trying to figure out how to get to Lukeâs room. Max would not believe this.
You started going through some notebooks found on a desk. Maybe one of those had some information about the band. But you didnât find anything relevant. If there was something, you couldnât really tell. He had horrible handwriting. You did notice signatures from the other band members. Mostly Alex and Reggieâs, but nothing else.
You moved on to check the desk drawers. You found a polaroid picture. He was there, with three other boys.
You opened your eyes wide. The band. They had to be the rest of the band. Of course, you didnât know for sure, but you had a good feeling. You grabbed the picture. You would ask Mrs. Patterson if you could take it with you.
You then stood in front of his closet, thinking whether or not to go through it too. You decided to open it and give it a quick glance. Not touching anything, just looking at it.
And so you did.
You opened it and noticed that it was practically empty. A couple of jackets were hanging inside and a single flannel shirt. But you thought it was impossible for him to take every piece of clothing he owned. If he ran away on his bike, as his mom told yours, than he mustâve taken a simple backpack with him. Something easy to carry.
Just to take away the doubt, you checked the drawers and indeed, there were several shirts and pants in there, perfectly folded. You closed those and finally went up to that one poster you were so familiar with at this point. But there really wasnât any more information besides the bandâs name.
You then checked his night stand and, besides a lamp, the only thing that you found was a guitar pick. It was white, and it had the letters SC written on black. You took it and then, giving the room a last look, you left to meet Mrs. Patterson in the living room. You showed her the polaroid you found and told her that you suspected they could be Lukeâs bandmates. You asked if you could take it and she said yes.
âI also found this guitar pick? I think he mightâve forgotten when he... left. I just thought that maybe I could take it with me just so when I find him I can give it back.â
You noticed the conviction in your voice, and by the sweet smile Mrs. Patterson gave you, you could tell she did too.
âOf course. Take it.â
âThank you.â
Before leaving, you and Emily ate a couple of the cookies she baked while you were up in Lukeâs room.
âTake care.â You said to her on the door, when she gave you a hug.
âYou too, sweetie.â
âI promise to come visit you more often.â
âIâll be waiting for you. I repeat, youâre always welcome.â
âThank you.â
âThank you, too.â You both released from the hug and you were already walking away when she called you again.
âY/N?â
âYeah?â You turned to see her.
âYouâre a really nice girl. I think you and Luke would get along perfectly.â
â˘
Tamra got home first, as usual, and she parked her car in the garage. As you thought she would. Which was the reason that made you leave her a note on the fridge. You decided to wait for Max in front of his house, on his steps.
His mom, Mrs. Miers, invited you to come inside but you told her you would just wait for Max there. She tried to convince you otherwise but you insisted, so she asked you to at least accept a glass of lemonade.
You emptied the glass just when Max was arriving.
âHey! How did it go?â You rapidly got up on your feet and walked to him.
âWell, hello, Iâm fine, thanks.â He rolled his eyes.
âHi. So?!â
He sighed. âI did it. I talked to people... kind of.â
âWhat do you mean kind of?â
âWell... I asked my friend Ian to do the talking. I went with him, but he was the one doing the questions.â
âBut you got information?â
âYes- Ow!â
You squealed and hugged him, just like you did that morning.
âHey, calm down, itâs nothing much, really...â
âIt doesnât matter. You got something, Iâm so proud of you!â
âDonât exaggerate.â He rolled his eyes, but smiled.
âI got something too, actually.â
âLetâs go inside.â
Max guided you to his living room, inside his house.
âYou go first.â He said and you obeyed, since your information wasnât much relevant.
âSo first of all, I got into Lukeâs room.â
âWhat?! Without asking?!â
âObviously.â You said sarcastically and rolled your eyes. âObviously not. I had lunch with Mrs. Patterson at her house today. We were just talking and I asked her if I could go check it out and she said yes... But I didnât get much. Just this picture... I was wondering if you recognize them.â
He took the polaroid. âYes! They are the guys. This is Reggie, Alex and Bobby.â
After all these days, you could finally give those names some faces.
âGreat! Besides that, there werenât any other clues. So what about you? What did you find out?â
You decided to not tell him about the guitar pick. It was something you would save for yourself.
âThey practice at Bobbyâs garage.â
âDo you know where he lives?â
âWell... no. Look, we were trying to be subtle since Bobby, Alex and Reggie went to school today. I honestly think they might know where Luke is. But they wouldnât say anything. Today at school they were called by the principal. We supposed it was to ask them about Luke... My point is, we tried not to ask too personal questions in case they found out what we were doing.â
You wanted to protest but of course, Max had a point. If they were covering Luke, they were going to do anything to keep his location a secret.
âBut I thought you guys werenât classmates. You and the other guys.â
âWe arenât. Ian is. I mean, Ian has french with them.â
You nodded slowly.
âOh, we also found out Amyâs mom is friends with Alexâs mom? From some pilates class... maybe it was yoga. I donât know.â
âAmy? Amy our neighbor? That Amy?â
Max chuckled. âYeah. Amy Campbell. Ian was actually the one who provided me that information. He and Amyâs older brother go to karate together.â
âTomorrow is Amyâs birthday party! Do you think... Alex might go?â
âI doubt it. As far as Ian told me, Amy and Brandon never actually got to meet Alex... Youâre going to Amyâs party?â
âYeah. I already told her I would. You?â
âI told her I wouldnât.â
âMax!â
âWhat? I donât wanna go. At parties I usually just sit all night, eat and sing if I know the songs.â
âCome on, letâs gooo.â You insisted. âThis isnât a normal party, itâs a pool party!â
âWhy do you want me to go? Youâll probably just leave me on my own anyways to talk to the rest.â
You rolled your eyes. âDonât play the victim. Iâll drag you with me everywhere okay? Come on, what if Alex shows up after all? We donât know, this could be good! Even if nothing happens, then it could be fun to distract ourselves for a bit. Please.â
He sighed and stared at you for a second before groaning. âFine, fine. Iâll go.â
âYay! I promise itâll be worth it.â
You then said goodbye and went to your house.
After saying hi to your family, you rapidly went up to your room to get ready for your dance class.
âHow was everything today, honey?â
Your mom asked you, later at dinner.
âI called Mrs. Patterson a while ago and she was so happy you went. She told me you two had fun together.â
You smiled. âWe did. Iâm planning on visiting her more often.â
âThatâs a great idea.â She smiled back.
âDo you girls have any plans this weekend?â Your dad asked.
âI actually... Wanted to ask you something.â Tamra asked, and she seemed nervous. Which was rare to see.
âSure baby, what is it?â Your mom said.
