Dojikko hakase needs supervision

His face lit up when Sans confirmed that he could see him. Of course as soon as that happiness was there it was gone. A monster he didn’t recognize? Sure, he looked like hell right now but he didn’t think he was that unrecognizable. He still looked like a skeleton last time he checked. A him shaped skeleton at that. Unless Sans… didn’t remember him. 

It was possible but he had always assumed that Sans did, he had knowledge of timelines and knew when resets happened, so why didn’t he recognize him? Was his falling into the core something beyond the scope of even a reset?

He was brought out of his thoughts by Sans’ question. 

“I was… making sure you weren’t going to die.” He admitted awkwardly.

Yeah, because that wasn’t ominous at all.

“That is to mean… I thought you were hearing something that wasn’t me so I was checking to see if you were hurt in some way. Normally you don’t notice me so I didn’t even think about…” Normally… and now he sounded like some kind of creeper. 

“Ah… forgive me, I’ve probably frightened you. I just haven’t talked to anyone in many years and that hasn’t done well for my communication skills. But… I must ask… do you really know nothing of me Sans?” 

This isn’t really how he envisioned this reunion happening. He always figured there would be more hugs… and a lot of bad jokes. 

Sans’ eye sockets narrowed, eye-lights dimming further, nearly flickering out at the stranger’s words.

*... heh. takes more’n that to dust me. i ain’t fallin’ down quite yet.

He paused, purposefully shifting into a relaxed position, hands in his pockets. Whomever this was, he didn’t seem like he was planning on attacking or anything like that. Besides, this was a monster clearly, not some human who could be unpredictable even at the best of times. Most monsters wouldn’t ever just up and hurt people.

Not that there weren’t always exceptions to the rule.

* so... what’ya mean by ‘normally’? you make it a habit to watch me when i ain’t lookin’? cause buddy, you gotta admit that’s kinda creepy. if you wanted t’get t’know me, s’lot easier to just walk up ‘n say hi.

Another pause, this time with Sans arching a brow bone at the other figure.

Gaster jumped back, spinning around to see who had startled him so badly. Only there was no one near enough to be in Sans’ face. He turned back around looking horribly confused, glancing over his shoulder once or twice just to make sure he wasn’t missing something. 

“Well this is concerning to say the least.” 

What the hell made Sans jump like that? Was a human playing a prank? Was there something he wasn’t seeing? Was Sans in poorer health than he realized?

Was he…

Was he able to… see him?

That couldn’t be right. 

But if it wasn’t… well that would have to be one hell of a string of coincidences.

Slowly, hesitantly, he approached the stand again, leaning over slightly while looking equal parts concerned and confused. 

“Can you… actually… are you talking… to me?” 

It couldn’t be. All these years of following these two when they were close enough to his domain, only now for him to be seen?

Sure enough, the small disks of light that made up Sans’ pupils were fixed on the blob-like see-through-ish monster as he moved, though their size shrank to almost nothing as the other monster moved closer. The grin on his face wavered a little, looking more like an uncomfortable grimace.

* uh... well, buddy, i don’t see anyone else around. i mean, i barely see you as it is. ‘course, i could just be talkin’ to a figment of my imagination, but usually i ain’t so imaginative as to make up a monster i don’t recognize.

Then again, there was that nagging sense that he knew who this was, though for the life of him he couldn’t seem to recall exactly. And when stuff like that happened, it made him antsy. That usually meant something time-based had been going on, something he’d been made to forget, even if there was some lingering déjà vu going on.

* so... uh... y’wanna tell me why you decided to get all up close and personal, pal?

Gaster tilted his head with a frown. That was one heck of a coincidence that he heard something the same time he decided to speak up. He hadn’t heard anything… 

“Maybe you should go home and rest up kid.” 

“I think the humans are starting to get to you.” 

It didn’t even cross his mind that he was the thing Sans heard. He had long since accepted the fact that he was just plain non-existent to everyone.

All the same…

He whisped himself up closer to the skeleton, stopping just a few inches from his face, scrutinizing him closely. Personal space wasn’t a thing when the other party couldn’t even perceive your presence. 

He didn’t seem to be in terribly poor health and knowing Sans he was getting plenty of sleep. His frown deepened. Maybe it was just a stress thing.

There it was again, that voice that shouldn’t exist and tugged at ragged, frayed holes in his memory from years ago. The fact that he wasn’t certain if he was actually hearing it, or if his inner voice decided to play a trick on him while thinking his own thoughts wasn’t helping. Irritably, he cracked an eyelid open just to make sure that someone hadn’t walked up in the meantime.

He certainly wasn’t expecting what he saw.

Sans gave a startled yelp, his entire body flinching away from the spectral-looking cracked skull that had apparently decided to situate itself right in front of his face. The action had been severe enough to knock over the stool he usually sat on as his back banged into the backside of the stand.

* whoa! h-hey buddy! didn’t anyone ever tell ya it’s rude to get in people’s faces like that?

After the barrier was finally broken Gaster took it upon himself to watch out for the monsters that decided to try and coexist with humans, not that he could do anything but keep tabs. It sure beat the hell out of sitting in that one room in waterfall he was confined to up until the break however. 

Admittedly his two favorite subjects to shadow were the skeleton brothers. It made him feel better about his… situation that they were living their lives free.

Today he was ghosting around Sans who was working an ice cream stand. After a particularly rude customer Gaster scoffed. “You should have told her to make like a banana and split.” If only Sans could hear him, he knew that the skeleton would have gotten a laugh out of that.

Okay so maybe the piece of work that was walking away hadn’t been the most... pleasant to deal with, putting up a fuss about not having this, that or the other flavor she apparently wanted, but hey, it was par for the course being up here on the surface. The shorter Skeleton Brother was getting used to this kind of treatment in the various jobs he took ‘round town to keep him and Papyrus with a roof over their heads and food on the table. Now, granted, this didn’t mean that he was expecting to hear the thought in his head echoed out in real life, in a distorted font-language we was pretty sure wasn’t spoke by anyone still alive. The perpetual grin on his face grew strained, tight and forced as his head whipped around to where he thought he heard the voice from, eyes dark as he scanned the surroundings, peering through the darkness.

*... heh.

* could’ve sworn i heard...

* ... nah. i’m just bone tired s’all. last thing i need is just one more rude customer before i scream that at ‘em all.
