I did not finish reading the whole thing yet, I'm still on book 4, but to quote a friend that I do agree with:

"Definitely the last one, as someone whos read it twice, definetly the last one."

I need to be honest, I did not read any of priest's other works yet (I do intend to after Tai Sui because she's a genius), but Tai Sui has broken me fundamentally on a lot of levels. And it's the small details: food you always saw as a novelty being called scraps by people who own more, wobbly "beheaded" letters written on the pavement, different accents slipping through after living anywhere but home, meetings, farewells, the little changes in behaviour and speech patters as years pass, the angstiest thing you read being followed up by comedic relief that dumbfounds you.

I really love and live for the world-building priest created here and I find it extremly beautiful. I could name you so many scenes I enjoyed and little character iteractions that I don't think I would've paid attention to in another setting. Most of the characgers in tai sui tend to be rounded characters, unlike what you see in some of the more popular series. They have ideals, beliefs, regrets, make mistakes; each of them sees their world with their own eyes, they have priorities. Like people in real life do, they feel so real and that adds to the angst and the bittersweetness of the novel.
