At first you think it’ll be easy, you’ll simply turn your attention to other things for two weeks. But by the end of the third day you’re already finding it hard to focus. When you climb into her bed that night and trail your fingers over her hip, she only gives you a knowing look and stills your hand with hers. 

By the first quarter moon, you’re increasingly frazzled. Your thoughts are scattered; your belly is heavy with denial. She never teases you, just gives you a chaste kiss every night before she closes her eyes. You, on the other hand, lie awake for hours, tormented by her scent, her warmth, the remembered softness of her skin—all so near and yet so far away. 

I freeze, my body trembling with the effort of turning my attention away from her. My eyes flutter shut. What I find is jumbled, overwhelming, but I breathe through it while she holds me steady. “Anticipation. Arousal.” My breath catches. I try to bite my tongue but the next word spills from my lips anyway. “Love.”

I’m tempted to add fear to the list now that I’ve bared myself so completely, but when I open my eyes her smile is so radiant the feeling withers in my chest. “Well done,” she says. Her hand leaves my hair and glides down to cradle my cheek. “Your honesty is beautiful.”
