Bobby’s voice seeped through the darkness like a star on a foggy night. There were many of us singing around the fire, but there was one voice I couldn’t get enough of - his. Everything about it was real - the pain, the doubt, the thirst for truth. You could hear it in the way his vocal chords quivered under the flow of a breath that had seen it all. We met him at the Lithuanian

#EuropeanRainbowGathering in the summer of 2015. He told me his story. Its one I’d love to share with you, but unfortunately its not mine to tell. I can only say its as deep, colorful and honest as his no-bullshit voice.

We met up in my studio, and after jamming a little bit he graced me with “squeeze enough”. No one except my wife understood why I became bent on recording it, why that was the only song I wanted to focus on for the rest afternoon.

This is art that’s not meant for selling, and certainly one of the most meaningful tracks I’ve had the privilege of being a part of during the past year.

The Peace Community of San José de Apartadó was created in March 1997, when people living in villages in the municipality of Apartadó, north-western Colombia, pledged not to be drawn into the conflict which for more than 40 years has pitted the security forces and paramilitaries against guerilla groups.

The civilian population undertook:

Not to participate in the war in any direct or indirect form;

Not to carry arms;

Not to manipulate or give information to any of the parties involved in armed conflict;

Not to ask any of the parties to solve conflicts.

To seek a peaceful solution and to engage in dialogue as a way to solve the conflict in the country.

Their stance has met with suspicion and hostility from the army, its paramilitary allies and the guerrillas. Since 1997, more than 170 members of the Peace Community have been killed or subjected to enforced disappearance.

On September 21, 2015, Ernesto Guzmán, a peasant farmer associated with the Peace Community, was shot and attacked with a machete by paramilitaries.

Call on the Colombian government to bring those responsible to justice and protect the Peace Community!
