Natalie is standing in line at the small coffee shop.
Mariella is standing beside her.
"Thanks for inviting me for coffee. It's been a while since I've been out of the house." she tells Nat.
"I don't mind. I told Nate I would reach out. Could definitely use some girl time." Natalie tells her.
"Absolutely, I am always down for some girl time. Lord knows I need to. I don’t have very many friends either. I speak to the other wives, but it's just not the same. And don't get me started on Tammi." Mariella glances briefly at Nat with wide eyes.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said her name." Natalie waves her hand dismissively.
"It's fine. I was the one who chose to end things. So I now have to deal with the outcome."
They grab their coffees and walk out of the shop.
They continue to walk down the street.
Natalie's phone dings with a text message.
She looks at it, and it is Sammy.
'Where are you?'
She ignores it and slides her phone into her back pocket.
"He doesn't make it easy; that's for sure." Natalie rolls her eyes.
Mariella gives her a look.
"Let me guess, Sammy?" she asks.
"He's mad at me one minute and says that we need to be professional, then the next he's sending me a message asking me where I am. He's driving me crazy." she rants.
"Where are you supposed to be?" Mariella asks her.
"Gil is giving them the rundown of the stakeout. I don't want to be there, so I'm not." she informs her friend.
"I remember Gil. Nate was always talking about him. I met his wife a few times. They came over to our old house after we had gotten married." Mariella says.
"Gil is a good guy. But I don’t think Sammy likes him very much. He seems put off by him." Natalie comments.
"Do you have to meet them later?" Mariella asks.
"Yeah, I have to go over later and help with the stakeout. But I'm dragging my feet." Natalie jokes.
"I don't blame you. Hey, I gotta make a stop here real quick." Mariella points to Box Club.
Natalie chuckles.
"Really? Box Club?" Natalie jokes.
"Yes. I save a ton of money coming here. Sammy is the one who told Nate and me about this place. They have amazing deals." Mariella informs her as they walk through the sliding door.
"You sound so domestic and shit."
Natalie bumps her hip into Mariella's teasingly.
"Just you wait til you get married. You'll be sounding the same way. Trust me."
Natalie gives her a disbelieving look.
"Me married? No way in hell that is ever going to happen."
They continue to walk down the aisles.
Mariella grabs a basket and starts piling meat into it.
"We're having a cookout tomorrow. You should totally come. I have a few single cousins who are right up your alley." Mariella teases as they walk to the checkout line.
"Am I really that pathetic that I need you to hook me up with your family members?" Natalie whined.
"You're not pathetic. But I think you won't get over Sammy until you meet someone else." Mariella gives her a pointed look.
"You're right. I hate it, but you're right."
As they're standing in line, they hear someone arguing with the cashier, who is holding up the line.
"Why can't I just use my husband's card?" The woman shouts.
"I'll be right back."
Natalie makes sure her badge is shown as she walks to the front of the line.
"Everything ok here?" Natalie asks.
The woman turns, and it is Tammi.
Natalie's eyes widen slightly.
Tammi scoffs and stomps her foot.
"Of course it's you. Why are you always around!?" Tammi shouts in frustration.
"Ma'am, I need you to either go buy your own card or leave." the cashier states.
"This is ridiculous. Why can't I just use my husband's card? You're trying to scam me into spending more money!" Tammi shouts.
"Alright, you're holding up the line, Tammi. Either pay for your own card, or you're gonna have to leave." Natalie goes into cop mode.
Tammi rolls her eyes.
"You're just mad that I'm pregnant with Sammy's baby. You didn't think I knew about you? I knew Sammy was falling for you. But I won. You lost."
Tammi stands toe-to-toe with her, gloating in her face.
"I'm going to say this one more time. Either go pay for a membership card or leave. If not, then Sammy can go pick you up for disorderly conduct. Your choice." Natalie's voice is real low as she makes herself clear.
"AHHHHH!"
Tammi stomps her feet as she quickly turns and leaves the store.
