My Mad Fat Diary - Rae and Finn - Happy Birthday, Rae
RAEâS POV:
My 17th birthday officially sucked! Iâd fallen out with Chloe, Izzy and Chop had broken up and Finn had moved to Leeds. Archie was the only person who made an effort to bother with me, arriving at my door with a bunch of flowers, a card, a balloon and a birthday cakeâŚ
âYou really have gone all outâ I chuckled as we stood in the kitchen, me organising the flowers heâd bought me into a vase
âGot to when itâs my best friendâs birthday, havenât I?â he inquired
âShame no one else thought to botherâ I sighed, smiling at him weakly
âThereâs still time leftâ he replied âyou never know what might happenâ
âI doubt itâ I admitted âbut as long as Iâve got you, I know Iâll have a great dayâ
âWell, Miss. Earl, how about you go and get yourself dolled up and then we head down The Swan?â he suggested
âDo we have to?â I questioned, raising an eyebrow at him
âYou canât celebrate your birthday without an alcoholic beverageâ he proclaimed
âFineâ I sighed âgive me half-an-hourâ
FINNâS POV:
âGuys, theyâre comingâ Chloe informed Chop, Izzy and I as we stood in The Swan
âAre we meant to be hiding or what?â I questioned
âNo, but just shut up or else sheâll hear youâ she hissed
Sighing heavily, I shut up as she askedâŚ
RAEâS POV:
âItâs dead for a Friday nightâ I proclaimed, shocked
âYeah, maybe we should go somewhere else?â he suggested
âNo, weâre here nowâ I replied âcome on, letâs go insideâ
Archie nodded his head in agreement and opened the door for me and I gasped in shock as I saw Chloe, Izzy, Chop and Finn stood around a table, party poppers being set off as we walked inâŚ
âWhat is this?â I asked as Chloe hugged me tightly
âA happy birthday to our best friendâ she informed me âand our way of an apologyâ
I smiled at her warmly, my eyes meeting Finnâs as I hugged Izzy and Chop simultaneouslyâŚ
âLast I heard you were in Leedsâ I admitted as I reached him
âThings didnât work outâ he informed me âIâm not cut out to be a scaffolderâ
âWhatâre you gonna do then?â I inquired, raising an eyebrow at him
He shrugged his shoulders⌠âMy calling will come eventually. Happy Birthday, Raeâ
âThanksâ I replied, smiling at him warmly
âRight, birthday girl, get this down youâ Archie proclaimed, handing me a glass of cider
âThanksâ I chuckled as everyone clinked their glasses together
Later on that evening I was opening my presents when I came to Finnâs. Glancing around, I saw he wasnât there. Sighing heavily, I ripped off the wrapping paper, swallowing the lump in my throat as I came face-to-face with a record player. Heâd rememberedâŚ
FINNâS POV:
I stood outside the pub finishing off a cigarette when the door opened, Rae making her way outsideâŚ
âYou okay?â I questioned
âNot too badâ she informed me âwondered where youâd got to. Thought youâd done another runnerâ
âNahâ I chuckled âlisten, RaeâŚâ
âCan I? Before I lose the bottle?â she asked
I nodded my head, signalling yesâŚ
âIâm sorry about that night a few weeks ago when you came to see meâ she admitted, both of us recalling the night in question âmy head was all over the place and then you dropped this huge bombshell, I didnât know how to react or what to doâ
âDad said you came to see me the night I leftâ I informed her
âYeah, Iâd had a pretty shitty nightâ she replied âand I wanted to see youâ
âSorry I wasnât thereâ I sighed
âYou donât need to apologise. Youâve every right to get on with your lifeâ she informed me
âI donât have a lifeâ I admitted âIâm still as miserable as the night I came to see youâ
She didnât reply. As I was about to say something I was cut off by her lips on mineâŚ
âWhat was that for?â I questioned, shocked
âCall it a thank you for my birthday present. I canât believe you rememberedâ she admitted
âYou babbled on about it for the entire time we dated. Itâd be a crime if I didnâtâ I replied
âWell thank you all the same, itâs the most thoughtful present anyoneâs ever given meâ she informed me
âYouâre welcomeâ I stated âshall we get back inside?â
âCan we stay out here for a while? I like it, just the two of usâ she questioned
This is dedicated to my lovely Brogan â and again, no, it shanât be continued. Sorry!

17 Things To Actually Try This Year (Instead Of Just Talking About Them)
By Brianna West
Tell someone how you really feel, whether itâs good, bad, unpopular or ugly. Be polite, be tactical, but be honest. Stop discussing your true thoughts with everyone except the one person who needs to hear them.
Cut your hair the way youâve always wanted to. Do that one thing youâve always toyed with the idea of but were too nervous to try. At best, it will make you feel more âyouâ than ever before, and at worst, it will grow back anyway.
Get in a car and drive until youâre lost. Explore there.
Buy something from a store you always gawk at online. The balance to strike is finding something that is simultaneously of good quality but uniquely fits you and your lifestyle as well. Save up for it if you need to, but work toward that goal â reaching it will be unbelievably sweet.
