I absolutely love the fact that along with the new Moominvalley animation the Moomins and Tove Jansson are getting a new wave of hype and admiration online, but I wish that more people knew that while Tove was adorable and her works of literature are full of joy and happiness and kindness, she was also bad ass!!! She openly impeached pretty much everything that was considered proper behaviour at the time; she dated several men without marrying them when such was considered highly indecent, was one of the few Finnish artists ballsy enough to publicly criticize Hitler when Germany and Finland were allies in WW II, wrote several novels and short stories about same sex couples (though the romance was always kinda hid in plain view) when homosexuality was illegal or classified a mental disorder, and in 1992 she and her partner Tuulikki PietilĂ€ were the first same sex couple to attend the presidentâs independence day party, an incident after which several public figures accused Tove of âOpenly desecrating the presidentâ. I like to imagine that Tove had a big old laugh after hearing that one. So yes, she was a beautiful soul whose artwork fills our world with wonder, but do not forget for a second that she was also what we in Finnish like to call a âvitun kova muijaâ! Iâm basing my comments on multiple academic sources and books on Toveâs life which address her work and smaller details like character names. I would say it comes naturally that for someone with Tove Janssonâs personality and background, love between women would also include sexual intercourse between women as well. But it would be a disservice to say that mymla simply translated to sex and that is not how people who have investigated her letters or talked with her social circle have taken it.

but it doesnât hold up as a social identity and that becomes extremely obvious whenever you hold it up to literally any other social identity. race, gender, class, ability, religion, sexuality, all of these are coherent identities that come with shared social, cultural, and political experiences. all of these are also things that children can be. all of them (except for race) can change over time of course, but children are still these things.
children canât be asexual. point blank. to say there are asexual children is to say there are non-asexual children which is by definition sexualizing children, and extremely vile. this is also why ace =/= lgbt, bc children can be lgbt but they canât be asexual.
