About This Blog
The purpose of this blog is pretty simple: I want a database to be able to more easily search through MtG art without having to search by card information. Now, my fellow MtG players who have stumbled upon this blog may be wondering why, and that has to do with my other special interest: Dungeons and Dragons. Or, I suppose at this point any table top RPG. You see, I love creating my own world and sharing it with players, and as part of that I've really taken to having art at the ready for any number of interesting things my players will encounter, from landscapes to NPCs to flora and fauna. Unfortunately, in the new modern age of AI, it's become harder and harder to find anything by real artists that suits my needs. However, one extremely bountiful source that myself and some of my DnD friends have discovered has been art from MtG.
As I've been working on campaign prep, I did some googling and was disappointed to find that the databases of MtG art that exist aren't exactly designed with casual art seekers to find: they're more focused on the card or at best the artist than they are on the subject. Scryfall has some user generated tagging options, but I was pretty unimpressed, and it wasn't particularly convenient since Scryfall is a card database at the end of the day, meaning it's up to the user to either leave the site and look for the card art they liked without the actual card part of it, or to take the card image and crop it down.
Now I'm not exactly a web developer, so I figured the easiest way to create the database I want is to go back to my roots: making a tumblr blog. Besides, I think I've got all the functionality I could want and more here: I can post individual art, provide credit to the card and artist, add all the tags I could possibly need, and even get feedback from the community on tags they want to see! Even if I'm the only one that ever uses this, I'll consider this project a success.
For those interested, I plan to source the art on this blog from MTGNexus first, since they have a ready stock of card art with the artists attached. If end up seeking out more, I may update this post later for future credits.