"My husband is a detective of the Los Angeles Police Force! He's going to hear about this!" Tammi screams as she leaves.
Everyone in line starts clapping and laughing.
Natalie takes a deep breath and goes back to stand with Mariella, who is trying to keep a straight face.
Natalie pulls into the parking lot where the stakeout van is.
She gets out of the car to see Nate and Sammy already there with Gil.
"Where the hell have you been?" Sammy questions curtly.
"I had the morning off. I spent it with Mariella." Nate turns his head at the mention of his wife.
"You guys do anything fun?" Nate asks.
Natalie shrugs.
"We went for coffee. Ran into Tammi, though." Natalie states as she glances at Sammy.
He sighs and rolls his eyes.
"Where did you see her at?" he asks.
"At Box Club. Oh, by the way, I had to make her leave. She was causing a scene. So she's probably gonna whine to you about that." Natalie pats his shoulder as she climbs past him into the van.
"Wait, what?" Sammy looks confused.
She sits beside Nate, who is writing down the different plate numbers that are coming in.
Sammy turns back to the shop with his binoculars.
"I'm getting another Escalade. But no plates." he tells them.
"Come on, bro. I need the plates. How you tell me there's an Escalade with no plates?" Nate busts Sammy's balls.
Gil starts laughing.
"That's like saying you cuff someone with no cuffs." Gil laughs.
Natalie shakes her head.
"You're such a dipshit, Gil. Clearly, the car is stolen if the plates are missing. Make sure we get the recorded evidence of that." Natalie grabs the laptop and starts typing up the report.
"Switch with me." Sammy says to Nate.
Sammy grabs the paperwork that has plates written down from Nate as they switch.
Sammy's leg bumps against Natalie's as they briefly lock eyes.
"So, Sammy, man, you never answered my question: is your wife pregnant yet?" Gil questions.
Natalie tries to not listen to the conversation.
"Yeah. We just found out." Sammy answers quietly, glancing briefly towards Natalie, who is avoiding his gaze.
"That's right, you horny bastard!"
Gil punches Sammy in the arm, bro style.
"Now we just gotta get this girl all wifed up." Gil jokes, pointing to Natalie.
She finally looks up at them and glares at Gil.
"Do you want to be punched in the throat?" she questions rhetorically.
"Girl, it's been over a year since you've been with that douchebag Shawn. Time to get back out there." Gil encourages.
Sammy narrows his eyes as Natalie tenses.
She can feel his gaze on her.
"Who the hell is Shawn?" Sammy questions.
"Man, he worked with us in DC. Guy was all over her. They were hot and heavy for years. But it turns out he was corrupt, and she had to arrest him." Gil fills him in.
"How come I never knew this?" Sammy asks Natalie.
She finally turns her gaze to him.
"It wasn't something that you needed to know. Can we not talk about Shawn, please?" Natalie glares at Gil.
She still feels Sammy's gaze on her, but she refuses to look at him.
"I'm just saying, girl. I know a bunch of good guys who would love a chance with you."
She sighs and finally glances up from the laptop.
She spots Sammy's jealous look.
"Fine, Gil. I'll bite. It has been a while. Which one of your boys do you think I would vibe with?" She asks just to get a rise out of Sammy.
It works because his eyes blacken over with jealousy as the clipboard falls from his hands.
The loud impact causes them to jump.
"What the hell? You got some butterfingers, man." Gil scoffs.
"Yea. Whatever." Sammy mumbles.
Nate glances back at them.
"Sammy, come here. Isn't this that kid Orlando that we busted last year?"
Nate hands the binoculars to Sammy as he sits down beside him.
"Yes, it is. Let's go get him. We can pop him right now for gang association." Sammy and Nate take off from the van.
Natalie shakes her head at Gil.
"What the hell are you doing? Why are you being so weird?" she questions him.
"What's going on with you and that Sammy guy? Do you guys have history or something?" Gil interrogates.
She's sitting on the hood of her car when the boys come back.
"What happened? Did you get him?" she asks.
