RITMO launched its first project called JoomaJam, a fun manual and music album that lets parents use technology as bridge to their kids high-tech world.  JoomaJam has lessons like Colors performed by Barbie and Julianne,Saving Money by the Dawn, and Making Friends by Itchyworms. It also includes nice songs that can be played in both English and Filipino. The first release has a total of 18 tracks.

JoomaJam, according to RITMO is a kid-tested, teacher-approved collection of educational OPM (Original Pilipino Music) in bilingual format which is accompanied by a lesson plan with recommended activities and resources. JoomaJam is both available as an App in iTunes and in iBooks.

What started out as a pre-school teacher’s frustration has led to a first-of-its kind app that uses music to teach kids not only about life skills and concepts but also an early appreciation of homegrown music.

Ritmo Learning Labs, a start-up supported by Globe Telecom’s accelerator/incubator firm Kickstart Ventures, launched its first project dubbed JoomaJam this Tuesday to break the traditional teaching mould through song.

We’ve already seen a number of great educational tools from tech startups in Asia. In the Philippines, a social enterprise startup RITMO Learning Lab is creating a new addition to that list. It has developed Joomajam, a combined iOS app and iBook manual and music album, intertwining music with e-learning for kids.

Learning through Filipino music

So what makes Joomajam different?

To make it more unique, the team decided not to stick with the classic pre-school songs that we already know like Twinkle, Twinkle, and Humpty Dumpty, among the many others.

These, and more, are made possible through social enterprise Ritmo’s Learning Lab’s JoomaJam project, a fun and colorful music album that lets parents use technology to teach their children lessons ranging from colors, numbers, even skills like making friends, and saving money.

With today’s trying times, after the recent supertyphoon destroyed many school buildings in Visayas, including school materials, affecting as much as four million children in the calamity’s aftermath, resilient and sustainable educational tools are needed more than ever.

The team also recognizes the part music plays in children’s education. Vin says “being silly and a lot of laughter is a mark of a healthy childhood, and music can help make that happen.”

The collection of music is bilingual, in English and Filipino. It’s accompanied by a parent guide, which shows a lesson plan with recommended activities and resources. This content can be used through one’s iPhone (using the app) and iPad (using the iBooks).
