this is even true on the supposed internet home of all queer and autistic abused kids everywhere; tumblr is rife with these kinds of attitudes, there's just a different line as to which forms of violence are simply edgy and gratuitous, and couldn't possibly be representing an experience that's typical for the artist/intended audience of something.
like. i have friends who started binge drinking and doing hard drugs at 13. i know people who regularly attended supposedly "unrealistic" high school parties full of hard drugs and sexual abuse starting at 12 or 13. i know people who were held at gunpoint as middle schoolers. personally, i'm someone who has a complicated experience with CSA that i enjoyed and sought out when i was a child, and as an adult i recognize it was absolutely sexual abuse and i was being taken advantage of, but those memories and emotions still objectively exist in my mind. i know people who got kicked out of their homes before they hit double digits and had to survive on the street as prepubescent kids. i know people who were regularly physically and sexually abused as a part of religious rituals.
like! that's just daily life for us, babes! the things held up as criticism of unrealistic, edgy, gratuitous, grimdark media, are things that are just. childhood anecdotes we swap over drinks! and yeah, they suck, and we're traumatized by them, but they're also just... part of our lives!
