My muse has finally returned after having been missing for weeks. Now they're all over the news as the latest 'kidnapping survivor'. Your muse finally gets a moment alone with mine. What do they say?
It was only the barest bones of propriety that the very same man had taught him... 30 years ago now, that kept Captain Christopher Pike from bounding out the door and into his old RA's arms.
âGabe!â He called out, then, âCaptain Lorca!â
Chris settled, instead of leaping on Lorca like he wouldâve in his days as a little tree branch of a kid, for a warm hug before the man could object.
âItâs so good to see you.â The war has taken its toll on Gabe, on Chris, on everyone, but when itâs him and his âbig brother,â it really does feel like olden days for once. âBeen ages, right? So sorry you couldnât make it to my advancement, we had a party. Leland couldnât make it either, though, so it was a little more on the subdued side. Or weâre all just getting old.â
Itâs been over a year since Chris got promoted to captain, but it still feels like such a short time. The years are getting shorter, and not just because Lelandâs been incommunicado for so long, but the rest of their old squad too.

âOh, well sheâs a beauty, you know,â he tells his friend.
Age and competence are certainly not a one-to-one correlation, and the Enterprise has its fair share of prodigies, but he does feel less out-of-the-loop onboard. Maybe thatâs because of the distance of their five-year mission, or maybe they just humor him because heâs a captain.
âBest in the fleet, but the name is a lot to live up to.â
(One thing does confuse him a little, though itâs easily attributable to Gabeâs trauma. The Enterprise is well over a decade old at this point, and the name even older. Itâs not a new ship by any stretch of the imagination)
Gabe nodded, trying to remember the Defiant files. Those had been captured by the captain of a different Enterprise a century ago. Sato, maybe? If Gabe was being honest with himself, he didnât care much for history. Aside from the conquests of the Empire that had been drilled into him in grade school, he couldnât remember much.
âIf I ever get another ship, Iâll give you a run for your money on being the best in the fleet.â He paused, taking a moment to rub tension out of his neck.
âYou know Iâm proud of you, right?â The words sounded strange as he said them. Sentiment was something he rarely expressed, but sentimental seemed the best descriptor of the relationship the other him has with this Pike.

âOh yeah. Thatâs me-â Heâs muttering as he leads them both out of the transporter hub and towards a lounge he knows. Itâs not hip by any means, and they both know that.
âHip.â With that, he looks back up and laughs. Itâs the sort of comfortable familiarity where one can laugh with confidence, not knowing if the other will too, but not caring either. Heâs missed it, out on his lonesome in space.
âGod, I feel old.â
Gabe softly chuckled, then nodded. That was something he could relate to. Even though he got away alive, his escape from his counterpartâs increasingly nosy crew had been rough. His âeye injuriesâ were a feint, but the broken ribs and soft tissue injuries still made him sore. He let himself move a little slower, since injuries seemed to be accepted, almost respected, in this universe, rather than seen as a weakness.
âYou and me both, Chris. Although you being on that new ship probably doesnât help. Whatâs she like, the Enterprise? And what itâs like being that far out? The Bur-â he let himself falter, playing into his act. âI havenât been that deep in space for at least a decade.â
â do you forgive yourself? âÂ
                             no. next question.Â
jump-one-three-threeâ:
âThirty-One?â Gabe pondered. He hadnât heard of them before. He knew just about everything that happened in the Empire, so it must be specific to thus universe.
âIâm sorry Leland is couldnât come, Chris.â Pike seemed upset. If anything, Gabe could try and get him to talk under the guise of comfort and camraderie. âAssignments can be hellishly long.â He awkwardly clapped Pike on the shoulder.
âI know Iâm a little late, but how about a buy you a drink to celebrate your promotion?â Gabe could use a drink. Not to mention the chance of getting Pike to open up more. Gabe needed all the information about this universe he could get.
âA drink, yeah.â The tap on the shoulder and the invitation are enough to snap Chris out of whatever maudlin train of thought he was likely about to go on, but not enough to catch on to anything strange about what Gabe has just said.
âLetâs go do that. Iâm done for the day if you are.â
"I am more than done. It's been a long one." Gabe smiled at Chris. "How about you pick a bar? I'm sure you know all the hip places." He pointedly glanced at Chris' graying hair. He couldn't help but be curious. Dye? Probably, unless he's somehow more stressed in this universe. Which is unlikely.
jump-one-three-threeâ:
Gabe was surprised to see Pike on Earth. Pike, who in his universe was always on the outskirts of the empire conquering new territory and expanding it. Pike, the Empireâs perfect little captain was hugging him.
Gabe took a deep breath. This wasnât his universe. This Pike was different. More bubbly and sweet, just like champagne he had gifted Michael when she became captain. âItâs good to see you too, Captain Pike. Congratulations on the promotion.â Gabe tightly squeezed Chris before letting go, eager to get away from such a vulnerable position.
âLeland wasnât there for your party? I thought you kept him on a short leash,â Gabe coughed to try and disguise his out of place comment. âSo to speak. You two were inseparable.â He could only hope that was as true in this universe as it was in his.
âNo, heâs still away.â He tucks his hands in his pockets and sways around, the sort of nervous demeanor of touching on a sensitive subject. Besides, with Gabeâs formality, heâs probably hoping for a little more distance too. But he can still keep up the casual conversation.
âI wish we could be inseparable as the old days, but you know how assignments are. Thirty-One doesnât really give a damn about important personal milestones, soâŚ.â He shrugs with resignation.
"Thirty-One?" Gabe pondered. He hadn't heard of them before. He knew just about everything that happened in the Empire, so it must be specific to thus universe.

