Sweat caused wisps of hair to cling to the frame of her face, her cheeks flushed from running back and forth across the soccer field. Practice had been going well for her; she wasn't one of the ones who needed to work on her defense. Blame it on being a natural, but Juniper didn't think it was that hard. She'd spotted Floyd out of the corner of her eye hanging out around the bleachers some time ago, but it wasn't until their coach called for a ten-minute break that she tore herself away from her team and headed his way. ❝ Are you gonna give me a sip, or do boys still believe in cooties at this age? ❞ She enjoyed teasing him, and while she already had her own bottle sitting on another set of bleachers somewhere, she also enjoyed messing with him.

Juniper was sure that her hand wasn't broken, but dammit if it didn't hurt like hell. She could barely move her fingers, leaving them in a curled-up state, much like they had been when she was throwing blow after blow until she felt something. But even then, was that feeling enough? Was it enough to satiate that hollow feeling inside her? She used to get a kick out of picking fights so that she could get the satisfaction of ending them on her own terms.

It had been that way for as far as she could remember. Definitely high school, never letting anyone put her down in that dog-eat-dog teenage society. She didn't intend for it to happen now, when being an adult was the hardest thing you could be. Throw in the fact that she was the daughter of a criminal and associated with one of Charming's biker clubs? Yeah, her skin had thickened a long time ago, and she lived and breathed adrenaline rushes. It didn't always have to be fights exactly, but that's how tonight had ended up. Now she couldn't open her hand without making a guttural noise. The scrapes on her knuckles stung, but she didn't seem to care about that or the blood on her shirt that wasn't her own. Hopefully Tara didn't care enough to ask questions, doctor or not.

That comment struck a nerve, whether Khan intended it to or not. She never wanted to face the reason why she acted tougher than she should have in most situations. She was always ready to start and end a fight when someone tried to take advantage of her, or constantly prove that she was better than however they perceived her to be initially. In this galaxy, especially where she was from, thick skin was important. Juniper just made sure she had the thickest, enough to hide how sensitive and tender she could be.

But at the root of it all, maybe she was yearning for approval where she didn't always need to find it. She could still be tough and able to hold her own while accepting herself and her limits. She didn't need to get into a brawl at a cantina or run her mouth to someone trying to cheat her out of abundant credits. She was enough. Khan could see that.

Juniper didn't know how Gemma wanted her to respond to a statement like that. She had been brought up with the golden rule of never getting involved in something that would bring the cops knocking at her door. Granted, those rules were a little loose considering her lifestyle and the footsteps she followed in, but as long as she never caught the eye of the law, she figured she was good. Gemma, on the other hand, had landed herself behind bars once or twice since Juniper had signed on as their mechanic. She never even seemed bothered by it, as far as she could tell.
