A female Southern hawker/Aeshna cyanea/blågrön mosaikslända laying her eggs at the edge of our garden pond. She inserts each egg into soft, decaying plant material, where it will remain until hatching next spring. The aquatic larvae then spend two to three years beneath the surface as formidable predators before finally emerging as the magnificent dragonflies we see in summer. While the females often go unnoticed as they lay their eggs, the males are much more conspicuous, tirelessly patrolling the pond and chasing away rivals. Värmland, Sweden (28 July 2019).