âWhat do you guys think if I bring Tyler for dinner, on Sunday?â
You heard how your dad dropped his fork and knife on his plate, while your mom clapped and you looked at your sister, surprised.
âReally? Is it that official?â You asked.
âShut up.â
Tamra never actually brought any of her boyfriends to the house, for some reason. You were the only one that met them since they usually were guys from school. One time, she even dated a guy from your dance studio, who was her age.
This time, though, you never met him. You only knew he existed because she announced it to all of you at dinner once.
âOh, Tamra! Weâre so glad to finally meet him! I am so excited! What should I cook?â
âThis counts as a special occasion, so we need dessert. Does he like cheesecake?â You said, excited too.
âAre you sure this is a good idea?â
âDad!â
âDavid!â
You, Tamra and your mom complained at the same time.
âIâm just saying, honey, arenât you too young for boyfriends?â
You rolled your eyes. âDad, sheâs eighteen. Leave her alone.â
âWell, sheâs still my daughter. I think I have a say on this.â
âWeâre discussing this later.â Your mom stopped. She faced you. âWhat about you, Y/N, do you have any other plans?â
âActually, yes. Tomorrow is Amyâs birthday party. Itâs a pool party. I was wondering if I could go?â
âI donât see why not.â She looked at your father and he nodded approvingly too.
You clapped. âPerfect! Thank you.â
Later in your room, you took the polaroid and the guitar pick and checked them carefully. You saved them in your night stand before leaving to dance.
Luke was smiling in that picture, just like in any other you had the opportunity to see at his house.
You sighed. You really hoped he was okay.
The idea of Bobby, Alex and Reggie knowing where he is, really made you hopeful.
âHeyâ Someone said, entering your room.
You knew it was Tamra way before you looked up to see her. She never knocks, so it was easy to tell when it was her coming to your room.
âHeyâ You smiled at her. âDo you need anything?â
âNo, I just... I came to tell you what happened.â
After you came up to your room, you knew Tamra stayed longer because your dad wanted to talk to her.
She sat on your bed, next to you.
âWhat did dad tell you?â You asked.
âOh, you know. He started with this big speech about growing up, and that I should be careful, and stuff like that. But then he started started being emotional and said that he was afraid of me leaving the house or change my plans for college and other stuff.â
You frowned and then giggled. âHeâs so dramatic.â
âI know. I wonât throw away everything Iâve planned for years just for a boy Iâve been dating for two months.â
âNot any boy, I can see.â
She rolled her eyes but blushed. âAnyways, dad also said he was happy for me and that I would always be his baby.â She said like bragging, with a shrug.
It was your turn to roll your eyes. âChildish. Now, tell me, where is this Tyler from, anyways?â
âI met him at The Drop.â
It was a caffe near your dance studio. It had a mini library with books you could read while enjoying any kind of drink or food. You two would go there after class sometimes, or when your classes arenât too long, she would wait for you there.
âIt was a few weeks before we moved. You actually know him. Heâs the barista.â
âWait, that Tyler?! Are you serious?!â
You knew something was going on. He would always give dreamy looks to your sister and would talk different to her. You told her so, every time you noticed but she would just wave it off saying you were just imagining things.
âWhy didnât you tell me before?â You said, a little hurt.
âI donât know. Things were different with him. I was... scared. Of you not liking him, or something.â She admitted. And you knew that was a big deal. Just by the fact that she was showing her vulnerability, (which she barely ever showed to anyone), you knew she felt something strong for this guy.
âReally?â You asked, a little confused and flattered.
âYeah. Iâm actually terrified now. For the dinner. I really want you all to like him.â
âIâm sure we will.â You assured her. âTamra Iâm really, really happy for you.â
She smiled and hugged you. Tamra was almost never affectionate either, but when she was, you really appreciate it.
She stayed a little longer with you and you two chatted for a while until she went to bed and left you alone with the polaroid and the guitar pick again.
You really hoped you could get to something this weekend.

Part 4
â˘
âThis better be good. I was in the middle of a game-.â
âI have newsâ
At last, you decided to call Max first.
âI have one of the band membersâ phone number.â You added.
âWhat?! How?â
âMy sister gave it to me. Long story. Should I call now?â
âWell, yes obviously!â
âOkay, okay Iâm on it. Iâll call you later.â
You finally dialed the number and patiently waited.
âHello?â You heard a maleâs voice.
âHello, um...â It wasnât until that moment that you realized: you didnât know who you were calling, exactly.
You decided to improvise.
âIs Alex home?â
âAlex?â
The confused voice made you panic.
âWhat about Reggie?â
The silence made you add âBobby?â
âSorry, wrong number.â
The man hung up before you could say anything else.
You groaned.
Iâm gonna get so pissed if Tamra was playing with me, you thought, but you wanted to believe that that was not the case.
âWhat if Tamra wrote a wrong number?â
Max asked once you called him back and explained what happened.
âDonât think so. She told me the guy gave it to her.â
âMaybe he wrote it wrong.â
âI donât know.â You sighed. âI guess weâll just call it a night. See you tomorrow.â
He said goodbye back and you hung up.
âSo? How did it go?â Tamra asked from the couch, when you were heading to the kitchen.
âIt was a wrong number. Were you just making fun of me?â
She scoffed. âIâm not that bored. No. That was the number he gave me. Maybe he changed it.â
âThanks anyways.â
You went to grab a popsicle from the freezer and went to your room.
The only idea stuck on your head was to go to the Pattersonâs. And you knew pretty well there wasnât much they could give you. The other idea was to convince Max to stop being complicated and just ask people in his school about the band.
You would go for the second one. You rapidly came up with a plan, and the next morning, you were ready.
Max woke up pretty early for school because he took the school bus, around the corner.
That morning, you woke up thirty minutes earlier than usual (and before anyone else), got ready as fast as you could, and, in a blink, you were next to a sleepy Max in the bus stop.
âWhat the-? What are you doing here?â He asked once he saw you.
âGoing to school. With you.â
âAre you asleep? You do know we donât go to the same school, right?â
âOh, I know.â
You faced the street in front of you, pretending to wait for the bus.
âFirst of all, I barely believe you will get away with getting into my school. And second of all, why would you want to go?â
âBecause if you donât wanna talk to your classmates about Luke, then I will.â
âYou canât be serious.â He said, just when the bus was turning the corner to their street.
âYou better believe I am.â
The bus stopped in front of them and you decided to take a step ahead Max and get into the bus, but he stopped you on the steps.
âY/N.â He said laughing nervously. âYou canât go to my school, thatâs insane.â
âKids, come on. I donât have all day.â The bus driver said from his seat.
