How does one draw ancient-style characters? What skills does it require? The questions are all ones that beginners to art likely contend with. I’ve collected and organized online tutorials on drawing ancient-style characters into this for everyone. This tutorial is very simple, so come check it out!

1. Find a good dynamic reference. Use a brush with ink texture and create a relaxed sketch. Such illustrations generally require you to use ink brushes to achieve the ink aesthetic. These brushes can be downloaded online, or purchased from Taobao, etc. Generally, you would use fine brushes to draw line art and sketches.

2. Reduce the opacity of the sketch layer. Create a new layer and color in the character’s base colors. Leave light-facing sides blank, and you can mark the shadowed parts and the structural points of the clothes.

3. Clean up the line draft. The brushstrokes can be heavier, and the clothing style and fabric folds should be clearly indicated.

4. First-stage refinement: the shadowed parts of the skin can be colored with more saturated colors so the skin appears to have some translucency. Darken the shadowed parts of the waist cincher, and emphasize the ink texture in the transition points of its structure. In some places where there are extra brushstrokes, you can use a blur tool as appropriate. When drawing the eyes, you can add a little blue-green to enrich the pupil color.

5. Enlarge the brush and darken the shadows in the hair. Some parts of the hair can be blurred to make it look more natural. The light and dark parts of the clothing’s shadows should be depicted distinctly.

6. Clean up the unnecessary lines in the line art. Use line art to distinguish the darker details on the clothes and structure of the shoulder belt accessories. For the shadows in the pleats, you can use a high-saturation color to depict a sense of translucency. Note that a deep red layer has been clipped to the skin line art and line art for the facial features. When drawing the face, you can add some light colors to the lower eyelids.

7. When coloring metal, draw a clean outline first. Then, copy the layer, and adjust the bottom layer to black, so it naturally produces a black outline. Then, use a textured brush to color the light and dark parts, and transfer them onto the character. Finally, use the perspective tool to adjust its angle.

8. Deepen the contrasts of color tint and shade. Use a highly saturated color to outline the border between the skin and the clothes, clean up the excess lines and color blocks, add blur to some parts, and add a very light blue-purple layer to the hair. Increase the saturation of the shadows of the clothes at the back, and darken the dark parts of the metal. Note that when drawing with ink brushes, you don’t need to draw things too thickly. The line draft must be drawn with a natural and elegant feeling.
