Only a third of Americans ages 18 to 29 say they will cast a ballot next month. Here, we ask why.
Wow.
These kids are not all right.
I really feel like the generation younger than these people are going to be different.
These people are all selfish fucking morons.
âI donât own stamps or a printer.âÂ
âMailing things gives me anxiety.âÂ
I couldnât make it past the 2nd one.
Ok though, if you actually listen to what these people are saying? It sounds like they have citizenship imposter syndrome. Our society has delayed the possibility of adulthood qua adulthood as their parents enjoyed it - and turned it into something imaginary and far off. Having the same address for more than a year feels like a dream - because itâs unlikely that any 20-something can afford a house and is very likely that they will need to move for a job if it comes up. And our entire voting system was set up for their parentsâ and grandparentsâ lives, not theirs. Our country tries to disenfranchise black people but it also tries to disenfranchise poor people, and young people are way more likely to be poor.
You can grocery shop and apply for jobs and sign contracts on your phone now. And as a former poll worker, I will tell you that the only group of people who have the privilege of being able to come to the polls with any consistency are retired (exception: graduate student housing). Working people mostly have to be able to do early or absentee voting because our work-obsessed culture is set up to make participation very difficult for working people. And if you change addresses, you have to be obsessed with voting to be sure you get a mail-in ballot. I filled out several voter registration forms and still got unenrolled during my most recent move. Cox Communications is better at finding me.
A couple of these kids are afraid of the consequences of choosing incorrectly, and itâs little wonder. Politics has made their economy really bad.
And as someone who has been on the ground seeing political sausage made, I will tell you: theyâre not wrong that politics are gross. It takes a strong stomach and an understanding that âmarginally and incrementally betterâ is how our system works to make this bearable. Maybe you donât get that understanding if you havenât seen the âmarginally and incrementally betterâ part working. If you didnât live through the Voting Rights Act if 1965 or werenât 26 or with a preexisting condition when the Affordable Care Act passed, maybe you havenât had the direct experience with the flawed but positive impact laws can have. Right now, government is hell bent on doing what is best for the rich white OLD elites. Have you ever wondered why age discrimination laws protect people over 40 but not young people? Who do you think passed those laws?
Also, these are the same kids who are told that if they donât get 4.0s in high school they canât get in to college and will never get a job, and any misstep on social media or with the law will follow you forever (unless you are white and privileged and then you can assault your college classmates with impunity apparently). In a bad economy, of *course* the most vulnerable workers are feeling anxious and disempowered.
tl;dr if we actually wanted young people to vote, we would act really differently as a society, but we donât.
The reaching here is hilarious. Somehow pressure to get a 4.0 translates to not voting? Ok then. Go off, I guess.
To quote a wise friend âLike whatever. Donât vote. But at least own it and donât turn it into yet another bullshit âthese made up generations are actually prisons weâre all trapped in and itâs all old peopleâs fault anywayâ argument.â
L O FUCKING L
âYoung people donât vote because they donât own their own houses like all their rich parentsâ? Really? Thatâs the take youâre going with? Most third class people (which is the majority of Americans) donât own their own homes. Iâve never owned a home and neither has my mother and we still vote- hell, I voted this morning.
Teresa in season two: comes back to work with Camila as a partner but isnât treated as one despite often being responsible for the cartelâs survival, tries to do things ethically, develops a relationship with James, Guero comes back and everything goes to hell, finds out from Kelly Anne that sheâs being set up, everything goes to hell again, ultimately decides she canât run from her enemies.
James in season three: comes back to work with Teresa as a partner but isnât one despite often being responsible for the cartelâs survival, tries to do things ethically, develops a relationship with Teresa, Guero comes back and everything goes to hell, finds out that heâs being set up by Kelly Anne, everything goes to hell again, ultimately decides he canât run from his enemies.
Turning the reassuring line for children into a meme for adults should make everyone uncomfortable.
Read this.
I was just talking about this yesterday. I love Mr. Rogers, but I donât know if I can stand to hear this line being used by adults for adults about yet another act of inevitable, preventable domestic terrorism.
This is very smart and thoughtful.