âThen talk to people! We can finish this as soon as possible if you at least try!â You talked despite the manâs warning.
âOh my gosh! Why do you insist so much?!â
âAre you serious?! Weâre talking about a missing person!â
âIâm leaving.â The bus driver said, and you took one more step before Max stopped you again.
âFine. Fine! Iâll do it. Okay? Just, please stop this and go to YOUR school.â
You squealed and hugged him, and you finally left after thanking him.
Your heart was still racing even after you silently entered your house from the backdoor and you rested against it. You sighed, a laugh in between. You did not know what would have you done if your plan didnât work. Maybe you were trusting Max too much. He couldâve just said he would do it for you to leave the bus.
But your optimistic self didnât mind that thought.
You went back to your room, and as soon as you lied back down on your bed, your usual alarm went off. You stopped it. You were ready anyways, so a little bit more of sleep didnât harm anyone.
Except yourself.
You fell asleep and you didnât hear your parents calling you until your mom went up to wake you up.
âY/N-.â
You snapped your eyes open.
âIâm so sorry! Iâm going downstairs now, Iâm all dressed, I-.â
âYouâre not going. Your sister already left.â
You checked your alarm clock. It was 7:57. You always left at 7:40.
âI canât believe her sometimes. I told her to come call you. It was weird you were still asleep.â Your mom rubbed her temples. Then, she looked back at you. âYour dad and I are going to work now. Youâll stay here, okay? And go to the Pattersonsâ for lunch. Iâll call Emily.â
âMom, I can cook for myself.â If calling Nitoâs Pizzeria counted as cooking. âYou donât have to bother Mrs. Patterson.â
âYouâre going.â She demanded. âIâll see you later, okay? Take care.â
She kissed your forehead and left the room.
Well, you had a lot of free time now.
You smiled. This was good. You could continue your investigation.
You got up ready to get started but then you realized. You didnât know what to do. You still counted on Max to get the important information. And unlike you, he did go to school. You had plenty of time before he came back.
You lied back down on your bed, looking at the ceiling.
You were going to the Pattersonsâ house.
You knew you werenât gonna get out of there with much information but, maybe there will be something...
You got up and opened your window.
Lukeâs room was the same as the last time you checked it. Which was last night. Now, it was neat. You figured Mrs. Patterson must have cleaned it.
You focused on the Sunset Curve poster. Why was it so hard to find any of them? If only you could see his room a little closer, maybe you could find something there that could help you.
His room.
A smile slowly appeard on your face.
You were going to Lukeâs house today. Maybe you could ask Mrs. Patterson to check his room...
You shook your head. That was something weird to ask. Even if you had good intentions. At least you had the first step done, which was going to his house.
You decided to show up earlier than expected, hoping Mrs. Patterson didnât mind.
âOh, hi, sweetie!â Emily said when she opened her door. She was clearly surprised.
She looked tired, but still managed to have a smile on her face.
âGood morning, Mrs. Patterson. I hope itâs okay I come earlier than my mom told you I wouldâ
It was just 8:30. You werenât supposed to be there until four hours later.
âOh, no, itâs totally fine! Itâs nice to have some company. Come in.â She motioned for you to get into the house and so you did.
You looked around, curious. It was a really nice household.
âMitch goes to work early and I stay here pretty much all day until he comes back. So Iâm really glad youâre here.â She smiled at you again. âI was actually now deciding what should I make for lunch. Does lasagna sound good to you?â
âSounds perfect.â You smiled back at her. âDo you need any help with that?â
âDonât worry, sweetheart. You make yourself comfortable. Oh, and for dessert I was thinking that maybe we could bake some cookies?â
You immediately gave her a big smile and Mrs. Patterson chuckled.
âI think I have my answer. Iâll call you to make the dough once Iâm finished with lunch, okay? You can turn on the tv if you want to. Iâll be right there.â She pointed the kitchen.
You thanked her before she left.
So, you were there. You were at Lukeâs house. The next step was to get into his room. You could sneak in but, would that be fair to Mrs. Patterson, whoâs been super sweet to you? But how were you supposed to ask to get into her sonâs room?
You bit your thumbnail.
But you were there already. You couldnât just lose that opportunity.
You visualized some framed photos around the living room and you took one with your hands to see it closer. It was Luke, when he was a baby. You smiled and felt embarrassed for being excited about baby pictures of a boy who you barely knew.
You shook your heard. Remember rule number 1, you thought.
Still, you couldnât help but keep watching the rest.
There werenât many in sight. They probably kept way more in photo albums. If you didnât know that Luke had some issues with his parents (and you didnât until a few nights ago), you couldâve never tell there was something going on. In every single picture, Luke wore a beautiful smile. He seemed happy. And not only in the pictures.
He looked happy when he was singing, when he was playing the guitar, when he said hi to you on his way to who-knows-exactly-where...
Of course, it could be quite suspicious the fact that he wasnât home most of the time. But still. How many times did he probably come out of his house after a fight with his mom, and still managed to pretend that anything happened?
Heâs been suffering by himself.
It was then when you noticed the flyers on the sofa. A picture of Luke was plastered on it, with the word âMissingâ on top of it.
Your heart skipped a beat. You forgot your mom said they were hanging flyers if Luke didnât come back yesterday. You felt the urge to shred them and throw them away.
He will be back. You will find him.
You left the living room and made your way to the kitchen.
âEverything okay, sweetie?â Mrs. Patterson asked when she saw you. She was boiling something on the stove.
âEverythingâs perfect, Mrs. Patterson. Thanks again, for letting me come.â
âOh, itâs okay, really. Youâre always welcome.â She smiled at you and went back to stirring whatever was in her cooking pot. âYour mom told me you fell asleep.â
âYeah... I was a little extra tired today.â
She chuckled. âI understand. At least you set your own alarm and get ready by yourself. I have to fight Luke to just wake up. And donât get me started on getting him out of bed.â
You chuckled, not adding anything else. The moment was very fragile, and you didnât want to say anything wrong.
âYou do dance, right?â She asked then.
You nodded, thinking that maybe your mom told her something about that too.
âI figured. Of course, Sandra told me something but itâs easy to tell youâre a dancer by the way youâre standing.â
You smiled shyly, knowing what she meant. You were standing in a nice third position, ironically, because dancers your age donât even use that position.
You talked about your dance experience and after a while, you both were just talking about everything. You felt at ease with Mrs. Patterson pretty quickly. She just made it feel that way. You helped her making the lasagna, after all, and after putting it into the oven, you both started making the cookie dough.
âI usually bake with my sister. We both have a sweet tooth.â You commented, cracking two eggs into the bowl Mrs. Patterson had in front of her.
