Nice dogs you've got there, Mr. Van Der Linde
I know you
Why did I only JUST learn that âEveryone thinks youâre Dutchâs petâ IS ACTUALLY CANON???? And up until this point I thought it was just a fucking fan trope because of course John is Dutchâs favorite dog; the way Bill literally says this to him in camp got me ashdkfklskalajsksb

morston just hurts sooooo good if they never even fucked each other and the only bit of intimacy theyâve ever shared together is arthur locking eyes with john through the cut linen of dutchâs tent â johnâs eyes are hollow, wet with tears and red with a young boyâs rage, his jaw is slack, bleeding strangled hymns, his darkly shining hair is splayed over the cot, forms a twisted halo around his skull â arthur feels sick, wants to gag, almost does, wants to run and he almost does that, too, but he canât bear to leave john alone like this, wonders how many times heâs been alone like this â with dutch â and when dutch hunches forward to run his hand over johnâs chest and grasp at his throat his wide frame shadows john, swallows him all up until arthur can only see dark shimmering eyes peering up at him over dutchâs shoulder, refusing to look away and it all makes him feel deathly ill, stomach twisting, the stench of rot in his nose and when john cries and cries and dutch groans, hitches himself flat to john and holds fast there, lips twitching into a smirk, heaving with pride, arthur trembles with anger â fists clenched at his sides, fingers twitching because he canât decide whether he wants to beat dutch to a bloody mess of fractured bone and mush or fire into him until his body is so full of holes thatâs itâs nearly shredded in half â but he just keeps watching and he hates himself for it, and when dutch finally lifts off the boy and moves across the tent and john stays there, torn and shivering, glistening with sweat and tears and perversion, warmth, not hate, not fear, fucking warmth returns to his eyes that never once strayed from arthurâs.
We always talk about Arthur and Dutch (because why wouldnât we?) but I think John really is Dutchâs focal point in ways that the second game doesnât really get across apart from in a few camp interactions (âI know youâ and âLet me do the thinkingâ âAnd i just do the hanging?â âYou just do what i tell youâ and âi ainât ever gonna leave you son, donât you ever leave me. knowing that is paradiseâ really stand out here as obvious choices). Like John was described in the game of the year edition of the rdr1 guidebook as Dutchâs âgreatest success and ultimate undoingâ and we just need to sit with that a moment. His greatest success? His ultimate undoing?
Long after the insanity and the bloodlust and whatever else set in, it was John who was the reason he died. It couldâve been Arthur and it couldâve been the Pinkertonâs or the law or anyone, but it was partially John and partially himself and that in of itself is solely John!! John has never been anything without bits of Dutch instilled in him I am dragging my hands down my face guys I will come back to this thought later.
