JUDY HOPPS; CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

“Why wouldn’t you just become an investigator? Could help you still be able to be a cop, but don’t have to worry about running after people.” 

Judy considered the thought for a moment, it wasn’t as if she had to make the decision right this second, but it was good to think about the long term, or at least she thought so. “I mean it’s an option, but it’s certainly not the same. I know I’m going ti miss being out in the field when I’m not longer able to be out there.”

“This might be the Darcy in my head speaking but they totally go with your outfit and they would make your legs look amazing,” Scarlett said, “I love a sneaker as much as the next girl but sometimes you gotta wear a heel.”

“I think that is definitely Darcy in your head, I’m not sure you’d make such a comment if it weren’t for her influence.” Judy teased the other, looking at herself in the mirror before turning back to her friend. “Okay, so maybe they do flatter... certain aspects of my body, but when am I going to wear them. Give me three occasions and I’ll seriously consider the purchase.”

“I don’t blame you for wanting to protect the neighbourhood.” she grinned at the other as she watched the blondes eyes wander outside. “I think it’s honourable wanting to make the world a better place.” she commented as she nodded towards the other. “If you want to go say something i don’t mind waiting.” she admitted.

“I’m not sure I’d go as far as saying the world, I’ll settle for the town and it’s not all on my own. There’s definitely a team effort.” Because she’d definitely not take credit for all her work, she did have a partner after all. “No-.. no, I should try and switch my mind off from work on my day off, that’s the healthy thing to do.”

“Probably.” Annabeth admitted with a little bit of a laugh. “But it’s because you love your job and there is nothing wrong with that.” The red head told Judy with a smile on her lips. “And we couldn’t have anyone better looking out for us.”

“Well at least part of the community feels safe, makes me feel like I’m doing a good job.” Judy commented, warmth filling her upon hearing someone compliment her on her work ethics.

“Nothing wrong with doing what you love till you’re old! I mean, I’d love to be able to be one of those older guys who is still in the gym helping to teach people the right ways to do things.” He spoke with a bright smile. 

“Well hey, if you’re saying I can be a police officer up until I can’t got any faster then two miles per hour then you can totally be in the gym, lifting weights and running miles when you’re eighty.” Judy commented, smiling at the other.

“Alright these ones,” Scarlett said, “These are the ones. They’ll look great on you!”

“You think so? Aren’t they a little too- pink and high. I’m not used to wearing anything taller than a sneaker.”

His eyes moved from the papers in front of him to the woman, pausing a moment to even see if she was talking to him. “And what’s wrong with working to a later age? If it’s something you want to do, why stop?” 

“Because something tells me that being a police officer when I’m eighty isn’t very practical. Something tell’s me I won’t catch many criminals by shuffling and back pains.”

“Oh most definitely,” Nick chuckled. Noticing Judy’s eyes lingering to the car that was currently parking in a spot they shouldn’t have been, he looked back to her. “I won’t tell anyone if you decide you want to give them a ticket even off duty,” he added with a little grin.

“No- no, we came here for breakfast.” Judy told the other, fingers tapping on the table before she finally drew her attention away from the car and instead focused on her partner. “It’s rare we have the day off together, so I’m not going to think of work and enjoy it. With pancakes. And coffee. No crime, not today. You have my undivided attention.” She commented, eyes flitting to the window once more. “Kind of.”

“Well it’s certainly admirable that you enjoy your job so much,” Ophelia agreed with a shrug. “But I’d definitely have to agree that you won’t be able to do the same things you do now at eighty. Otherwise well– I’d be pretty alarmed if I called in a robbery and somebody sent an eighty year old to chase down a twenty-something running off with my valuables, you know?”

“What if I went to the gym every day up until that age? What if I was super fit? That’d be a good way to tackle crime, actually.” Judy pondered for a moment, “The criminal thinks they’re going to get away with it because this old woman shows up, then bam! They’re taken down in less than a minute.”

“Well I think it’s important that you’re so passionate about your job. It means you love what you do,” Raegan argued with a smile. “And you do great work. You’ve only got reasons to be proud.”

“True, but it does make my days off hard- I just to relax, breathe, do some hobbies. And not think about how that guy is parked in a permit zone, without a permit.” Judy commented, eyes darting from the window back to the other in front of her.

Ellie was just ending a private lesson, letting one of her students try to attack her in the way they thought would work best. Little did they know, it didn’t work that well. As she pinned them, the woman let out a breath before speaking. “Keep fighting like that and you’re going to lose every time.” Her voice was stern, but not mean. “Alright, hit the showers. We’ll continue in our next lesson.” She told them before standing up and starting to clean the room, unaware of who had just walked in the door. 

Judy had watched the session from the doorway, waiting for the students to exit before walking in and approaching the woman, “I’m going to make myself known now because I think sneaking up on you might be my worst decision to date, I don’t want to end up like the last guy. Pinned to the floor.”

“So, what’s the best thing to eat around here? I’m starved.” Medea decided to venture out for some food, deciding it might be easier to just grab food at the barbeque and eventually go back to work. 

“I’m probably not the best person to come to, unless you’re vegetarian- then I’m ready to talk your ears off about all the good alternative meat products you can get.”

This lady was not lighting up. Lucky for her, Shalia was always ready for a challenge. She squinted her eyes. “Well, if you must know, a little bit of everything. Tickets, food, slushies, whatever they need here. I’m kind of like a major helper around the barbeque.” She explained as nonchalant as she could be. “Whatever someone wants, I get it. As long as they got the money, of course.” She looked at the officer with a small smile. “And any kind of person is a customer… Even an officer such as yourself, I got you covered.”

“So you run around doing errands for people, like a personal assistant?” Judy questioned, not quite buying into the others innocence. She let out a hum, “Anything they want? Does that include things that are hard to find, things that people shouldn’t have?” 

“Okay there, Batman. Calm down,” Nick teased, knowing that she didn’t eat meat so the barbecue wasn’t entirely her speed. “I’m sure they’ve got veggie dogs or even just some grilled vegetables,” he shrugged as they made their way over. “Of course. Don’t tell me you brought them in a little Ziploc baggie with you today?”

“Now who’s being dramatic, I’m hardly a caped crusader.” Judy snorted, shaking her head a little as the other mentioned grilled vegetables. “Ah yes, the highest cuisine of all. Grilled veggies- people around here really need to continue to jump on the halloumi train.” Judy looked at the other like a rabbit in the headlights, being caught on her habits. “You say that like I wouldn’t find blueberries on you right now.”

“Kind of wish we didn’t have to be on duty,” he admitted with a shrug. “But, nobody said I couldn’t take my lunch break whenever I wanted,” Nick added, gesturing to a place selling hot dogs.

"Crime never takes a break, not even to sit down and have a hot dog.” Judy commented, scrunching her nose up slightly at the smell of meat in the air before turning to face the other. “But you’re right, they did give us a little bit more free reign today since there is so many of us out-..” Judy commented looking to the stand, “I’m only indulging if there’s a veggie dog, if not- I’ll stick to my carrots.”