âOh, me too. Dessert is completely mandatory in this house. A rule that I made, of course.â Mrs. Patterson said and you laughed.
âI should make a similar rule in my house. We only have dessert on birthdays or holidays.â
âI encourage you to do so.â She chuckled, mixing with a whisk the batter in her bowl.
She then asked you to hand her the vanilla and baking powder.
âYou guys seem close.â She said, still mixing in her bowl. âYou and Tamra.â
âOh, yeah, I guess.â You leaned your head. âItâs just been harder to hang out ever since the start of this year. Itâs her senior year.â You said, although you thought she mightâve known that already. âBut I guess I get it. Iâm sure she just wants to enjoy her friends before going to college. Her family will always be here but her school friends wonât. Sheâs going to Berkeley, by the way.â
You thought about it, but you didnât mention how glad you were she didnât want to leave the state. You didnât want your parents to transform Tamraâs room on a gym (something they never actually talked about, but you saw it on a movie).
Mrs. Patterson added the flour and she let you add the chocolate chips, before mixing again.
âSandra told me so, Iâm really glad... here. You can start to shape them into little balls. Iâll grease the stray.â You obeyed and she also did her task. âHow old is Tamra, by the way?â
âSheâs turning nineteen in a few weeks. She failed first grade, so sheâs a year behind.â You explained, as soon as you saw the confusion in Mrs. Pattersonâs face.
âReally?â
âYeah... back then they just came from Texas due to my parentsâ job, so they were with lots of stuff like bringing all of their belongings, they also had to work and on top of all that, they had to take care of Tamra. They didnât want her to grow up with a nanny, so they would take her with them everywhere. She would ditch school a lot, and therefore she didnât have a great time at exams.â You placed several dough balls in the tray.
âI think thatâs pretty sweet. There are kids that grow up with practically strangers and then go against their parents for that.â
âMhmm.â
She took the tray and put it in the freezer.
It was 12 p.m. when you both sat on the table and had lunch.
âYour mom... told me about what youâre doing. That youâre helping to find Luke.â
Your heart raced. And you thought that maybe she noticed the panic in your eyes, because she rapidly added something else.
âI just wanted to say thank you, Y/N. Because... I know you guys werenât close. I donât think I ever even saw you talking but... youâre still doing this, and I canât thank you enough. And I just wanted to say that if you need anything, donât hesitate on calling me.â
She had tears in her eyes which immediately softened your heart, and made you tear up too.
You squeezed her hand.
You knew she said all of this for two reasons. She meant it, but she also knew you were just a sixteen year old, after all. You were aware of that too. How much could you possibly do? But you were willing to do anything. Even when the adults around you didnât exactly believe you could.
âJust promise me you wonât forget about school or dance while youâre at it. That you will take care and will not go through this alone.â
âI promise.â
She had a doubtful look on her face for a moment, but at last, she spoke. âYou know, we havenât talked to the police yet. But I think we might soon. I just... I didnât want to call them because I know Luke is safe. I know heâs smart enough to go somewhere heâll be okay. But he hasnât come back. And I just canât help but be worried. I wanna see him. I wanna talk to him. I know he might be in a friendâs house. I suspect it might be someone from his band... Oh!â She sobbed. âI just wish I supported him more. I wish I was more interested on the people he was seeing. Maybe that way we couldâve found him already...â
You got up to hug her from behind, around the shoulders, while she stayed on her seat. âItâs not your fault, Mrs. Patterson. When he comes back, youâll have another chance. I promise Iâll do anything I can to help you get that second chance. Maybe you wonât even need to call the police.â
âOh, dear.â She hugged your arms. âThank you. Thank you so much.â
You then pulled back and went to your seat.
âWhat a mess.â Emily chuckled, cleaning her face with a kitchen cloth. âIâm so sorry.â
âDonât apologize. You looked like you needed it.â
She nodded. âI really did. Thank you.â
A comfortable silence grew between the two of you after that conversation, while you finished your food.
âMrs. Patterson, actually, I was thinking on asking you something...â
âSure, sweetheart, what is it?â
Your heart pounded against your chest again. You were doing this.
âI just wanted to know if... if I could check Lukeâs room? Itâs all for the investigation, I promise Iâm not a creep.â
For your surprise, she chuckled, and then looked down for a second.
âLuke really didnât like people getting into his room... but I guess this could be an exception. It is a peculiar situation, anyways.â

Authorâs Note: Hey, itâs me again! So Iâm back. I noticed that I didnât mention before that the reader is a dancer! So I hope that didnât bother anyone. And Iâm sorry thereâs not much in this part, but Iâll try to upload the third part as soon as possible xo
Part 3
â˘
You came up with a few rules, if you were willing to do this. Rule #1: You would not think of Luke as the boy you have a crush on until you know for sure that he doesnât have a girlfriend. Rule #2: You were taking Max with you wherever you needed to and whatever you needed to do. Rule #3: You would do as much as you could to find Luke. Rule #4: Find Luke.
The information Tamra gave you was enough for you to wait impatiently for school to be over the next day. The bookclubâs meetings were on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.
Today was Thursday.
You talked to Hannah at lunch, asking her about the bookclub. She told you about the book they were reading and the social environment, but she didnât mention the band. You didnât make any specific questions either, since you didnât really want to tell her what you were actually doing. Hannah also offered you to take you the library. But you politely declined. You were just taking the bus with Max. For which he complained, later on when school was over and you both were heading to the library on the bus.
âShe OFFERED to take us there, in a CAR, and you said no?!â
You rolled your eyes.
You were all dressed in your dance uniform, wearing a comfortable sundress on top of it and some shoes that you randomly picked. And you had your dance bag, seated at your feet. Your dance class was at 6:30, but you werenât worried about the time. You calculated that if the band had to set up their equipment, then they would definitely be there earlier then the rest of the bookclub members.
âFirst of all, she offered ME a ride. Not us. She didnât know I had company.â You said, checking up the watch on your wrist. 5:25 p.m. You looked back at him. âAnd second of all, if you werenât too afraid of driving, then maybe, we couldâve given that car of yours some use.â
Max told you that the car parked in his garage was his, and was given to him on his seventeenth birthday, months before you moved to the neighborhood. Since Max was afraid of driving, his mom was the one using the nice car.
âUh, yeah? Why donât you try driving then?â He said, cheeks flushed.
âI did. Several times.â
You just werenât perfect at it yet. Not that you were desperate to drive. Your sister would always drive you wherever you needed to, so what was the rush? You didnât need a car yet. You just couldnât ask her to take you to the library today because she had to recover a piano lesson she missed a few days ago.