"No. Dickhead lawyered up." Nate tells her.
"So are you coming to the cookout later?" Nate asks her.
"Yeah. I might pop in for a little while. I'm always down for food." she jokes.
"Hell yeah. I know Mariella will be excited." he responds.
"We talked about it earlier. She says she got a couple of cousins that she wants me to meet." Natalie chuckles.
Nate laughs.
"Oh no. I know exactly who she's talking about. You would eat them both alive." Nate jokes.
Sammy glares at them.
Jealousy steams through his veins as he has to listen to his coworkers trying to set Natalie up.
The thought of her with another man drives him crazy.
He watches as she says a few more things to Gil and Nate.
Her phone rings, and he watches her walk away to answer it.
Nate and Gil both turn to him.
"Alright, I have to know. What the hell is the history between you two?" Gil asks Sammy.
Nate chuckles.
"Bro, it is so angsty you don't wanna know."
Nate warns him as Sammy glares at his partner.
"Nat and I used to be good friends. We went through the academy together. We had one night together before she left. She came back to LA, and I thought we were gonna start something. But she left again." Sammy tells him.
Gil raises his eyebrows in shock.
"Damn. Well, tell me this. If your wife wasn't pregnant, would you still be with her?" Gil asks.
Sammy shakes his head.
"Hell no. I went to serve her papers when she told me. I'm only in love with one woman, and it ain't my wife." Sammy tells him.
"That sounds super messy to me, brother." Gil comments.
Nate nods his head in agreement.
"That's what I've been saying. But in Sammy's defense, he was ready to go all in with her, and she just leaves town." Nate chimes in.
"Yeah, but didn't she have to go back to DC for that witness?" Gil asks.
Natalie walks back over to the van, and they all quit talking.
She looks at them all suspiciously.
"Y'all were talking about me, weren't you?" She crosses her arms with attitude.
"Just saying how nice and quiet it is without you around." Gil jokes.
"Yeah-yeah, whatever. I have a lead on someone who might talk to us about Trinny. I'll let you know how it goes." she tells them.
"Do you need one of us to go with you?" Gil shouts as she walks to her car.
"I'm a big girl. I can handle myself." she shouts back.
Natalie is laughing about something Alonzo is saying when a hand wraps around her arm and yanks her around.
Sammy is standing behind her, glaring daggers at Alonzo.
"I need to talk to you." Sammy growls as he drags her down the hall.
He pushes her into the bathroom and shuts the door behind him.
"What the hell is your problem?" she hisses at him.
She pushes him away from her.
"You really need to stop doing that." she glares at him.
"I don't like this. I don’t like the fact that you came back and are flirting with another man right in front of me!"
He stalks closer to her.
She steps back until she's pressed against the sink.
Natalie scoffs and avoids eye contact.
Sammy grabs her chin firmly so she can't escape.
"Let go, Sammy. I'm trying real hard not to fight back." she glares at him.
"Where do you get off flirting with Mariella's brother, huh? He's not good enough for you."
Natalie grabs his wrist and twists his arm behind his back.
She shoves him into the door.
He narrows his eyes and easily slips out of her grip.
"Damn it, Sammy! Are you still married?" she questions.
He huffs and narrows his eyes.
"Yes." he growls.
"Is Tammi still pregnant?" she continues.
"You know she is." he responds.
"Are you staying with her?" she continues.
He stays silent and averts his eyes.
Natalie holds back tears at his response.
"Then, honey, we have nothing else to talk about."
She loses the fight in her voice as she moves away from him.
"This can't keep happening. You can't keep acting like the jealous ex-boyfriend because you're not. Do you think it's easy for me to know that Tammi is pregnant? No, it's not. But you don't see me acting all jealous over it. Grow up. Be there for your wife. Let me move on from you." She says softly.
He finally locks eyes with her.
"I can't. And I don't know if I want to. I will fix this. Because I can't stand the thought of you being with someone else. Give me time to figure shit out."
He grabs her face before he decides to leave the bathroom, before he does something he'll regret.
