Snape and the misogynistic male audience projection
There’s a point where I just question wether the whole Snape incel thing was spread by straight up misogyny.
Because Snape is the one character in the books whose motivation surrounds a woman. Which to the general audience (which is still influenced by deeply mysoginistic views of women) would seem like something incredibly unreasonable. Unthinkable even.
Imagine- a MAN 😨 grieving over his FEMALE 😨😨 FRIEND 😨😨😨
The core male audience would never be nice to a woman they cannot find attractive or wouldn’t shag, let alone see her as a human being they would dedicate their life to so they project those views onto Snape. Fabricating ulterior, despicable motives for him because they cannot comprehend even being actual friends with a woman.
They say he only cared about Lily because he wants to shag her… Even at the point where she is literally DEAD so there is literally nothing Snape could even get from her. Not to mention as soon as she told him to fuck off, he went ahead, apologized and never spoke to her again. So basically respected her wishes to not talk to him and moved on about his own life. (Also there is ZERO points in the book where he ever expresses sexual or romantic feelings for her. The only scene in the books which could be read as romantic is the patronus ‘always’ scene which is still arguable)
Even Voldemort expressed those views at the very end, which Harry calls him out on. So these men literally think like Voldemort.
Obviously antis spread that mysoginistic interpretation because their hate for the character blinds their judgement but isn’t that just so pathetic? Immediately assuming that a male character wants something sexual from a female (dead) friend just because they care about them too much? Because a man obviously would NEVER respect a female unless he finds her fuckable? Do women not get tired of spreading that narrative themselves?
Same thing with the Narcissa scene where she sobs on Snape and begs him to help her son is sexualized by the audience. A mother begging a man to help her because her son is gonna be pulled into a terrorist cult is SEXUALIZED. The scene where Snape literally tries to PUSH HER AWAY and sit her down.
Do people not get tired of women being sexualized? Sexualized when they are DEAD? Sexualized when they are BEGGING FOR HELP? And it all being unfairly projected by despicable men onto Snape (who’s canon book version would literally more likely be an aggressive misandrist)
Had Lily been a man Snape deeply respected and grieved over no one would question it. Even find it deeply touching. (Unrelated fandom but think Naruto and Sasuke) But because Lily is a woman, she obviously has no other respectable qualities other than her sexuality and attractiveness.
There's this one thing about the whole argument of "Severus Snape isn't redeemed just because he wants to fuck Harry's mom" that grinds my gears. Like that's implying Snape left his memories for Harry because he wanted to be redeemable in the eyes of those who survive. Snape doesn't give a shit if people think he's a good person or not. He spent 7 whole books proving he gives 0 fucks about his reputation by being an asshole (and I love him for it, honestly).
There's a whole myriad of other reasons why Snape gave Harry his childhood memories, first and foremost probably being because Harry's a little dumb but he's not that dumb and if a Death Eater, one of Voldemort's closest followers, the murderer of Albus Dumbledore himself wrote Harry a note saying "kill urself lmao trust me it's the only way to get rid Voldie" do you think Harry would go "capital idea, let me throw myself off the Astronomy Tower just like you punted Dumbledore off it" No. One single memory of Dumbledore saying "I raised Harry as a pig for slaughter" isn't going to make Harry do shit; he needs to know that Snape was and still is working for the Light side by showing him why he's doing all of this.
And, also, I like to think that this is Snape's weird way of trying to comfort Harry, by showing him he's not alone, that Snape understands his feelings of being trapped, of being powerless, stripped of choices, of surviving a terrible childhood and instead of getting a reward, of building that found family, he's instead sentenced to die and it's not fair.
I pay attention to things most people ignore (how people treat Severus vs Regulus even though they’re the same character)
Snape was not a victim any more than James was; they were equally shitty to each other.
(Mods, please reupload this, I wish to remain anonymous)
…Dude. “It’s more the fact that he exists.” Fighting back does not make something equal. If someone comes up and punches me in the face you can bet your ass I’m going to hit them back. That doesn’t mean it was balanced. It sure as hell doesn’t mean it’s balanced if I fight back against four people. (Or even two if we’re assuming Peter and Remus never joined in.)
And really, would my fellow Americans please learn some basic British terminology if they’re going to comment on books set in Britain? Or at least understand context? Pants in this case refers to underwear. The book flat out says that when Snape’s robes fell over his head his underpants were shown. How exactly would that be possible if he was wearing trousers?
James was a bully. There is never an excuse for physically assaulting someone else for the fun of it. “The bully in the Marauders was Sirius” - um, it’s not like there’s a Mandated One-Per-Clique Bully Limit.
Also, there is no excuse for bullying. There is never an excuse for bullying. And that’s what it was - because 4-on-1 isn’t anything except that.
Snape hung out with “future Death Eaters,” yes - the keyword there being future. As for the “love of his life” - this is also in the future, and James was bullying Snape long before he was interested in Lily. Lily had nothing to do with James’s motivations when it came to bullying Snape - James wasn’t bullying him because he somehow magically knew Snape would become a Death Eater or because Snape had insulted Lily. As Ndelphinus points out, “It’s more the fact he exists” is James’s rationale - because he can, because he doesn’t like Snape. (In fact, James was bullying Snape while Lily and Snape were still friends; we don’t know about hexing/jinxing, but the verbal exchange started on the train on the way to Hogwarts, as soon as Snape mentions Slytherin as a desirable thing, and their physical altercations start with James trying to trip Snape when he and Lily go to find another compartment - all because Snape has expressed a desire for Slytherin and insulted Gryffindor.)
Snape is not a nice guy; Snape was a racist even when he was at school, and hung out with people who performed Dark Magic; he invented at least one Dark spell himself - but none of that is an excuse to constantly physically assault, verbally harass, and otherwise bully him.
Take a look at OotP: Sirius and James make the first move. James has a look of “avid anticipation” on his face when they see Snape; they’re the ones to approach. Snape expects an attack; this has happened before, and he reacts in defense. (Per JKR, the Pensieve is objective; this is not fallible or biased because the memory is Snape’s.) James Disarms Snape, then trips him, then gangs up on him with Sirius - turning him upside-down, scrubbing his mouth out with soap (despite comic portrayals in media, this is actually a very nasty punishment and can result in serious illness/vomiting), and is about to strip Snape of his underwear when the memory ends. Yes, Snape chooses Sectumsempra for self-defense - but he is trying to defend himself, even though he really has no chance.
How is this “banter”? How is this not bullying? If this was real life and you were Snape’s parent, would you say that’s a fair rivalry?
Woobifying James does not help your cause. Liking a character means acknowledging everything they’ve done, both good and bad. Snape may not be a pleasant person - but not liking someone doesn’t excuse being a bully.
