Alone at the edge of a universe, humming a tune.
Aka Eldritch star eater Grace! Enjoy this little fic!
Simon was alone in space, chasing something that might not exist. He’s sure it doesn’t exist but something is eating the stars and slowly devouring the sun like it was a delicious meal that needed to be savoured. Simon couldn’t blame it really. A delicious meal sounds amazing right now but not at the cost of his home planet and everyone around him.
He knows this is a one way trip. He’s been told this from the beginning. Some astronomer swore they saw something blocking out the stars but they all laughed in his face and called him mad. That was until they saw it for themselves. Then they believed it. So that’s why he’s now on this ship, floating in an endless black void with the ghosts of stars.
He should accept his fate. Accept that he won’t get the chance to live like he wants to. Write his own story. Guess he’s the only one who wants that really. All he remembers is him falling asleep at his desk in his office, trying to come up with a solution. Anything to stop him being the one who was sent up there to die only to wake up to robots above him and him on a space ship.
Simon doesn’t want to think about the room he destroyed out of anger. That room doesn’t exist to him. The astrophage in the fuel tanks have been going strong but Simon makes it slow down so he can have time to think. He doesn’t even know where he’s going. Simon decides to eat something before getting back to trying to figure out everything.
Simon must’ve fallen asleep after eating. He hadn’t know how tired he was before this but something felt off. It feels like his ship wasn’t moving. It didn’t run out of astrophage, right? That’s what he needs to get to where he’s going.
He asks “hey Mary? Are we moving?”
To which the robotic voice tells him that they appear to have stalled. Helpful. Just great. He walks to the cockpit but stops at the window where he would watch the ghost of stars and the endless void go by but he jumps almost out of his skin at seeing a massive eyeball staring into the ship.
“Holy fucking shit!” Simon screams. The eye blinks at him and moves away. Maybe he was more tired than he thought. Hes not dreaming, is he? He hears a light tap coming from the side of the ship. Are they- are they trying to get him to come out of the ship? Fuck that. Yes got a mission to solve and then he can try and at least try and make it back to earth so he can live his life in peace.
He hears the tap again. Fuck he’s going to have to do a space walk go figure out what the fuck was that.
“This is crazy. What if whatever is out there wants to kill me?” He mumbled as he puts his spacesuit on to go on a space walk. This will be his first space walk ever so he’s hoping that nothing will go wrong.
He steps out and sees a massive hand holding his ship like it’s precious to it. That’s really strange. He climbs to the top of the ship and sees the other hand holding it to as if it’s cupping a newborn chick.
Simon finally looks up and his eyes widen at the God like creature in front of him. Multiple eyes staring down at him, its pupils looking like the planets that have been eaten and destroyed. Its hair is golden like the sun and it brings Simon back to a time whereas a kid, he would spend his summers lying in the sun like a happy plant that’s just photosynthesising.
Simon has no words to describe the god creature other than a biblically accurate angel with its multiple eyes. Simon can hear it making music as it talks to him in a soft tone no one has used with him since his mother passed.
“Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you. You’re- you’re a long way from home.”
Simon in shock still, breathlessly says “I-I was sent here to discover why the planets and stars are dying. My planet- my home is slowly dying and they sent me.”
“S-Simon….. Am I….dreaming or are you real?”
The god- Grace giggles at him and Simon feels so small in its presence. Grace gently uses a finger to put under Simon’s chin and he holds his breath. “You’re so precious and tiny, Simon. You’re not dreaming. This is real.”
Simon can’t believe it. Grace, this giant man with multiple eyes is staring down at him. Holding onto him like Simon is a prized treasure of his to keep safe. Surely this isn’t the thing that’s eating the stars and planets…..right?