ask for your gabe: what kind of humiliation?
Prime Gabe:Â âI just like being on my knees. And taking care of whoever Iâm with. And verbal humiliation is always fun.âMirror Gabe:Â âAll of it. What can I say, Iâm a slut.â
gentiles on this website: âThe Old Testament God is cruel and vengeful!â actual Jews in my synagogue yesterday: âMy favorite part of the reading is when it says the Torah is not in heaven so itâs too far to reach, itâs not across the sea so we canât get it, but that itâs in our hearts⌠the idea of having that be so close, of being so close to something divine, that thrills me.â âAnd here, where it says âthe Lord will delight in you as he did in your fathersâ, thatâs such a beautiful thing. You know, God is this all-powering being, and God delights in us.â
gentiles on this website:Â âYou canât be an atheist and religious!â actual Jews in my synagogue yesterday:Â âIâm just not buying any of this. I was born during the Holocaust and I could never wrap my mind around this omnipotent all-seeing God, and usually Iâm a little moved by this, I try to be hopeful, but when I look around the world now, I just donât buy it! If I really believed there was a God, I would resent him.â [still wears a prayer shawl and attends synagogue regularly]
gentiles on this website:Â âReligious people never question what theyâre told, they just followed blindly!â my actual rabbi:Â âSometimes the Torah can be like an older relative whom we love dearly, and who has a lot of wisdom to give, but who also says things that cause us pain, that we find offensive or wrong. And I think the wrong instinct would be to pretend we donât hear what theyâre saying, or to cut them out entirely, or to be guided by them into thinking and behaving in offensive ways. What we need to do is engage the Torah. We need to wrestle with it, and try to understand it, to figure out where itâs coming from and learn how we can progress from it, because the Torah is not unchanging. It belongs in each of our hearts, and it changes for us as we study it, as each generation challenges its old assumptions.â

âNo. But the you from my universe mattered to me.â

Gabriel huffed and shook his head. âI didnât kill her. I canât prove who sent the assassin that did, but I think it was Georgiou.â He spat the womanâs name like a curse. He had failed to protect Michael from her. Strong, bold Michael who would have been a better Emperor than Georgiou could ever hope to be.

The way she lingers could be called unprofessional, if Vera had any particularly professional relationship with Gabe, most of the time.Â
âAlmost finished? I can wait, if you want dinner.â
Gabe set down his padd. âHonestly, I think Iâve done enough reports today. I can do more tomorrow. And dinner sounds great. Iâm hungry.â He had worked through lunch, so food would be wonderful.
