Okay okay I know most of the fanbase calls Jotaro's wife "Marina" but ngl I've always felt it's a little lackluster so I was wondering, do you have any ideas about her name other than that?

hmmmm okay interesting. you made me stop and think about this one. i have a like/dislike relationship with names other than Marina for her, for mainly two reasons:

i know Dolly is a fairly popular alternative, but i just don't like it. it just makes me think of sheep or Dolly Parton, who, while i love her as a person, is... not at all what i picture when i think of this character. it feels possibly even more on the nose for me than Marina does.

the other reason i am challenged by, is that when people name her something other than Marina or Dolly, it feels like a completely original character altogether, and i have a hard time connecting with that reading because whatever insert-creator-here is doing, it doesn't feel like my version of her, and my brain defaults to "she would not fucking say/do/whatever that. >:["

(this is my own personal hangup. there is never going to be any "correct" way to portray her unless Araki decides to do more than the rock bottom bare minimum for her character, which i highly doubt will happen.)

at least "Marina" feels kinda like we're all on the same page with the same character. or at least trying to be.

that being said, there's... literally no way whatsoever to portray her "canonically" because we as a fandom can only, at best, infer her personality from the characters and situations that surround her (and boy do i spend a lot of time inferring that information. i've lost sleep over this.)

anyways, keen-eyed viewers will have noticed that i associate her character pretty heavily with moon flowers, and this is for good reason. there's... a lot of lore and thought and symbolism for my own story within this choice, and i could honestly yap for hours about why in context of the story i'm writing but i've already written an entire novel in response to a simple ask oh my goth.

tldr.

i'd call her Lilith.

specifically for the meaning associating the name with night/the moon, and the deeper cut around patriarchal independence and women/protection of women. not meant in this case to be edgy or associated with demons in any particular way. (but also it is, just a little tiny bit, as a treat, in response to the rampant fandom misogyny that spends way too much time and energy outright hating characters like this for "getting in the way of" insert-popular-gay-ship-here. y'all make me tired.)

#listen. listen. joot gets ALL the credit for why jolyne is the way she is. for some reason. and i DO give him partial credit for that #(i am NOT team 'he was a completely absent deadbeat who never did any parenting ever in his life.' that's just a shallow reading imo)#mama was not only consistently present but also J's primary caregiver. it's stupid to just ignore that detail.#and as the child of a Very Single mother maybe i'm biased. but even if a person is checked-out or passive or sad (re:mama cujoh lore)#it still takes a tremendous amount of strength to do that fuckin job and she SHOWED UP to do it any which way you cut the story #jolyne is kinda dumb and helpless and naive at the beginning.#which tells me that her parent(s) put a LOT of fucking work into making her life comfortable enough that she COULD be.#that she didn't HAVE to be street smart or strong just to get by. give her mama the credit she deserves damn #waifu's words #3am painkiller thoughts. no idea how coherent any of this is #i fear i've lost the plot
