"would you hurry up already?" i shouted from the drivers seat. flipping down my visor, i wiped the corners of my mouth to remove the excess lip gloss. "relax, would ya?" my bestfriend shouted back. zarielle and i had been friends for more than ten years. she was basically more like a sister than a bestfriend.
seeing zarielle run down the side of the driveway, i violently flipped my visor back into place and pushed my sunglasses down from the top of my head. "you must like being late, everywhere we go." i said rolling my eyes playfully. zarielle threw her purse on the car floor before hopping in and strapping her seatbelt on. "just drive, pain in the neck." she laughed.
"why did your parents leave to hawaii again?" she asked as she placed her feet on my dashboard. as i stopped at a red light, i smacked her ankle. "feet." i said firmly. "and, for the second time-" zarielle groaned and tucked her legs into her chest. "they wanted to experience life more." we were quiet for a moment before busting out in laughter. "your parents wanna experience more? what else could they possibly wanna do?" she asked. i shrugged my shoulders and shook my head. my parents had decided to move to hawaii since they were newly retired. i didn't mind so much because, i was already used to being on my own. i had moved out of their house at eighteen, by choice. i hated their lifestyle. everything they did was so dramatic. designer clothes, luxury vacations, blah blah. stuff i wasn't interested in. i mean, my parents worked hard for their money, don't get me wrong. but, i felt like they flaunted it, a little too much. "girl, idunno. i'm just happy that we'll be in a bigger space. the walls were starting to close in on me in that small ass apartment." the light changed from red to green and i continued to drive. "right. i mean, your parents have everything though." zarielle began. "more than what my mom has ever laid eyes on." she chuckled. "yeah, i guess they do." i replied. "but, they can stay gone forever, for all i care." my bestfriend smacked her lips. "what are two adults supposed to do in a big ass house like this though?" she questioned.
pulling up to our new house, zarielle groaned. "why is this house so damn beautiful? i would never leave here." she laughed. i parked the car in the driveway and looked over at her. "well, you don't have to leave." pinching her cheek, i quickly got out of the vehicle and ran to the front door. "hey! wait for me." zarielle shouted.
"would you just leave me alone?" i heard someone shout from the other side of the street. squinting my eyes, i looked over in his direction. it was a tall, slim, asian man- holding his cellphone to his ear. "how did you even get my new number?" he shouted into the small device. i grabbed my purse, trying not to be in his business too much. shutting the car door, he looked over in my direction for a few seconds. our eyes met and i quickly looked away and ran to the front door.
"sol." i chuckled as i pushed past the front door that was already open. "the tea is piping outside, hunty." sol was already heading towards the kitchen and into the fridge. "what do you mean?" she said pulling out a package of strawberries. "there's some dude outside, screaming on the phone." sol pushed her lips together a blew a quick raspberry. "probably his psycho girlfriend." i chuckled and took a few strawberries out of the clear package. "yeah- poor thing." sol tossed herself on the counter and swung her legs. "so, we can unpack the car- order pizza then watch a scary movie? yeah?" she smiled. "sounds good to me." i replied. "oh- and the moving truck will be here tomorrow morning with the rest of the stuff."
"i totally wont be able to sleep tonight." i said rubbing my eyes as we sat on the porch. "we shouldn't have watched that movie." sol replied, laughing. "never again." as we listened to the crickets chirp, i looked up at the sky. "it gets dark so quickly now. i hate it." sol sighed and titled her head a bit. "yeah- i hate the dark."
watching a car pull into the driveway across the street, i tapped sol's arm. "not us about to witness some more drama." i said laughing. "ouuu-" sol began. "should i run inside and grab some popcorn?" i looked up at her and laughed. "hurry!" tucking my legs into my chest, i watched as sol made a bee line to the front door. the red hue from the tail lights had already disappeared and the drivers side door quickly ripped open. "sol!" i whispered to myself. "you're gunna miss it." a short statured man exited the vehicle and pulled out his phone from his back pocket. he stood there for a minute before shooting his gaze to our driveway. he did a double-take, slightly titling his head.
oh he's kinda cute, i thought.
he suddenly waved and i blinked a few times. his smile was slick and i swear he was smirking. i lifted my hand. didn't wave back, just lifted my palm. his door shut automatically and my jaw instantly dropped. "the hell kinda car is that?" i questioned as i furrowed my brows.
