A list of cliche things Iâve learned from writing the first draft of my novel:
- Donât expect perfection. I spent about six months writing and rewriting the first chapter so I could make it âperfect.â Eventually, I moved on. The first chapter didnât even matter, because now I have to rewrite it. I learned more from finishing the book than wasting time on trying to perfect the hook sentence.
- The novel will go through changes, even as you write. So, I expected my story to be about people getting lost in the woods under mysterious circumstances. I had a better idea halfway through. It was more dynamic and it impacted my characters on a deeper level. So, what I thought was going to be the plot of my novel, became just a plot thread. Itâs okay, be loose. Youâre probably going to rewrite the whole thing anyway.
-Â Dedication is key, but donât burn yourself out. I wrote every day, with the goal of writing 500 words a day on average over a month. Rather than setting a daily goal, I chose to average out my goal, just in case life got in the way. I found it super helpful considering I was working and going through school.
- Love thy characters. Youâre going to be spending a lot of time with them. Make them interesting, make them flawed, make them real. Love them⌠But love their pain more.
- Finishing may not feel so great. I spent months with these characters. I helped them along their journey, and writing gave me a sense of purpose. It was something I looked forward to every day, the only thing I could think about. One day, it was over. I didnât know what to do with myself. But there is a silver liningâŚ
- Itâs not over. Writing is rewriting. I finally got to read my novel, after letting it sit for a few weeks. Itâs terrible and I love it. All I could think about is rewriting it. Today is the day.Â
Good luck on your writing journey.

i got a sunburn right across my cheeks today after sitting outside and now I look like theo every time he catches sag smiling
i love characters who could get the absolute Shit kicked out of them and still be fine but as soon as someone touches/handles them gently itâs like âah. im going to shatter to pieces now thanksâ
went for a getaway drive to jasper and back yesterday. the mountains always know just how to cheer me up
Iâve been away for a while. In the last two months I got temp laid off from my job, and animal crossing came out. Those are the two Big Things that happened. Also I moved, but it was only two doors down.
Celestial has been in the back of my mind, as always. I have, realistically, another month off from work. Now that weâre unpacked and relatively comfy, itâll be time to start writing the second draft of the first book... finally.Â

"Seriously, who are you?â
Piek looked at June, and she sighed.Â
âHe canât tell us. Believe me, Iâve asked.âÂ
âSagittarius knows,â Theo said then, looking pointedly to him. âCanât you just tell us?â
Sagittarius looked very put-on-the-spot, and Piek turned his beady gaze to him now, staring as if he was daring him to say anything. Sagittarius only smiled weakly.
âNo,â he said resignedly, âIâd be in big trouble.âÂ
âThat other Celestial mage knew you too,â June said then, looking back to Piek and feeling suddenly invested in trying to get the truth out. âWhy does it seem like everyone knows you except us? Isnât that weird?â
âNot weird at all,â Piek replied, though he was looking increasingly uncomfortable with the conversation. âItâs simply the path youâre on. Youâre dealing with the stars.âÂ
âThe stars,â June repeated, exasperated. She looked at Theo, who looked equally as frustrated. He let out an impatient breath.
âFuck it. Weâll die not knowing, probably.â
âI wouldnât let that happen. At least not for June,â Piek said, with a bit of cheek. June let out a snort before she could help it, sneaking a sympathetic look at Theo; his jaw dropped. Sagittarius laughed too, reaching out to rest a hand on Theoâs shoulders.
âThen Iâll keep you alive,â he said, and when Theo looked back at Sagittarius, June could see his cheeks turning red under the light of the fire. She smiled to herself, feeling somewhat giddy from all of the cheerful conversation. It was nice feeling⌠distracted. Even if distraction was all it was.

as a treat
âCappy-â
âOh, donât call me that,â Capricorn said, exasperated. Her shoulders fell as she leaned back dramatically to look at Sagittarius, but only briefly; her gaze returned quickly to June and Theo, suddenly serious and stern. âListen, you two. Iâve taught you what I can. Even if it werenât for... well, everything, this is all I have to offer. Youâve already got a great teacher with you, even if it is⌠him.â
Despite her words, she hadnât spoken bitterly. June was surprised to see warmth in Capricornâs expression.Â
She leaned forward suddenly, taking both of Juneâs hands in hers and holding them tight and close together in front of her. Her eyes, warm and golden like melted chocolate and sunlight, looked steadily at June with sudden determination.
âI will join you on the battlefield. I promise.â

etddivine replied to your post âmaking progress todayâ
May I just say, I love how you change the color of your Google docs. I started doing it to mine, having one uniform color for every wip. So the outine, actual doc, and character paraphernalia are all in the same color. It really adds a unique feel to every story. P.S. Good luck with the timeline
oh right! I originally did it to make it easier on the eyes, and now I find I canât use white google docs anymore. Itâs so much nicer. I love the idea of using different colours for different wips too though, thatâs a great idea! All of mine are just different shades of Parchment-Ish. And thank you! :)Â