âThen why-?â
âOh my gosh, Max, let it go. Tamraâs picking us up once weâre finished. Geez.â You said, frustrated. This guy could complain and argue for hours if he wanted to.
âSorry.â He said rolling his eyes. âSo what are we doing?â
You snapped your head at him. âDidnât I tell you anything yet?â
âI know it has to do something with Luke, because of what you asked me last night. And that weâre going to the library... Now that I say it out loud, weâre going to that bookclub they play at, right?â
You definitely forgot to explain. Your so focused on getting started with your plan that the only words that came out of your mouth that afternoon when you called him were: âCome with me to the library.â He didnât asked much in that moment either, so it was on both of you.
âThatâs right. How could you just jump in with me without even knowing what I was dragging you to?â
âBecause I was waiting for your call. You said you were gonna tell me what you were up to, so I just linked everything to that. You still didnât explain yourself, by the way.â
So you explained to him. That you were on sort of an adventure/investigation about Lukeâs location and that he was your Watson.
âI am Watson?! I gave you most of the information you know now.â
âIt was just an expression, Max.â
Soon after, you were both standing in front of the big public library. Once again, you checked the time.
5:37.
âCome on. Theyâre probably there already...â
âWait a second.â Max grabbed your arm, stopping you in the middle of the steps. âLuke ran away from home, right?â
âYes, thatâs what Mrs. Patterson said...â
âWell, donât you think that a performance in a bookclub full of people would be too... I donât know, noisy? I mean, if he ran away, it means he doesnât want to be discovered. I donât think hey will perform today if thatâs the case.â
You stared at him for a second before you hit him in the arm.
âHey! What was th-?!â
âYou couldnât have said that before coming all the way here for nothing?!â
âI just thought of that! And you couldâve thought about it too! Donât blame it all on me!â
You frowned and walked down the stairs.
âWhere are you going?!â Max asked.
âHome. Dance. I donât know.â
âDonât be dramatic. Weâre already here. We can still do some research. They probably have their information here. I donât think they would even let them perform if not. And besides, we donât even know if Iâm right about before.â
You turned back to him, this time, embarrassed. You were being a little dramatic.
And maybe a little too optimistic.
No, you stopped yourself before any negative thought clouded your mind, no oneâs ever too optimistic.
And you couldnât back up from the investigation in the first day. That was basically breaking rule #5.
You walked back to Max and without saying anything, you walked into the library together.
As much as you wanted Max to be wrong, he actually was right: the guys didnât show up. And maybe it was also because of what Max said, but it was not the reason the people at the library told you. You asked about them and most of the workers frowned immediately at what you said, either confused or mad.
âThose guys arenât allowed to play here. They just showed up a couple of times, but trust me, they wonât come back.â The librarian told you.
Therefore, Maxâs backup idea didnât work either.
Ten minutes later, you and Max sat on the steps outside the library, not knowing what to do next.
Your watch ticked 5:50. Tamra said she would be there at six.
You said hi to Hannah when she got there. She asked if you were going in.
âNot really.â You sighed, and decided to tell her the truth. âI came to do some research on that band... Itâs named Sunset Curve. Tamra told me they played here the day she came with you.â
âOh, yeah! I almost forgot that happened.â She chuckled. âI didnât come to the meeting prior to that, so I wasnât aware that a band would be playing in our bookclub. Thatâs why I forgot to tell you about them, Iâm so sorry.â
âItâs okay. Did you get to talk to them?â
âA little bit. They stayed for the whole meeting and then ate almost all the snacks on the table. We just talked about music for a bit. Well, Tamra did. I was just standing next to her having no idea of what were they talking about... But if I see them today I can try to get more information, if you want.â Hannah offered when she noticed the disappointment in your face.
âTheyâre not coming today. Or ever, again. I already asked. But thanks, Hannah, I really appreciate it.â
She smiled at you sweetly and squeezed your shoulder. âIâm sure youâll get something soon. See you guys around.â
You checked your watch for the hundredth time now. 6:04.
âWhen you said that Lukeâs band plays at a bookclub.â You said to Max some minutes after Hannah left. âI thought you meant they play here OFTEN. You didnât mention they played here TWICE before and werenât even allowed to do so!â
âI didnât know that either! I just supposed...â
âYou supposed?!â
âWell, yes! I heard the other day at school... some of the Math Club members attend this bookclub and they said that Lukeâs band performed there so I just guessed they might just play here often!â
âI canât believe you sometimes.â You felt mad. But tried to calm down. You would get nothing by reproaching him.
You decided to stay quite. Otherwise, you might yell at him.
âSo what are we doing now?â Max spoke after a while.
âI donât know.â You said honestly.
Another silence.
And then, you had the most simple idea, which, you thought, you shouldâve come up with way earlier.
âCanât you ask a friend if they know more about Lukeâs bandmates?â
Max blushed, and you thought that was suspicious. âDonât think so. My friends are... busy.â
You frowned. âAll the time?â
You said, more than asked.
âY-yeah...â
âEvery single one of them?â
âYes, Y/N.â He rolled his eyes, but his nervousness was still visible.
âMax.â
He looked at you sideways and then sighed. âFine, I... donât have many friends at school. I donât make much of an effort to make more, either.â
âWhy?â
âI donât know. Iâm just not the social type.â
âBut you have friends?â
He rolled his eyes. âYes, I have friends. Well... one friend. His name is Ian. Weâve been classmates since first grade. And we moved together to the same high school.â
âWhat about the guys from the neighborhood?â
âWell yeah, them too, I guess. Weâre just not too close.â
âLike Luke.â
Max scoffed. âYeah, with the only difference that Luke could be close with everyone if he wanted to. I am not close with anyone because, again, Iâm not exactly sociable.â
âBut you could be.â You insisted.
âI guess. Itâs not that easy, you know...?â He then gave you a look and shook his head. âYou donât know. You are sociable. Like Luke.â
You werenât sure of what to say, so you just stayed quiet.
âSpeaking of which, why are you so invested on finding him, anyway?â
It was your turn to blush, but you were saved by Tamra, who stopped the car in front of you.
âLetâs go.â You said, and he followed you.
So todayâs mission didnât go exactly as planned, but you had lots of clues. It was impossible not to find anything. This day had to end on a good note.
Tamra left you at your dance studio before going back home with Max. You told him you would call him later.
During your dance class, you managed to distract yourself for a bit. But you came back to trying to come up with something as soon as you got out of class.
âIâll use your landline! Call me when dinnerâs ready!â You said once Tamra parked in the driveway.
You said hi to your parents and ran to your room to pick your notebook and then go to your sistersâ room.
