22 and/or 24 for hurt/comfort? Iâd love to see a minor (non heart-related) health emergency with Andy, if you donât mind. Your Shandy fluff is the best :)
Thanks so much, anon, I really appreciate it! Â
I got the inspiration for the health emergency from a Golden Girls episode, although itâs a little more severe here (but still okay).
Sorry about the overload, but I was working on these simultaneously, so I finished them at around the same time. Â I havenât forgotten the other requests :)
Sharon was starting dinner one evening and listening to music, and she barely heard Andy come in from work. He wrapped his arms around her from behind and started singing along to the music. âGet with it, baby, âcause youâre fine and youâre mine and you look so divi-ine. Come and get your loveâŚâ
âYou donât have to tell me twice.â Sharon turned her head to kiss him. Â
Andy pressed his lips to hers for a few moments before turning away and looking through the medicine cabinet. âAre we out of those Pepto Bismol caplets?â
âYeah, I gave Rusty the last two last night, why?â
âMy stomachâs kind of bothering me. I donât feel sick, itâs just kind of annoying.â
Sharon finished getting dinner together and put it in the oven. âIâll run out and get some more.â
âIâll get it.â Sharon gently pushed Andy toward the living room. âWhy donât you lie down until dinnerâs ready?â
âYeah, I think I will.âÂ
Sharon went to a nearby pharmacy and brought Andy a glass of water and the medicine when she got back. She sat on the couch beside him and ran her hand through his hair. âWhere does it hurt?â
âIt doesnât really hurt. This happened a couple of nights ago, and the medicine cleared it right up. Itâs probably just indigestion or something.â
âAll right. Dinner will be ready soon.â
After dinner, Sharon sat on the porch with a glass of wine and FaceTimed Emily just to watch nearly-eleven-month-old Marie toddle around until Emily finally ended the call to put her to bed. Sheâd been walking, albeit unsteadily, for a couple of weeks now. Emily had been an early walker, too. Her sister called after that, and after they talked for a while, Sharon went inside to get ready for bed. With Rusty locked in his room studying, she was hoping for some quality time with Andy, but he was already in bed and looked like âquality timeâ was the last thing on his mind. She hopped into bed beside him. âWhat happened to âcome and get your love?ââ
âItâll have to wait a couple of days,â Andy muttered.
âWhatâs the matter?â Sharon looked him over. He hadnât eaten much dinner, if any at all, but the medicine hadnât had much time to kick in then, and sheâd figured he would go back for more after his stomach settled a little. âDo you feel sick?â
âIâm starting to. Julio was out yesterday because Mark had a stomach bug, and I was around him a good bit the day before, and Iâm afraid I caught it from him. Earlier, I really just thought it was nothing, or I wouldnât have kissed you.â
âHoney. It would take more than the threat of a little stomach bug to keep me from kissing you, I can promise you that.â Sharon pecked him on the lips. âBut I believe this means that your and Rustyâs cracks about how my cooking has caused a depletion of Pepto Bismol were completely uncalled for.â Before she retired, she and Andy either took turns making dinner, cooked together, or got take-out, but sheâd been cooking herself more often since she was usually already home early in the evenings.  Rusty cooked every now and then, too. And, despite Andyâs and Rustyâs dramatics, sheâd never caused any of them any digestive trauma.  âCan I get you anything?â Andy shook his head. âWake me up tonight if you start feeling worse, or if you need something.â She gently nudged him over in the bed. âSleep on my side tonight, itâs closer to the bathroom.â
By the time Andy fell asleep, Sharon wasnât quite ready for bed, so she got another glass of wine and read on the porch for a while. Having a sick husband, especially with Andyâs medical history, was a bit like having a sick child, and she looked in on him occasionally until she was ready to go to bed. After making sure the path to the bathroom was clear and putting a glass of water on the nightstand beside him, she crawled under the covers. The sheets smelled vaguely of Andy, and the familiar comfort of his scent lulled her to sleep. Yeah, they were going to have to trade sides of the bed more often. Â
Sharon woke up a few hours later to go to the bathroom, and she could tell Andy was sitting up in bed beside her. She turned a lamp on and turned to him, a little disoriented from being on the wrong side of the bed. âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothing.â Andy winced and held his hand to the upper right part of his stomach. Â
Sharon quickly went to the bathroom, wrinkling her nose at the faint smell of vomit, and got back in bed. âIt doesnât look like nothing, it looks like youâre hurting. Have you gotten sick? Is your stomach upset?â Andy nodded. He knew she already knew the answer to that question. âAnd you didnât wake me becauseâŚâ
âI know this is hard for you to believe, but itâs possible for people in this house to vomit without you standing over them.â
âCut the crap, Andy, and tell me whatâs wrong.â
âJust a little pain. Iâm sure itâll go away. Itâs not low enough to be appendicitis, and itâs completely the wrong side to be my heart,â he quickly assured her.  He felt like he was being stabbed in the stomach and his back, but he couldnât bring himself to tell her that.  He was certain it wasnât his heart, otherwise he wouldâve woken Sharon up a while ago, and he wanted to give the pain some time to go away before he did anything about it.