Natalie waits a couple of minutes before she leaves the bathroom.
She finds Mariella instantly.
She was standing, talking to her brother.
"There you are. Where did you run off to?" Mariella asks her.
"Nate's partner dragged her off somewhere. Glad to see you're still alive." he comments.
Mariella gives her a confused look.
"It’s a long story. He just had to go over some things with me. Work stuff."
Natalie gives Mariella a look that says she needs to talk to her.
"Alonzo. Can you go check on the baby for me?" Alonzo rolls his eyes.
"I know when I'm not wanted."
He turns to Natalie with a flirty smile on his face.
"I hope to talk to you again." he tells her with a wink.
They grab a couple of wine coolers and walk outside to the backyard.
They sit down at the picnic table by the house.
"Alright, talk to me. What's going on?" Mariella asks.
Natalie takes a long sip of her drink.
"Sammy is testing my patience, that's what." Natalie comments.
"You guys need to figure out your situation. You're giving Nate and me whiplash." Mariella tells her.
Natalie hangs her head in shame.
"I know. I know. I try to move on, and he causes a scene. But yet he's the one who's still married and has a baby on the way. I can always just kick his ass." she mumbles.
"I'm sure that will make you feel better. But let's be real. You two love each other. Yes, things are complicated with Tammi. What do you want? Do you want to be with Sammy?" Mariella asks her.
"Lord help me, I'm in love with the idiot." Mariella gives her a small encouraging smile.
"Here's to loving idiots."
She raised her glass bottle, and they clinked them in a cheers gesture.
"On another note, did you hear about that new club opening up on North Hollywood?" Natalie asks her.
"Girl, I haven't been to a club in so long." Mariella tells her.
"Come on, it'll be fun. We should have a girls' night. We just dance and have some fun." Natalie sticks out her lower lip in a sarcastic pout.
Mariella shakes her head.
"I'm not Sammy. That's not gonna work on me." she jokes.
"It'll be fun. You have been stuck at home taking care of those beautiful babies. It's time to remind yourself that you are still a sexy woman." Natalie continues to beg.
"Alright. Fine. I'll run it by Nate and see when we can go out." Mariella finally relents.
"You're the best. We both know Nate won't have a care in the world about you going out for a few hours." Natalie states.
They clink their bottles one more time as they continue to drink.

She struggles to ignore everything in her to delete the contact and move on from him.
But all she can think about is him.
"Natalie Ventura!"
She quickly shoves her phone back in her jacket pocket and clears her face of all emotion.
She looks up to see an old friend of hers rushing over to her.
Gil Puente struts down the hall, welcoming her with open arms.
He pulls her into a tight hug.
"Damn girl, look at you! You're over here making moves. Hell yeah!"
She chuckles and smiles brightly.
She feels like she hasn't smiled in ages.
"How are you doing? It's been so long since I've seen you. How's the wife and kids?" she asks.
"They're great. We're actually moving back to LA. I'm just here to wrap up a case." he informs her as they walk down the hall.
"I was just there about 6 months ago. Came back up for the case," she replies.
"Yeah. I heard all about it. Marta Ruiz. That's a career changer. Could really use you on this new task force I'm putting together." he throws out there.
"I don't know if I'm ready to get back out there. This one took a lot out of me." she admits.
"I heard about your partner. I'm sorry. I know it can't be easy."
They walk out to the parking lot.
"Alex was a good person and agent. She was also a friend. I will miss her a lot. But I'm glad to finally bring her killer to justice." she replies.
"Look, I'm only here for a couple more days. Think about it and give me a call. Do you still have my number?" he asks her.
"Yeah, I still have it. Look, just send all the information to me, and I'll check it out." she tells him.
"Sounds like a plan, momma. Be hearing from you soon."
"I have a restraining order against you, Shawn. Go home." she shouts back through the door.
"You're making a big mistake, babe. You know I can get to you wherever you are." He continues to taunt through the door.
She has had enough and opens the door.
Shawn has a smug smirk on his face.
