Dear friends, this is Dr. Dave.  Just over a year ago I discovered “The Fosters”, following the national press coverage after the Jonnor kiss aired.  As a married straight man who strongly believes in equality for all and LGBTQ rights, I was very impressed with this show on ABC Family and the messages they were trying to communicate.  I rewatched all the Jonnor scenes via the “Jonnor Nomad” You Tube page, and was very impressed by these two great young actors Hayden Byerly and Gavin MacIntosh.  I read interviews with them, and decided I would do what I could to support them in their careers and roles (sending positive comments via social media, getting autographs & videos via Social Ink, supporting their charities like Hayden’s Hope Totes and the Point Foundation).  I enjoyed seeing their story line develop during Season 3a. As summer 2015 went on, I became aware something was changing.  The story line late in season 3A was going astray, and Hayden and Gavin were no longer seen together after June.  Last August, when I was cyber-bullied for being one of Gavin’s fans, Gavin sent me a message, while he was shooting “American Fable” and with his limited IT access, to let me know he appreciated my support as his fan and to ignore any cyber-bullies.  I’ve been his avid supporter ever since.

We all saw the destruction of the Jonnor relationship during Season 3B, culminating in Monday night’s episode (which I did not see, but I’ve had it described to me).  I think the show and its producers failed many of its LGBT fans.  Most readers here know the real reason why Gavin left the show, and I won’t repeat it here.  But as anyone whose read his interviews knows, Gavin truly loved his role as Connor in The Fosters!  He was inspired by a gay uncle, and he had his family’s full support in the role.  I saw for myself, it was clearly very difficult for Gavin when he had to say “Goodbye” to Connor during that Snapchat on March 7.  But he had to do it, for his and his own family’s sanity and safety.

Jonnor is dead, and it is an “unnecessary bad!” There was so much potential to further inspire LGBT youth.  I will not watch “The Fosters” ever again.  I wish Hayden Byerly and all the other Fosters actors the best in their careers.  As for our friend Gavin MacIntosh, we know he is a great actor and model, loyal friend to his fans, avid supporter of LGBTQ causes, a caring, loving human being that brings out the best in many of us!  He just had a great movie premiere and many positive reviews for his role, which I predict will launch him on a great career!  Regardless, Gavin has helped teach me the importance to do what I can, when I can, to help and support important causes in ways I never did before.  May we all live lives that impact others, and inspire, and teach others to do such good!
