Un giorno, a Ester viene commissionata una conferenza su un artista piuttosto noto, Hugo Rask. Ester si prepara, e nel farlo comincia a innamorarsi della figura dell’artista, come un’adolescente si innamora di un cantante di cui tiene il poster in camera. Quando infine lo incontra, la passione esplode. Ma è solo quella di Ester. Hugo è gentile, interessante, le scrive frequenti sms generici, di solito di notte, mentre «accanto a lei, nel letto, era stesa una persona che non esisteva». Cioè il fidanzato, che in men che non si dica viene liquidato, perché Ester è certa del senso di quegli sms, di quelle attenzioni, di quegli incontri nello studio dell’artista in mezzo alla corte di collaboratori adoranti, di quelle cenette intime e impreviste che certe volte seguono gli incontri nello studio. Ma durante queste cene, che si svolgono sempre nel ristorante dove Hugo è di casa, Ester si rende conto che la conversazione è a senso unico: «Nessuno dei due era interessato a lei ma entrambi erano interessati a lui».