He pushes his way past her.
She angrily sighs and shakes her head.
"You can't be here." she continues to say.
"I paid for this place. So this is my place." he tells her with a shrug.
She makes a show of clicking the safety off on her gun.
"Then I will write you a check and give you my half. Get out." she tells him, standing her ground.
He stalks closer to her.
"I'm not afraid of you, babe. You forget I'm the one who trained you and made you who you are today." he gloats.
"You didn't do shit for me except give me a migraine. Do you forget that I outrank you now? You are nothing, and that has nothing to do with me."
He angrily stalks over to her and pushes her back against the wall.
She keeps the glare on her face.
"You're the one who turned me in. I made you, and you betrayed me. But I'm not an unfair man. Retract your statement, and we'll pretend none of this happened, and I won't have to hurt you." he leaned in closer to her.
"You couldn't hurt me if you tried."
She glares before she grabs onto his arm and twists it behind his back.
She turns him around and shoves him against the wall.
"You think you can threaten me and try to scare me? You're wrong. I'm the one in charge here. You have no say. So get the fuck out of my house before I call for backup, and you lose all chances of getting back out in the field."
She moves away from him so he can turn around.
He glares at her with pure hatred.
"This isn't over by a long shot. You'll be seeing me real soon, sweetheart." he threatens before he storms out of the house.
Natalie follows behind Gil as he storms into the familiar bullpen.
As she rounds the corner, her eyes fall directly on Sammy leaning against his desk.
He hasn't seen her yet as Gil opens his big mouth.
"Do y'all have any idea how close you came to fucking up a six-month surveillance today?" Gil spits out as he storms over to them.
"Yo, Gil, what's up, bro?" Nate greets.
As Natalie follows behind Gil, Sammy finally locks eyes with her.
His eyes widen in surprise.
He stands straight up.
"Nat?" he breathes out.
His gaze is intense before anger replaces his surprise, and he tears his gaze away.
"What's up? What's up is that we've been on this guy for months. And you guys almost blew it." he shouts.
Nate finally notices Natalie beside him.
His eyes widen as he spares a worried glance at Sammy.
Sammy's eyes narrow as he notices how close Natalie is standing beside Gil.
"Who the hell are you?" Sammy asks, standing defensively.
Gil raises his eyebrows.
"Who am I? I'll tell you." Gil takes a step towards Sammy.
Natalie puts her arm out as Nate pushes him back.
"Gil, enough." Natalie commands.
"This is Gil Puente. He's one of us. He's narcotics." Nate introduces him.
"My question is, what are you doing here with him? Aren’t you supposed to be in DC?" Sal questions with a suspicious tone.
"Yeah, I was. Then I joined a task force that is building a case against Trinny Day." she informs them.
"Yeah, we saw you march right in, and it was like a freaking nightmare, man!" Gil exclaims.
"You guys are set up over at Platinum Motor Sports?" Sal continues to question.
Sammy keeps his eyes on Natalie, who refuses to look at him, and it pisses him off.
"We've been set up there for about six weeks." she informs them.
Sammy scoffs and steps closer to her.
"Six weeks? You've been back for six weeks, and you didn't bother to even say anything?"
She catches the small hurt tone in his voice.
"I couldn't, and you know that." she argues back.
"Yeah, well, then how the hell were we supposed to know about Trinny Day if no one even bothers to inform us? We're working a homicide." Sammy snaps angrily.Â
"Yo, man, that's number 2!"
Gil makes a start for Sammy again.
Sammy stands his ground as Natalie puts a hand on his chest to push him back, and Nate stops Gil.
"Gil, man, come on, we didn't know dude." Nate states.
"We'd never step on your toes like that. Come on." Nate states firmly.
"Who the hell is this guy anyway?!" Gil smirks, pointing at Sammy.
Sammy takes a defensive step forward.
Natalie places a hand on his chest, pushing him back.
He doesn't try to move her hand off of him.
In fact, her touch balances him, and it feels like home.