So you did come up with something.
You decided to call every kid from the block that knew Luke, and try to get more information. Your last alternative was to go to the Pattersonâs house and talk to Emily herself, although you were kind of nervous at that idea and you werenât too hopeful about it since Max mentioned she didnât know much about Lukeâs band.
âAll she knows is he has a band and that she doesnât like the idea.â Heâd said that afternoon.
You took the phone and dialed the first number: Amy Campbell.
You decided to go straight to the point with everyone, just to not lose any time and call Max as fast as possible to update him.
âHello?â You heard Amy on the other line.
âHey Ames! Itâs Y/N-.â
âY/N! Youâre coming to my pool party, right?â
You blinked. A pool party?
Something clicked in your head. Amyâs pool party, of course. It was this weekend. You forgot to ask permission to your parents.
âOf course Iâm going.â You said, even though you werenât actually sure. Amy cheered.
âAwesome! Almost everyone already confirmed theyâre coming, except for... Luke.â She said, and you rapidly took the opportunity to ask her about what you originally called for.
âActually, I wanted to ask you about him, um, donât you happen to know anything about his band?â
âOh my gosh, are you helping to find him? That sounds so much fun!â
You faked a chuckle. âYeah, yeah.â
âWell, I donât know much, but... I saw them perform in front of this club once, when I was going out for dinner with my family. We stopped to watch them along with some other people. Before they were kicked out. Oh, I also know his parents donât love the idea of him on a band.â
âDo you remember the name of the club?â
âOh, not really... but I can tell you it was close to that restaurant... Delish Japan? Yeah, I think thatâs how itâs called.â
You wrote that down.
You thanked her and hung up. So your first call went well.
Although the rest of the calls were pretty similar. Most of the kids said they saw the band playing either in front or in the back of different clubs. One of them mentioned they saw them play at another bookclub.
âAny news?â Max said once he answered your call.
âKind of.â You checked the names of the clubs written in your notebook. âAlmost every kid said they saw the band playing in some club or bookclub. It seems that they do that, without asking.â
âYou mean playing in places people might see them?â
âYes. They know itâs not easy to book a gig at any place. Especially since they donât have a manager and theyâre just teenagers...â You sighed. âThis information is pretty much useless, isnât it?â
âI didnât want to say it but... yes.â You groaned while Max kept talking. âI mean I guess we could go check those clubs but one, weâre minors and two, they just set their stuff, play and then they get kicked out. I donât think any of those places have their personal information.â
âMy other idea was to go and talk to Mrs. Patterson but... I donât know if itâll be useful. I donât know what else could I do anyway.â
âMe neither.â
You already thought of something else, actually.
You sighed again, this time more dramatically.
âIf someone around here at least went to the same school Luke does... That way we could ask some people about him and his band...â
âCome on.â You could practically hear Max rolling his eyes. âI donât wanna do that.â
âMax, this could go faster if only you took the courage to talk to people. Iâm not asking you to go out with them. Just ask them about Sunset Curve...â
âY/N. I told you before. Itâs not that easy for me-.â
âY/N! Iâve been calling you for half an hour now! Come down for dinner!â
You heard your mom yelling from downstairs and you froze. You said you were going the first time you heard her but you didnât realize itâs been half an hour since then.
âIâm coming!â You yelled back, and then said goodbye to Max.
You frowned while jogging down the stairs. You told Tamra to tell you when dinner was ready. Now your mom would be mad at you.
After your mom reproaching that she called you âa million timesâ, you defending yourself that you asked your sister to call you and her saying she never actually agreed to doing so, your dad stopped you. Silence flooded the room for a few minutes.
âTamra told us you went to the library to do some research on Luke.â Your dad talked. âDid you find anything?â
âNot really.â You said, finally letting the disappointment get into you. âAny of our plans worked.â
âDonât worry, sweetheart. Iâm sure youâll get something soon.â Your dad squeezed your hand and you smiled at him.
âLet us know if you need any help.â Your mom added.
You slowly nodded.
When you finished your food, you decided to stay and just listen to your parentsâ conversation.
âAre you done?â Tamra asked then, and you frowned.
âWhy?â
âJust- Yes or no?â
âYes, Iâm done.â
âGood. Come with me.â
You and Tamra thanked for the food and she guided you to her room. You sat on her bed while she started looking through the mess.
âWhat are you doing?â You asked, and she didnât respond.
âHereâ You heard her say before stretching down to take a purse from the floor.
She then went through it and took a piece of paper out of it, which she gave to you and you looked at it closely. A phone number was written on it.
âItâs one of the band membersâ phone number. Not sure who, but he was flirting with me the day I went to the bookclub with Hannah.â
Your face beamed.
âYouâre not gonna need it?â
âPff, no. I have a boyfriend, remember? And he was not my type anywayâ.
Actually, you forgot she had a boyfriend. They started dating just a few months ago but Tamra hasnât taken him to the house yet.
âWhy didnât you tell me before?!â You said.
âI forgot I had it.â She shrugged.
You were too excited to get mad at her. You hugged her and asked to use her landline again. She agreed and left you there.
As fast as you could, you took the phone and dialed the number.
The boys and learning things...
Luke: I learned that in book club
Alex: I learned that from my ghost friend

r/AmITheAsshole
Okay, so this is a very long and weird story, so just⌠please be warned.
I (42M) was in a band back in the 90s with three of my best friends. We got pretty popular and all ended up dropping out of school to live together and pursue our dream career. After a few years, we managed to get popular enough to book an amazing gig, where we no doubt would have gotten noticed by a music producer.
However, that gig never happened. All three of my bandmates died from food poisoning that night, and I left. I was so upset, I didnât want anything to do with the band. I started going by my middle name. I hid our demos away and didnât play music for months⌠until one day I realized that the music we had made together was all I had left of them. Their dream had been for people to hear their music, and here I was hiding it away.
So, I decided to release it. The producer I ended up working with wanted me to record the songs myself and release them under my own name. He said our recording quality wasnât good enough if we wanted to make it for real, and that I wouldnât be able to make a brand for myself if my first album included a band and lead singer that didnât exist. This, plus some selfish feelings of wanting to keep what I had left of them to myself, and the fact that none of us had good relationships with our parents (so I was scared they might be upset if I released our music), convinced me to take his advice and release our demo myself.
I became very famous over my career (and no, I wonât say who I am), and now live mostly retired with a daughter (16F) who also wants to pursue music. One of her friends (16F) from school recently created a band, which I had the chance to witness perform tonight. She claims itâs a hologram band, with her other bandmates streaming live from Sweden.