...youâre hoping they hook a lesbian up with a guy?
can u imagine being admitted to the hospital in house cos ur half-dead from the worlds most obscure disease and youre lying in bed dying and you cant even do that in peace cos every five minutes houseâs little club comes back in to do another round of random tests while gossiping about their deep psychological issues and if thats not painful enough one of them is australian and you have to listen to that. and just when u think u can finally slip away gracefully some old dude comes in and switches off your life support and yells at you for not telling him you tripped on a loose floorboard and broke a nail when you were seven like just let me go bro. im done

How do you think Kelly Ann knew about Jeresas relationship? and since when? In 3x11 she said âI know you have feelings for himâ and she asked Teresa if she looked so sad because sth between her and James happened âwomanâs intuitionâ. And what do you think, did everyone in their crew know about them like Charger, Javier, Camila, Devon at the end?
Hey, anon! I think it was probably a combination of observation (especially since she wouldâve been snooping around to plant the bugs) and being informed by Devon so she could use the information. Because of the bugs Finch would have found out about Jeresa pretty quickly, if he hadnât already assumed they were involved after 3x05.
I donât know if Camila actually knew about them prior to taking Teresa captive so much as she was just making a logical assumption that Teresaâs reaction confirmed. Javier guessed the same way Camila had, knowing James well enough to suss out his motivations and then just observing reactions.
So basically everyone actively observing them, looking for information, realized they were involved. I doubt the rest of her crew, like Charger or Lil T, knew anything. Probably still donât, lol.
happy halloween!
Whatâs your favorite season of Queen of the south so far? I think mine is season 1. I feel like season 1 was more character driven.
Hey, anon! I liked season one, too, a lot more than many fans. I think it had fewer issues with logic and continuity than the subsequent seasons. It wasnât without its flaws, of course. Overall, Iâd say season two is still my favorite - even though thatâs when the show started to develop some major problems - and not just because of Jeresa. Tho obviously, lmao, Jeresa is the primary reason why. Just watching their relationship deepen even though Teresaâs trying to bury her feelings, all the times they saved each other, watching them be so in sync as partners, etc. I feel like if I were to do a highlights reel for them the bulk of the moments would come from season two.Â
But I also like that season best because Teresa finally felt like the lead character, which she hadnât in season one. She was finally the one driving the action and not stuck just reacting to others and thatâs very important to me.
Favorite Horror Films: Youâre Next (2011, Adam Wingard) âThis wasnât a random attack! Our familyâs being targeted.â
I love how at the end of season two, Teresa wanted James to run with her and start a cartel. She wanted to build an empire with him. Regardless of whether or not Guero was there (and what would his role have been, hhmm?).Â
And when James started tracking Teresa down after he left Devon Finchâs cartel, he had every reason to think - after what happened in the s2 finale - that Guero would be there.
These two idiots.

Hi, so I was wondering could you please explain Devons character? I get so confused how he goes from being a buyer in season 2 to now in the CIA? Also could you explain in depth exactly why James put himself in the CIAs custody. Finally, what do you think would have happened to Teresa if James hadn't gone.
Hey, anon! Iâll try to get as in-depth as possible but we donât have a ton of information about this right now.Â
Devon Finch, according to King George, exploded onto the drug scene, becoming known for his intellect and âelegant violence.â His sister, The Professor, works as his enforcer and their family comes from Haiti. Devon is either a confidential informant/asset for the C.I.A - so he was a drug trafficker turned by the agency - or heâs an undercover agent. His role within the agency hasnât been clarified yet.
James put himself into C.I.A. custody to protect Teresa. Finch and the agency were targeting Teresa and her cartel for two reasons: because of her connection to El Santo and because of James (due to what happened in Texas). El Santo is now believed to be dead and Teresa no longer has access to his superior product so she isnât considered a threat right now. Which leaves James. Finch wanted to âclean up the messâ James made in Texas. What that means, exactly, we donât know. Having to go back to work for Finch or getting locked up in a cell somewhere are the two most likely options. Finch contacted him at some point, we donât know what was said, but they agreed to meet. James believes you canât outrun the C.I.A., that they would continue to target him and Teresa by association. Wanting to spare her that - James has always been clear that heâs unwilling to allow Teresa to suffer the consequences of his actions - he surrendered.Â
Had James not done so? I canât imagine him staying with Teresa and not telling her about Devon so my guess is she would try to outmaneuver them and prepare to fight back the next time there was an attack. It would be a bloodbath, probably. The C.I.A. has more money, more soldiers/agents/etc., more guns, and greater reach. They ordered a missile strike on El Santo. Thatâs not a fight Teresa would be able to win, not in the long run. Either Teresa wouldâve been killed or arrested, alongside everyone who works for her.
We succeed, we're free to run Phoenix how we want. We'll be the only game in town, and we'll do it together.                            I hope so.