"This is my partner. Sammy Bryant. Gil Puente. And we all know Nat." Nate introduces.
Gil looks between Sammy and Natalie and notices the hand she still has on Sammy's chest.
"Just how well do you know our girl, Sammy?" Gil questions.
Natalie glares in his direction, but she removes her hand and steps away from Sammy.
He instantly feels colder after she moves away from him.
"Alright, I get the hint. No need to glare at me to death. It's nice to meet you, man. Sorry we got off on the wrong foot just now."
Gil throws out the small olive branch.
"So anyway, how you doing, man?" Gil asks Nate.
"Doing great. Just had another baby." Nate gives the news.
Natalie perks up.
"Mariella had the baby?" she asks with a big smile.
Nate gives her a big smile.
"She did. She's really beautiful." he tells her as he pulls out pictures to show them.
"I'm gonna have to call her. Maybe grab some lunch." Natalie says.
Sammy sneaks a peek at her.
He imagines her and Mariella becoming the best of friends, just as he and Nate are.
It would be the perfect scenario to have the girl he's in love with be best friends with his partner's wife.
"Yo! No way! Good for you, man!" Gil hugs Nate enthusiastically.
"You got a whole factory, man. Good for you!"
Nate laughs, and Sammy gives Gil a look.
Gil finally turns to Sammy.
"What about you, man? You got any kids?" Gil asks Sammy.
Natalie freezes and avoids eye contact.
Sammy sneaks a peek at Nat and feels his heart leap as they briefly lock eyes.
"It's complicated." he states.
Gil scoffs.
"Complicated? What kinda answer is that?" Gil pushes.
Sammy just glares at him.
Nate chuckles awkwardly as he glances between Sammy and Natalie.
Gil is quick to pick up on it as he looks between the three of them with a suspicious look.
"Am I missing something here?" he asks, glancing at Natalie.
She pushes his shoulder slightly.
"Come on. Quit messing around." She gives him a stern look.
Gil smirks.
"She ain't even my wife, and she got me on a tight leash." Gil jokes, pointing at Natalie.
Sammy doesn't laugh, and Nate chuckles awkwardly.
"Yeah, alright, moving on. In real notes, the shootout with the Bentley, the driver was our snitch." Gil informs them.
"What's Trinny up to?" Sal questions.
"He's running coke out of Mexico. Gun too, probably. Then he's bringing the money back here to launder it, no doubt in his shop." Natalie informs them, her attention only on Sal.
"Hey man, why don't you guys come hang out with us? We got ATF, FBI, DEA, all on it. We could fold in your homicide." Gil offers Nate.
Natalie's eyes widen as she panics.
"Come on, Puente. I don't think they want to be bored out of their minds with us." Natalie avoids looking at Sammy.
"Nah, man, we'll do it. It'll be like old times." Nate states as he glances between Sammy and Natalie.
"Hell yeah! It'll be like old times, brother!" Gil jokes with Nate again.
Natalie finally spares a glance at Sammy.
Her breath catches in her throat when she realizes that he is already looking at her.
Natalie is walking up the stairs towards her apartment.
She is losing her mind.
Sammy now knows that she is back in LA.
She doesn't know how things are going to go.
She couldn't get the look on his face out of her head.
He looked surprised and hurt that she was back.
She thought she was doing the right thing by ending things and making him hate her, but she misses him terribly.
She stops suddenly when she sees someone standing in front of her door.
The person looks up, and it is Sammy.
They lock eyes, and she swears she forgets how to breathe.
"How did you find me?" she asks as she steps closer.
"I'm a detective, Natalie. It wasn't hard to figure out that you're renting an apartment. There aren't a lot of Natalie Venturas in Los Angeles." he tells her.
"That's not creepy at all." she mumbles to herself.
Sammy pushes away from the door and stalks closer to her.
"How long have you been back?" he asks.
She quickly looks away, knowing he won't like the answer.
"About six weeks." she tells him.
His eyes widen as he scoffs at her.
