“Everything feels different round here and yet… nothing ever seems to change, huh?”
Jonas Tate grew up as the protector of his little sisters Abigail and Becky. Their father was a drunk and sometimes he got quite out of control, once even throwing all Abi’s belongings out on the front garden while in a drunken rage. Their mother worked herself practically to death just so she didn’t have to be around the man while he drank himself to sleep every night. It was quite a mess, to put it lightly, and Jonas didn’t always know how to really make the situation better. He was older by five years and it seemed like Abigail always got the worst of it. Becky got the least. Jonas was stronger than their dad anyway but it’s not like the man ever really got physically violent with anybody else, it was more throwing things around and shouting, which was pretty exhausting and probably scarier for his sisters than for him. But he did his best - not every day was that way, thankfully - and he and his sisters were quite close. He and Abigail were both in the popular crowd too so they ran in the same-ish circles.
Jonas had always had his eye on Emily Lane, who was a model and quite an amazing person, and he hated when she dated Tyler Kirk because he didn’t like the way the guy treated her. She deserved better so when they broke up, Jonas decided to make his move. They were only together briefly and he feels like it was a rebound for her but he still cherishes the time they had regardless. Emily is someone that no guy who’s lucky enough to get her should let go of, but maybe the timing wasn’t right or she wasn’t ready. Jonas doesn’t know but even though they broke up, he always sort of held a candle for her.
Jonas moved to London for university but he was very good about returning home to visit his sisters, once Abi came home from some road trip she went on with her high school boyfriend, ages ago now. He always kept in touch with her, she was the most important person in his life aside from Becky. Abigail then went on to skip town a couple of times a few years back and then, finally, stopped coming home altogether. It was actually months before Jonas heard from his sister again and the relief was unbelievable. He was so glad she’d reached out and he made her promise never to cut him out like that again. They’re close again now and he makes sure to keep in touch with her all the time, though she refuses to come home, but he can always visit once she finds a permanent place to call home. For now, she’s travelling and soul searching, and he feels like it’s good for her so he doesn’t nag, just worries quietly about her.
When Jonas returned to Baberton a couple of years ago, he came back to a town full of murder and mayhem. It was crazy. Everything feels the same and looks the same but… everything’s changed too. People are dead, people have left, new faces… nothing seems to be getting done by the police but that’s why Jonas is here to help really, along with be closer to his remaining sister. He’s currently a criminal profiler, having finished all his studies, and he’s determined to help the local police find this killer once and for all, and put an end to all the madness.Â
He knows about the way that Ryan Fletcher used to treat his sister when they were together. He didn’t know anything at the time but now that he does (both Abi and Charlie Baker have told him bits and pieces - the latter only after some serious pushing from Jonas after a phone call with his sister ended in tears and she simply told him to “go ask Charlie” before she hung up.) Jonas is furious that Ryan used to hurt his sister, and that he seems to have a pattern of getting away with this, and he’s made it his mission to go after the guy and take him down, get him put behind bars where he belongs. He’s sick in the head and Jonas wants him off the streets for good, before he can ruin some other poor girl’s life. He just needs some proof.