Re-visit all of your old favorite places: the restaurant you used to have lunch in every day, the playground near where you grew up. Your old office, your college campus. Theyâre just as important as discovering your uncharted grounds.
Return to the places that have affected you most, for better and for worse. Neutralize the energy there. Realize the difference between who you once were and the person who is sitting there now. Realize that what happened has no hold on you in actuality, just in mentality.
Do a ceremonial bonfire where you write down all the things you want to let go of from the past year on pieces of paper, say them out loud, and then throw them in. See it as the beginning of a renewed effort to move on.
Create a sacred space of your own. It could be your bedroom as a whole, in a space set aside to meditate, on a board of photos of the people you love and the things you want, whatever. Itâs as simple as putting some flowers and favorite photos or pieces of art in your cubicle. Externalize whatâs internally important to you, even just representationally.
Pick up a book that you wouldnât normally be interested in and read it. Read it from cover to cover, even if, at times, youâre forcing yourself to get through it. Read until you find something within it that sparks your interest. There are always things left to be learned, always interests left to be discovered, itâs just getting past the anxiety of moving outside your comfort zone that stops you.
If you meet someone and start to develop feelings for them, donât play the game you know all too well: just ask them out. Be direct, be forthcoming, be real. It may result in a broken heart, but itâs better now then more of your life wasted wondering about âwhat ifsâ to eventually have to come to terms with a much harder truth.
Save up for and then take a trip to that one place youâve always talked about going to, but have never found the time or means to do so. There will always be another excuse not to go if you look for it. Donât let those excuses stand in your way.
Apply for the job you always talk about wanting to have âsomeday.â Or at minimum, apply for a job that will get you on the ladder to getting there.
Repurpose your clothing and make it true to whatever your style is now. Thereâs nothing quite like genuine vintage, and style is only as great as your ability to import personality into it is.
Put your phone down, turn your computer off, go out into the world and just live. Delete a social media account, temporarily or for good, and let it go. Realize that your own happiness will not be found in reading about the updates of othersâ lives. Take that technology-hiatus youâve always dreamed about.
Meet new people. The task of doing so seems so unapproachable and awkward, but itâs really not. Itâs a simple matter of going slightly out of your way in your day-to-day life. Frequent new shops, hang out with friends and have them invite other friends youâve never met before. Take a class, visit a new museum, walk down a different block. Strike up conversation with the people you come across. Companionship usually doesnât just fall in your lap.
Get tickets to see your favorite band play live. Getting lost in the music and the atmosphere is unlike anything else youâll ever experience again.
Decide who you want to be and become it. Not in an overly-optimistic but ultimately unrealistic sense â take baby steps. Change begins with the decision to do so. Learn to live a little more and fear a little less. Watch what unfolds as you do.

I hope he doesnât get to read this.
It was a coup dâoeil. I had a baffling superstition about my odd desire for watching the movie 16 candles again. This is shitty cheesy, but it turns out it was because my crush is back.Â
Heâs not only back, heâs grown into a fine young gentleman. He looks like Michael Schoeffling for christâs sake, with a sexy british accent. He stayed in the UK for the past three years and now heâs here, sadly, because his grandmother died. We were friends because of mtg, and I shamelessly still remember the exact date we first met and that he was wearing blue polo that day. We both were lol it was a training uniform. We were simple, civilized friends, until our common friends started teasing us. Right now, itâs actually hard to conceptualize why we became a sloppy love team in the first place. Nonetheless, I kept being in denial and saying heâs too tall for me that he looks like freaking Yao Ming and I was bonsai. Also, he is half british and apparently, I am half black African buffalo. Thus, the love team ârush hour" was born. What a wail! Although, itâs not necessarily as ominous as it seems. We actually became really close friends, like really close. Heâs probably familiar about every single detail of my life, minus a few discrete girl talks and the fact that I might have been actually in love with him (of course). I was never obvious. People already knew I was a guyâs gal, so hanging out with him frequently wasn't really an issue. I mean everybody knows, I'm one of the lads, basic shirts and jeans and all.
Back to the present. I havenât had a crush crush ever since he left three years ago and perhaps, my friends noticed I havenât also been very active in mtg after he left. So they actually set up a small surprise. Geb and Dean invited me to go out for a cup of coffee because I was feeling terrible. I was still sad because itâs really hard coping up after losing someone you truly care for. Anyway, as we arrived in the coffee shop, I noticed a tall guy pussyfoot to the other corner of the shop. I knew I recognized him so I asked Geb if he knew who was that guy whoâs awkwardly facing the glass window. She started laughing and I had no clue why. Until I saw Dean hand the tall guy three stems of sunflower. And there he was. Holy sh*t.
I could have fixed myself better, or at least combed my hair before heading out, if only they told me he's already back. I looked like bloody mary of christmas past. I was in a winter-ish sweater and my hair gave someone the impression that my hair probably got caught up in an ceiling fan.Â
Until he gave those cute little flowers and then I saw a load of glitters and unicorns everywhere. Some sweet late valentine.
