The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is a museum of artifacts of ancient Egypt. Described as the largest archaeological museum in the world, construction on the museum was set to be complete in the first quarter of 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum is now scheduled to open in 2021.
The museum plans to exhibit the full TUTANKHAMUN collection with many pieces to be displayed for the first time. The museum is sited on 120 acres of land approximately two kilometers from the Giza pyramids and is part of a new master plan for the plateau. [video]
What misconceptions about being an archaeologist do you wish the general public would stop having?
There’s a huge perception (which stems from a long and exploitative colonial history) that archaeology is all about cool artifacts, and that the definition of “cool artifacts” is super fancy stuff that can be put on display in a museum.
I think that the up and coming generation of archaeologists (including myself) need to put a lot of effort into educating the public about how we can learn about the past from all sorts of material traces, and how even supposedly “mundane” artifacts can have a vast educational value.

Coprolites (fossilized poop) will always be vastly more interesting to me than what some people consider "cool artifacts". Coprolites tell us about peoples diets, which is super fucking important. Think about it, you eat three meals a day more or less. A fancy necklace you may wear once, maybe twice? For all we know it was for ritual purposes.
But COPROLITES dude, they give us a literal snapshot of someone's life. Did they eat mostly meat, or was there a mixture of fruits and vegetables? Was processed grains a part of their diet? What was their intestinal health like? To me, that's much more interestong and revealing of ancient people's lives.
AND THE RESIDUE ON CERAMICS AND OTHER VESSELS USED FOR COOKING
Pigments! Colour! Plants and shells and minerals we figured out how to capture colours from, held fast in ink and fiber dye and paint, and how we processed them and applied them in different times and places! (And, uh, died in great numbers from them, lookin' at you, Arsenic Green.)
I'm developing lesson plans for k-12 for my state AND YOU BETTER BELIEVE I HAVE STUFF ABOUT COPROLITES AND PIGMENTS AND AGRICULTURE
Midden/trash!!! What did people use! What bones from what animals that they ate!? How smashed did a ceramic vessel have to be to get tossed? Seeing the spill shape of the literal basket full of ash and burnt bits and how it was thrown on the midden pile five thousand years ago!
Bones from people who weren’t buried in a fancy tomb! Everyone goes nuts for a mummy in a nice gilded sarcophagus or a prince buried with swords and armour and maybe a horse but do they tell you anything about how everyday people actually fared? No.
Get out of the fancy temples and churches and go look for the arse end of the cemetery/necropolis/whatever and look at the bones of the people who worked in all the levels below the fancy people we put on display. Show me the rib fractures on a few lads from a port town, or the tooth defects from childhood famine and disease on a whole bunch of farmers. Let me take a sample and do isotopes and I can tell you if they’re locals or migrants and if their diet was primarily terrestrial animals or marine, or whether they ate rice, millet or maize (which have a different carbon signature to most native european plants). Take a sample of their calculus (that’s fossilised plaque) and you can find DNA from bacteria, or tiny fragments of what they ate.
I’m going to watch this documentary, and you’ll see how far an Egyptologist can get into a documentary before trying to stab it.

Oral history from various First Nations tribes in the Pacific Northwest contained stories about a massive earthquake/tsunami hitting the coast, but no one listened to them until scientists discovered physical evidence of quakes from the Cascadia fault line.
Roopkund Lake AKA “Skeleton Lake” in the Himalayas in India is eerie because it was discovered with hundreds of skeletal remains and for the life of them researchers couldn’t figure out what it was that killed them. For decades the “mystery” went unsolved.
Until they finally payed closer attention to local songs and legend that all essentially said “Yah the Goddess Nanda Devi got mad and sent huge heave stones down to kill them”. Literally these legends were past down for over a thousand years and it still took researched 50 to “figure out” the “mystery”. 🙄
Adding to this, the Inuit communities in Nunavut KNEW where both the wrecks of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were literally the entire time but Europeans/white people didn’t even bother consulting them about either ship until like…last year.

Indigenous Australians have had stories about giant kangaroos and wombats for thousands of years, and European settlers just kinda assumed they were myths. Cut to more recently when evidence of megafauna was discovered, giant versions of Australian animals that died out 41 000 years ago.
Similarly, scientists have been stumped about how native Palm trees got to a valley in the middle of Australia, and it wasn’t until a few years ago that someone did DNA testing and concluded that seeds had been carried there from the north around 30 000 years ago… aaand someone pointed out that Indigenous people have had stories about gods from the north carrying the seeds to a valley in the central desert.
oh man let me tell you about Indigenous Australian myths - the framework they use (with multi-generational checking that’s unique on the planet, meaning there’s no drifting or mutation of the story, seriously they are hardcore about maintaining integrity) means that we literally have multiple first-hand accounts of life and the ecosystem before the end of the last ice age

So I was mobile when I reblogged this earlier, but re: the adornment on the soles. These shoes undoubtedly belonged to the Pazyryk Ice Maiden, given the date, culture, and location. (I love her, I care about her so much, and I will never not ramble about her given the chance.) The woman who wore these boots was 30 years old, at the oldest. She was probably a priestess, a storyteller. She was from a horseriding culture, and it’s unclear if stirrups had been invented at the time. She suffered from chronic pain, and she died from breast cancer and/or complications from a fall (probably from horseback). This is the first time I’ve seen her boots, but I’m entirely unsurprised by it. She may not have had to walk much, given her status and riding culture. She may not have been ABLE to walk much, given her apparent disabilities. She was valued in her community, despite these limitations, to the point that they created these beautiful, less-than-functional objects for her, that they buried her with ceremony befitting royalty, that she and her belongings are the best and most solid example of this culture we have. Disabled people have inherent worth in a society, and always have.