All of that sounds great, except for one thing: her holographic bandmates look exactly like my late friends. And Iâm not exaggerating here, they are identical. They still look straight out of the 90s, wearing clothes I have seen them wear countless times. I have no idea what to do here. I think it could actually be them, coming back from the dead to perform their music.
Now, any skeptics of ghosts can leave. Thatâs not what Iâm debating here. Last week I had strange things happen in my house that I am now sure was a haunting. If itâs true, that itâs really them, back as ghosts to play their music⌠AITA for producing our songs?

Missing (1/?)
Summary: Your next door neighbor, Luke Patterson (a.k.a. your longtime crush) has gone missing, and you think you could help finding him.
Word count: 2.7k
Warnings: None, I think!
Authorâs note: Hey there! This is planned to be a series, so let me know if you would be interested on reading more! Also, itâs set in 1995 and the first parts are pretty much platonic, since thereâs not much interaction with Luke, but I promise it gets thereâ¤ď¸ And one last thing, english isnât my mother language, so please forgive me if there are mistakes of any kind xo
Part 2
â˘
Itâs been two months since you moved to this nice house with your older sister and your parents. Two months since you said hello to this new neighborhood and couldnât wait to make new friends. And you, indeed got along perfectly with some kids your age that lived around the place as soon as you got there. Tamra, in the other hand decided to just stay in âHiâ terms with the kids her age, because she said making new friends was like âbetrayalâ to the ones she already had and that she didnât need any more friends. You thought that was dumb. Why not making new friends when you had the opportunity to? And it wasnât like she would never see Lucy, Justin, Mia, Brandon and the rest of her friend group (whose names you could hardly recall even after ten years of friendship) since they would still go to their school. Their new house was just ten minutes further from school than their old house. You told her so, but, of course, you just got back a popular âYou wouldnât get itâ from her. Which only frustrated you, since Tamra was only two years older than you, and she still pulled the âIâm older and therefore wiserâ card in any situation she found the possibility to do so.
You rolled your eyes at the thought. Sitting in your window seat, discretely peeking behind your curtains, you sighed. Two months since you became friends with probably everyone at the neighborhood.
Except for him.
The cute boy next door who you could easily see behind his window room from your own room.
He usually sat on his bed and played on his guitar. He sang, too.
And you couldnât be more in love with a boy you didnât know.
A week or so after you move, you noticed he was barely at home, and even if he was, he was gone as soon as he came back. You wondered where did he go when he wasnât there in his room, windows open, singing with that beautiful voice he had. Sure, the kind of music he usually played wasnât exactly relaxing. But you didnât care. You loved his music. And his voice, and you could sit there all day, just listening to him. You could say you knew every song he played, songs youâve never heard before until you moved next to his house.
You fantasized almost every night of meeting him. You knew his name and with a bit of luck, maybe he remembered yours.
The day you moved, he and his parents knocked at your door with kind smiles and a basket of muffins.
âIâm Emily, this is my husband Mitch and this is our son Luke. Weâre the Pattersons and if you need anything, donât hesitate on calling us.â Mrs. Patterson gave you and your family a big smile, which you gladly returned. Your mom thanked them for the basket and the nice welcome. They were the first family of many to give you wishes and baskets full of different kinds of food. Even then, Luke luckily said hi to you all. You noticed he wasnât exactly excited to be there. He had a frown on his forehead, puppy eyes and a pout on his mouth. You thought he was adorable.
Besides that, you and Luke never actually held a conversation. Sometimes, when having having a tea party in the porch with some of the friends you made in the neighborhood, they would see Luke either coming or leaving, and they would say hi, so you would say hi to him too. Or if you were fooling around or practicing with your dance friends in the front yard, you would wave at him if you saw him. He would always wave back with a big smile, which melted your heart. He barely knew you, but smiled at you like he did. You wished your interaction with him was more than that, of course. But you were too nervous to approach to him, which even to you, seemed ridiculous. Youâve never had any kind of trouble to talk to someone. But he made you feel weird things in your stomach. And your heart would react instantly at the sight of him walking down the street. You thought about it and came up with two points of why you couldnât get yourself to just talk to him.
1. He was constantly moving. Usually, rushing to wherever he was heading. You didnât want to bother him.
2. ...
Well, you didnât have another point and you knew the only point you had sounded more like an excuse. You thought of the possibility of talking to him when he was playing his guitar in his room, like saying hi, or something. But maybe that wasnât a great idea. Tamra was the musician of the family, along with your dad. She played the guitar, piano and even sang. You sang too, a little bit, but you were more of a dancer, like your mom was.
When Tamraâs practicing, you cannot bother her. She gets mad if you do. Maybe Luke didnât like being interrupted while practicing, either.
But maybe, he wasnât like your sister.
You closed your curtains. Even after overthinking everything, you didnât want things to be planned with him. You wanted everything to come naturally. Except that things werenât, happening. Two months and anything far from a âHelloâ or âGood afternoonâ happened yet.
âHave you guys seen Luke today?.â Your dad asked at dinner, a few nights later picking up some lettuce with his fork.
You froze. You did not see Luke that day. But you didnât make a big deal out of it. He was constantly out of his house. The question felt like a trap.
They found out, you thought, they found out Iâve been watching Luke ever since we moved and theyâre gonna make fun of me and tease me for-
âThe Pattersonsâ son?.â Tamra asked, interrupting your thoughts. âYou barely see him at home anyway. Why?â
âWell, Emily came here this afternoon, when you guys were out, and told me that Luke left last night after a fight with her and hasnât came back. She is really worried.â Your mom said. âIf he doesnât show up tomorrow, weâre gonna hang flyers around the neighborhoodâ.
The fact that your family actually didnât catch you didnât help you relax.
Luke was missing?
âIf you guys happen to see him, please tell us.â Your dad added, Tamra and you nodded.
There was moment of silence that was only broken by your sister.
âDid you guys know Luke has a band? Itâs named Sunset Curve, and theyâre really good.â
You glanced at her and something clicked in your head. You did notice a big handmade poster with that name taped in Lukeâs wall. And he wore different shirts that also had that name painted on them. You didnât know it was from a band. And you certainly didnât know it was his band.
âHow do you know?.â You dared to ask, your curiosity being bigger than your will of being subtle.
âThey played at the library where Hannah has her bookclub. I went with her last week.â She explained.
Your mind went back to thinking while your dad tried to convince Tamra that it was a good idea to befriend Luke.
Was he okay? He could be anywhere. The past two months, you wasted your time. But not anymore.
That night, you opened your windows, (for the first time, not afraid of someone catching you), and stared at Lukeâs room. You noticed it was a mess. Clothing scattered around the room and the bed was not made. You payed close attention (for the first time too) to the handmade poster.
