He can't/wouldn't take a NO for an answer. He couldn't face the fact he liked her and she didn't reciprocate.
He couldn't face rejection upon his bare face.
They literally talked about how they meant so much for each other. How she actually likes him as someone she can rely on. This should have made him realize how much she actually meant to him because if she could love him as a friend (but not romantically) this meant he too could love her as a friend, as a sister.
But no. Men need to possess women. Men need a wife. Men need someone who has a sincere and emotionally reliable relationship and makes it about meaning the person is perfect as a romantic partner.
He actually calls her Freaky Nikki, upsetting her, knowing that hurts her. And when she wanted to put an end on his stupid selfish action, questioning his feelings for her, he knew he fucked it up BAD and would be rejected right there. He acted stupid, he wasn't truthful to her, he didn't want to be responsible for his feelings and didn't want to face the facts.
So he destroyed her life by not believing magic and sacred energy. Something that, supriiise, Nikki did believe.
Uau, how could he think that she wouldn't reject him right when he doesn't agree with essential things, like religion/magic, nor was actually there for her when she talked about leaving her job to pursue the writing career??
Actually, he probably did. But he didn't want to face the facts and ignore everything to let his dreamy image of Nikki live rent-free... And for him neither the "Nikki" was someone he loved.