"Six weeks?! Are you fucking kidding me? Do I not mean anything to you?" he looks sad and betrayed.
"Of course you mean something to me, Sammy. But I knew you wouldn't let me go unless I made you hate me. So I figured you still wouldn't want anything to do with me. I'm sorry." she tells him.
He narrows his eyes in her direction.
"Tammi is pregnant."
He slowly steps closer to her as her eyes widen.
"I went to serve her with divorce papers, but before I got a chance to, she told me she's pregnant. I'm staying with her for the baby. What you and I had doesn't matter anymore. I need to work on my marriage." he finally tells her with a blank look on his face.
She fights the tears and keeps her face as blank as she can.
"Then we just need to be professional. We work together; that's all. We can do that." she tells him firmly.
"Yeah. Whatever."
He brushes past her to get to the steps without a look behind him.
She feels her chest tightening as she quickly unlocks her door.
She's safely behind her door as she finally lets the tears come down.
Place of Birth: Where did your character first see the world? Think about the impact of this place—was it a busy city where they had to fight for attention or a quiet village where everyone knew everyone’s business? This location doesn’t just say where they’re from; it shapes how they see the world.
Family and Upbringing: What was their family like? Were their parents loving or distant? Maybe they were raised by someone other than their parents—a mentor, an older sibling, or even alone. Family (or the lack of it) is usually one of the most significant factors in shaping who someone becomes.
Society’s Expectations: What was expected of them when they were young? Possibly, they were born into wealth, with all the pressure to continue the family legacy, or maybe they were raised to be invisible in a world where survival mattered. How does this influence who they are now? Do they accept or reject those expectations?
2. Childhood Events That Left a Mark
First Taste of Conflict: Think about the first time the character realized the world wasn’t a perfect place. Maybe they witnessed violence or faced betrayal. What was that moment, and how did it stick with them? This moment usually lays the foundation for the character’s emotional landscape—fear, hope, ambition, or distrust all come from these early life lessons.
Childhood Dreams: When they were young, what did they want to be? Every child has dreams—did they want to be a knight, a scholar, or even just someone who could travel the world? Did they have to give up these dreams? How does that lost dream shape them now?
Formative Relationships: Who was their first best friend, mentor, or enemy? Childhood friendships and relationships often create deep bonds or wounds that last into adulthood. Did they have a mentor who taught them everything, only to betray them? Did they lose a childhood friend that still haunts them?
3. The Teen Years: Where They Start to Become Who They Are
Trials and Tribulations: What’s the biggest challenge they faced as they grew up? Was it losing a loved one, failing at something important, or maybe being forced into a role they didn’t want? These teenage years are where the emotional armor starts forming—how did the difficulties they faced shape them into the person they are now?
Education or Training: How did they learn what they know? Were they formally trained by an institution, learning everything by the book, or did they learn through experience, like a street-smart survivalist? What impact does their education or lack of it have on how they interact with others?
Teenage Bonds: Did they have a first love or a first major falling out with someone close to them? These experiences often create emotional scars or connections that they carry with them into adulthood. How does that past friendship or romance influence their behavior now?
4. Key Life Events: The Big Moments That Define Them
Trauma or Loss: Was there a moment that changed everything? Think about a significant loss—maybe a loved one, their home, or a sense of identity. How does this event affect their worldview? Do they build walls around themselves or dive into relationships with reckless abandon because they fear losing more?
Victory or Failure: Did they experience a moment of triumph or devastating defeat? Success and failure leave their marks. Were they celebrated as a hero once, leading them to overconfidence, or did they fail when everyone was counting on them, leading to crippling self-doubt?
Betrayal: Was there a betrayal that shaped their adult relationships? Whether it is a friend, family member, or lover, betrayal often changes how we trust others. Do they close themselves off, constantly expecting betrayal, or try to rebuild trust, afraid of being left alone again.
5. Where They Stand Now: The Present Moment
What Drives Them Today: What’s the one thing pushing them forward now? Is it revenge, the need to restore their family’s honor, or maybe even just survival? Whatever it is, this motivation should tie directly back to their experiences.
