Psohi Psongs is a young Seaphid Padawan, a species I created inspired by seahorses. My 3½-year-old daughter came over to me while I was working on a drawing and asked, “What do the letters p-s-o-h-i say?” She kept giving me more letter combinations like Psongs, Hilmus, Hons, Ngossns, Jifngs, Jisdagj, Liano. Since she loves cute creatures, this drawing grew out of that moment.
Psohi moves with a naturally graceful rhythm even on land. Her tail is strong and flexible enough to spiral beneath her body. She moves in smooth, rolling “glides” that blend seahorse drifting with a sidewinder snake coil. Unaided by technology or the Force, she can coil her tail to launch herself up to thirty feet, and with both she can travel way further. Her lightsaber style involves sharp pivots, sweeping at opponents’ legs with her tail, and darting out of reach.
To aid Seaphid mobility even more outside water, she wears a lightweight repulsor-assisted belt designed by Seaphid engineers on her technologically advanced ocean world called Eliccathia. These belts are common among her people and provide a slight anti-gravity boost that’s even more fluid when augmented by the Force.
Seaphids come from an underwater society where family ties run deep. They are usually born in groups of three to five, and it’s common for families to have ten or more children. Like their seahorse inspirations, the male Seaphids carry and birth the young, a process lasting nearly a full year. Force sensitivity is extremely rare among them, making Psohi’s abilities especially significant.
Psohi is shy and doesn’t seek attention, when other Padawans buzz with energy Psohi listens. Her presence calms others. But beneath her quiet demeanor lies incredible Force sensitivity: especially in danger perception and reactive movement.
Her calm nature makes her the perfect stabilizing presence for more energetic friends, especially her closest friend, Nyra Mar, the outgoing Nautolan Padawan. Because both are aquatic species with similar interests, they spend much of their downtime swimming or teaching other Padawans to swim. Nyra has many friends, but Psohi is the one who helps her find center. And for Psohi, Nyra’s warmth and easy acceptance give her the courage to speak up to share ideas.
Psohi learned some hard lessons during one of her earliest missions with her Jedi Master, Ket Daf. They were sent by Grandmaster Luke Skywalker to begin the restoration process of the old Jedi temple on Dantooine. While Ket surveyed the ruins, Psohi befriended two 12 year old local farm girls who were snooping around the derelict temple. Naraya and Notah Vash, were the two inseparable Twi’lek twins. Later that day, Psohi and Ket responded when kath hounds attacked the girls on their way back to their farm. Ket suffered severe claw wounds to his face and back. Psohi avoided injury entirely thanks to her small size and Seaphid reflexes, but Notah was killed before the Jedi reached her, and Naraya was badly injured. The moment bonded the survivors and created a permanent force bond between Naraya and Psohi. The trauma made Psohi more determined to master the Force to protect others. When Naraya later entered the Coruscant temple as a beginning Jedi learner, Psohi visited whenever she could to mentor and encourage her.
For their next assignment, Psohi and Master Daf travel to Manaan, joined by Nyra and her Master, Sarmic Norshield. The mission is meant to push the Padawans’ underwater navigation skills, test their teamwork, and deepen their trust in the Force beneath the ocean’s surface.