as he walked towards his front door, he disappeared into the house. i started to wonder who the other male was that i seen earlier. "maybe it's his boyfriend?!" i whispered. "what i miss?" sol said turning the corner with a big clear bowl. a few pieces of popcorn fell to the ground, from it being too full. "pft- nothing." i said in a disappointing tone. "i think that was our neighbor's boyfriend." standing to my feet, i reached inside the bowl and popped a few pieces in my mouth. "wait- boyfriend?" she laughed. "a least someone around here is in a relationship."
looking in the fridge, i rolled my eyes. "why would they have food, sol?" i said irritated. "they never cook." slamming the door shut, i placed my hands on my hips. "guess i gotta make a run to the grocery store.
quickly opening zarielle's door, i held in a laugh as she was still asleep. "how this girl sleeps past 9:30am, i will never know."
pulling into the parking lot, i quickly grabbed a shopping cart and made my way inside the store. it was super busy. the atmosphere was quick and i felt like i was in LA traffic. i took a deep breath and made my way to the produce section. picking up a few breakfast essentials, i zigzagged through a few people to make it over to the meat section. "we could have steaks tonight." i smiled to myself.
tapping my finger on my chin, i titled my head as i stared down at the steaks. "so, what am i supposed to get again?" the gentleman next to me was on the phone, obviously struggling with the selection of meat. i quickly picked up what i needed and placed it in my cart. "yeah, but there's like five different types." he groaned in a frustrated tone. i couldn't help but laugh to myself.
men would be so lost without women, i swear.
"i literally have no idea what that means, vernon. the man said tossing his free hand on top of his head. this time i literally laughed so he could hear. his eyes shot over in my direction. "is something funny?" he asked with a slight attitude. "what are you trying to cook, sir?" i said folding my arms across my chest. "filet mignon." he said rolling his eyes. "hm, must be a special date." i pressed my lips together in a straight line as he ignored my comment. "i'm feeling nice." i groaned. walking past my cart, i quickly picked the perfect steaks and slapped it against his chest. "you should probably lose the attitude, by the way. you won't get a second date with that." skating over to my cart, i pushed past him. "have a good day."
turning down the cereal isle, i stopped in front of the Trix and threw two boxes into the cart. "oh, shit. the milk." i laughed. as i turned my cart around, sir with the attitude was standing right behind me. "jesus!" i shouted, as my soul almost jumped out of my body. "what is your problem?" i mumbled squeezing the handle on my cart. "my bad, i didn't mean to scare you." he quickly responded as he held out his free hand. against his chest laid three packages of steak. "i just wanted to apologize." he stated. "i was a little frustrated back there and i didn't mean to sound like an asshole." staring at him for a moment, i waved him off. "it's fine. i don't even know you. whatever." swinging my cart to the side, i started to walk past him.
"would it be weird, if i asked for your help?" he cried out. his tone was slightly desperate. i snapped my head back at him and furrowed my brows. "help with what?" i questioned. the man held up the steaks and smiled a bit. "cooking these.." i snorted. "so you can take me to your house and try to end my life? no thanks." pushing my cart out of the isle, he followed behind me. "please- i know i'm a stranger. but, this is really important and i literally don't know anyone here." he began. "not my problem." i sang back at him. "listen lady-" running in front of my cart, he held his hand out. "i'll pay you." our eyes met for a second. i could see his soul pleading.
thinking for a minute, i smacked my lips.
"$500." i smirked. "what?!" he shouted. "you're crazy." laughing a bit, he ran his hand through his hair. "fine, good luck. i hope she likes burnt steak." as i began to push my cart, he sighed and forced me to stop. "fine- fine. $500."
holding out my hand, i titled my head. "no take backs." i said firmly. he agreed and shook my hand. "no take backs." he repeated. "you can also pay for my groceries, since my eggs are probably getting warm now." i said with a slight attitude. the man chuckled then sighed a bit. "you're very feisty- you know?"
walking up to the checkout line together, he placed my things on the conveyor belt and turned to face me. "i didn't catch your name, by the way." he said chuckling. "sol-" i said with a slight smile. "pretty name." his eyes sparkled as he looked at me then turned back around, taking out his wallet. "so- you're just not gunna tell me your name, you werido." i said rolling my eyes. looking over at me from his shoulder, he eyed me up and down. "wonwoo. my name is wonwoo."