Emotional Baggage: What unresolved emotional wounds are they carrying? Everyone has scars from their past—some are visible, others not so much. How do these emotional wounds affect how they treat others, how they react to conflict, and how they move through the world.
Current Relationships: Who’s still in their life from their past, and how do they feel about it? Did they reconnect with someone they thought they’d lost, or are they haunted by unresolved issues with people from their past? Do they have any ongoing tensions or regrets tied to these people?
6. Tying Themes to Their Backstory
Cultural or Mythological Influence: How does their personal story tie into the larger world’s mythology or culture? Do they carry a family legacy, a curse, or a prophecy that hangs over them? How does this influence their interactions with others and their perception of themselves?
Recurring Symbols: Are there objects, dreams, or people that keep showing up in their life, symbolizing their journey? Perhaps a recurring nightmare haunts them, or they carry an object from their past that’s both a source of comfort and pain
7. Character Arc: The Journey from Past to Present
How Does Their Past Shape Their Growth?: Every character has emotional baggage that needs resolving. How does their backstory drive their arc? Do they need to forgive themselves, let go of the past, or accept who they’ve become to move forward?
Unanswered Questions from the Past: Are there any mysteries in their backstory they need to solve? Maybe they’re unaware of their true parentage, or maybe there’s a forgotten event from their childhood that will resurface and change everything.
For the writers stuck describing every single scene transition as someone "walking" somewhere. Some words are repeated across categories since they fit more than one, but those are counted once, so it adds up to 50 new words.

This was meant to provide motivation, but honestly, this is more of a list of ways to make sure you get it done, rather than make yourself “motivated”. Either way, this should benefit you somehow.
In the words of Chuck Wendig, “do not fucking multitask”. Carve out a specific time to write and use it to write. Don’t try to simultaneously write and tweet and check your email. Whether it be 15 minutes or 2 hours, write, and only write.
Take breaks occasionally. You can’t just sit there and fog up your creative lens. Go outside and go for a walk. Go to coffee with your friends for an hour. Do something to relax your brain for a while. It’s the same with studying. Don’t drive yourself up the wall because you feel you’re “on a roll”. Your ideas and plans will still be there when you get back. If you begin to get frustrated or your foot starts to fall asleep, take a break.
Use a rewards system. Say, for every 100 words, you get a piece of chocolate. After eating a regular sized Hershey’s bar, you’ve got 1200 words. Go you! (I personally fine this incredibly useful.)
Have people you trust hold you accountable. Have your best friend (or partner, if you’ve got one) check in when they know you should be writing to make sure you did.
Read books like a writer. Read a shitty book and pick it apart to find what you don’t like about it. Read a good book to find what you do like. Use these reflections and apply them to your own work. Nothing helps quite like learning from other people’s mistakes and success.
Don’t get stuck in the planning stages. You may get really excited while planning a story, that huge plot twist, a minor character’s backstory, etc, but keep in mind that at some point you’re going to have to sit down and hash it out. A lot of promising writers never get past the planning stages, so in the words of my very wise boyfriend: “Just write”.
Write in places that make your creative juices flow. Get cozy in bed with your laptop open to a word document, light a few candles, make some tea, get that incense going, and write. Music really helps to get in the mood as well, and if you would like to take a look at my writing playlist, here it is, free for public consumption.
Keep your mind open to new ideas and changes to your story. Your idea will develop and evolve over time, and the beauty of writing is that you can change anything you want and there are no consequences. If you decide to completely scrap a character, remove a subplot, add one in, or change the plot but keep the same characters, you’re totally free to do so. Nothing about writing is set in stone, so stay open minded to new concepts and changes and, most importantly, criticism. (I won’t elaborate on this because I might end up making a whole other post about this topic in the future.)
As always, this is just a compilation of the tips and tricks I’ve found the most useful in my own experience. They may not help, they may help a lot, it really could go either way or somewhere in between, but all the same, I hope this proves useful to you.