Sharon raised her eyebrows. âNot every heart attack or case of appendicitis is textbook, Andy, this could possibly be either one.â She kissed his forehead and held the back of her hand to his cheek. âYou have a bit of a fever. Somethingâs not right. Iâm taking you to the ER.â
âIâd rather slam my balls in a car door.â Andy had had more than enough of hospitals in the last few years, both as a patient and a visitor. Â
âIâm sure I can arrange that, but weâre going to the hospital first.â
âSharon, I know Rustyâs and my hospital stints have spooked youââ
ââSpookedâ implies that my concern is unfounded, which is absolutely not the case.â Sharon reached over Andy to get his phone and scrolled through his contacts for his doctorâs office. âIâll call the on-call doctor in your doctorâs office and see what they say. If youâre so sure itâs nothing, Iâm sure theyâll agree.â She disconnected her call a few minutes later and threw on some sweatpants and a long-sleeved t-shirt over her nightgown. âWe have to go to the ERâŚAndrew Flynn, you get your ass out of that bed this second,â Sharon ordered when Andy didnât move.
âSuch great bedside manner,â Andy grumbled. Â
Sharonâs expression softened. âIâm sorry, honey, but Iâm worried, and Iâm a little concerned that youâre not worried.â She slipped into a pair of sandals and helped Andy out of bed. âYour shoes are by the door. Letâs go.â
âYouâll just have to change into a gown, anyway.â Sharon wrapped her arm around his waist and led him to the kitchen. She grabbed his wallet, her purse, and his flip-flops by the door and helped him to the car. Â
When they got to the hospital, Sharon helped Andy inside and to a seat before going to sign him in. After explaining the problem and some of Andyâs medical history, she was infuriated by the inaction of the woman behind the desk. âExcuse me, but my husband needs to be seen now.â
âMaâam, youâll need to fill outââ
âMaâam, you need to find someone who doesnât need help with the word immediately.â Sharon flashed Andyâs badge that she barely remembered grabbing on the way out the door. âYou donât want me to have to repeat myself, I can assure you.â
âOne moment, please.â
âYes, thatâs what I thought. Â Thank you.â
A little while later, it was determined that Andy needed to have his gallbladder taken out. Sharon kissed his forehead before going to the waiting room. âI love you. Iâll be here when you wake up.â She pointed at the nearest person to her, having no idea whether they were a doctor or nurse or orderly or what. âHe better wake up.â
A few hours later, Andy woke up and couldnât figure out where he was at first. He finally realized he was in the hospital, and the memory of having to have surgery came back to him. He remembered waking up in recovery and struggling to stay awake long enough for them to move him to a regular room so he could see Sharon, but heâd fallen asleep again while they were moving him there. He felt a soft hand encasing his, and he looked over to see Sharon sleeping in a chair right beside his bed with only the t-shirt heâd been wearing as a pillow. Damn, she had to be uncomfortable in that thing. Â
A few moments later, a pressing need made itself known, and he begrudgingly called for a nurse. He doubted he could get out of bed by himself, and heâd been in the hospital enough recently to know that the nurses wouldnât want him out of bed by himself at this point. Â
Sharonâs eyes fluttered when she sensed Andy stirring beside her, and she sat up and rubbed the back of her neck. âHey, howâre you feeling?âÂ
âNot so badâŚThey didnât give me anyâŚâ
âNarcotics? No. You still have a local anesthetic, and theyâll give you another one and some milder pain medicine before you leave the hospital. You okay?â
âYeahâŚI just, uh, need to get to the bathroom. I called for a nurse, but I donât think I can wait much longer.â
Sharon looked around for the receptacle the nurse had pointed out to her if this problem came up. âI can help you with this, or I can help you walk to the bathroom. I guess Iâm better than you trying to go by yourself.â
Andy shook his head. âIâm not using that thing, and youâre not coming to the bathroom with me, either.â
Sharon smoothed her hand over his cheek. âWell, if you really canât wait, then I donât see what other choice you have. Since when are you so shy about peeing in front of me, anyway?â That wasnât anything sheâd ever thought about doing in front of him, but he never thought anything about waltzing into the bathroom and taking care of business when she was in there doing something else.
âItâs not, uh, just pee,â Andy mumbled.
Sharon nodded in understanding. âThatâs okay, I really donât mind. Iâm sure the nurse wonât be long. Iâll help you get there, and then Iâll come back out here when the nurse gets here.â
âSure, letâs bring more people into this,â Andy grumbled. Sharon was right, it was his only option, so he reluctantly let her help him out of bed. A nurse mercifully arrived as they reached the bathroom, so he took over, and Sharon gratefully retreated back into the room. Â
Once Andy was back in bed and had been examined by the nurse, he looked over at Sharon. âI know my gallbladder had to be removed because of gallstones blocking it or something, but Iâm a little fuzzy on the details. What caused it?â
âTheyâre not sure,â Sharon answered. âAny risk factors you wouldâve had for it, you took care of years ago. Theyâve run a few tests to rule out some things, but itâs possible that your gallbladder was just inefficient and allowed gallstones to build up. This just happens sometimes without much of an explanation.â
âNiceâŚWhen can I go home?â Â
âProbably this evening, but tomorrow at the latest.â Sharon ran her hand over his forehead. âYour feverâs about gone, thatâs goodâŚIâm sorry about last night. Or this morning, rather. Iâm not the most pleasant person when Iâm afraid for someone I love. I guess I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.â
Andy nodded. âLiterally. Speaking of which, weâre going to have to switch sides of the bed more often.â
Sharon smiled. âI was thinking the same thing.â She leaned down and kissed his forehead. âI love you. Iâm so glad youâre okay.â Â