Sunset Curve.
It didnât have any more information.
How didnât occur to you to ask your new friends about his band?
Well, you didnât know he had a band a few hours ago. And you did want to ask more about him, but didnât want to be obvious, either.
A band.
He really was attractive. He just was the type of guy any girl you knew would be into.
Suddenly, a thought made your heart sank. A girlfriend. Maybe the place he was often going to was his girlfriendâs house.
You tried to visualize any photo of a girl in his room, squeezing your eyes from the distance. But of course, you didnât get to see anything. The only thing you could visualize was his bed, his door and the wall next to the door where his bandâs poster was taped in. The fact that you couldnât see pictures of him with a girl didnât mean it didnât exist any.
You felt sick at the thought. You shook your head multiple times, in denial. It was impossible youâve been crushing on a boy with a girlfriend. That was off-limits, even if you didnât know the girl.
You decided to leave that for later. Luke was still missing, and you had to help. But for now on, and until you found out the opposite, you would not think of Luke as the beautiful human being you always thought he was...
You shook your head, trying to clear your mind with that gesture.
âDonât be pathetic.â You whispered to yourself.
You went back to his band.
One of his usual destinations was most definitely the place he and his bandmates practiced at, wherever that was.
Bandmates, of course.
They had to know something, if Luke wasnât staying with them already.
You buried your face into your hands. This wouldâve been way easier if both of you went to the same school.
An ironic laugh slipped from your lips. This wouldâve been easier if you actually took the courage of talking to him.
Suddenly, you realized. Max. The guy that lived in front of your house, probably knew something. They did go to the same school, although they werenât too close. He still had to have some information.
You grabbed your coat ready to head to Maxâs, but suddenly stopped. The clock above your door ticked 11:56 p.m. And it wasnât until then that you noticed the silence in your house. Everyone went to bed already, of course. The next day was still a weekday anyway.
You tried to come up with a plan. You couldnât wait until tomorrow. And you had school, so your investigation would be delayed. It was definitely now or never.
Almost immediately, your mind started reproducing Lukeâs (or Sunset Curveâs) song that quoted that phrase. Now or never. You considered it your favorite song of his. Well, them.
Focus, you thought to yourself.
You knew for sure that Max didnât sleep early. He was always too busy playing video games. You could call him.
And that wouldâve been a good idea if you actually owned a landline. Your parents had one, and your sister, of course had one too. She didnât even use it anymore because now she had her own cellphone, and you tried to convince her to give it to you, but she didnât want to.
There was also one in the living room. And another one in the kitchen.
Okay, so that was an option.
The only obstacle was to be quite. How would you do that? And what would you say if your dad, who constantly wakes up to drink water during the night, saw you awake so late? You could say the truth, but you would definitely not get away with it.
Escaping was an option too. Sure, it was the harder and riskiest option. But still...
You shook your head. That was ridiculous, of course you wouldnât scape.
The pantry, you thought.
You could just extend the phone to the pantry with you. It was impossible for anyone to hear you being there. Thank God the phone was right next to the pantry. How didnât you think of that from the beginning?
Well, it wasnât your fault. You only used Tamraâs landline if you needed to make a call. And you definitely never needed to hide in a safe place to not be heard. You just closed Tamraâs door if you needed privacy.
You got up from your bed and took a notebook where you wrote every phone number when you first got to the neighborhood. And not before writing the numbers down in your arm, you went, as silent as possible, to the kitchen downstairs.
You almost turned the lights on but at last, decided against it. You took the phone out of its case and carefully got into the pantry and closed the door behind you. You dialed the number and waited impatiently.
âHello?â
You gasped, realizing then that you were actually holding your breath. âMax?â
âY/N?â He sounded confused. âItâs twelve a.m., why are you calling? Is everything okay?.â
âDid I wake you up?â You asked, knowing the answer.
âNo, no, I was playing video games... are you okay? Why are you whispering?â
âDonât worry, Iâm just calling to, um... I was just wondering if you knew something about Lukeâs band? Like do you know who the members are? Besides Luke, of course.â
There was a moment of silence.
âIf I wasnât awake before you called me, I would be so mad you called at this time of the night to ask me about Lukeâs band. Whatâs the rush? I mean I know heâs missing, but whatâs with the curiosity? Why didnât you just wait for tomorrow?â
Curiosity. Yeah, thatâs exactly why sheâs calling so late at night about a guy whoâs practically disappeared. You rolled your eyes before talking.
âIâm too impatient.â You excused yourself, in an attempt of doing things faster. âSo? Do you know anything?â
âIâm gonna wait for an explanation tomorrow.â
He told you all he knew. His bandmates also went to the same school as him and Luke, but they didnât share classes together. Alex, Reggie and Bobby, were the names. He didnât know the last names. He also told you that Mr. and Mrs. Patterson didnât fully support the idea of Luke being on a band, which was the reason why Luke and his parents (especially his mom) werenât on perfect terms. Rehearsals were the main reason Luke was often absent at home. Max also said the band practiced at one of the guysâ house, but he wasnât sure who.
When he was done, you rapidly asked what you had on mind earlier.
âDo you know if he has a girlfriend?â You tried to ask as natural as possible.
âAs far as I know, no. He doesnât. At least heâs not with someone from our school, otherwise, I wouldâve known.â
That only half calmed you down. The possibility of Luke having a girlfriend was still on the table.
âOh, almost forgot.â
That rose your hopes up, glad to have as much information as possible.
âThey play at this library... close to your school, actually. In a bookclub. Iâm just not sure about the days nor the time, sorry.â
You already knew this, but you hadnât thought of actually going before. You could just ask your sister what Max couldnât tell you for sure.
You thanked Max and he made you promise to tell him what you were up to as soon as you could. Maybe it could be a good idea to take him along with you.
Just like you did before, quietly, you got out of the pantry and placed the phone back to its case. You were about to get out of the kitchen when you heard footsteps.
Dad, you thought, and immediately turned back around.
You turned the lights on, grabbed an empty glass and started filling it from the sink.
âY/N?â You heard a sleepy voice behind you.
âHey dad.â You faked a tired voice. You handed the now filled, glass of water to him.
âThanks.â He said, taking it. You filled another glass for you.
You entertained your dad for a bit, drinking the glass of water to make him think that you came down to the kitchen for that. A few minutes later you both were back to your respective rooms.
You sighed relieved, once you closed your door behind you.
You checked the clock. 12:33 a.m.
You had plenty of information, but there were also some holes that needed to be filled. Everything Max told you was pretty useful, but you certainly needed more.
For now, you were satisfied.
