Childe didn’t realize what he was getting into when he arrived back in Liyue six months after the Golden House incident. Most everyone had moved on by then, though he did get the occasional stare as he wandered the streets of the city that was becoming his second home. The Tsaritsa wanted him here for reasons he wasn’t sure of quite yet, but he tried not to think about it too much. While he wasn’t quite ready to settle down, it would be nice to stay in one place for at least a few weeks. 

“Master Childe!” Andrei said with a grand smile and a bow the moment Childe entered the Northland Bank. Today, the man was dressed in an ankle-length, black coat with gold trimmings and tie. His brown hair was mostly hidden under a matching gold hat, and Childe thought Andrei looked the pinnacle of Fatui wealth. Odd. The last time he’d been here Andrei had worn much more muted colors. “Welcome back to Liyue. I hope you’ll find your accommodations acceptable.” He held out a key which Childe took, tossing it back and forth before catching it out of the air and shoving it into his pocket. 

“An actual place to stay!” Childe said with a grin. “Already an improvement.”

“It was mentioned to us that you may be here for quite some time, “ Andrei said. “A bed here at the Northland Bank wouldn’t be suitable.” He reached into his pocket and held out a folded slip of paper. “You’ll find everything you need at this address, but I hope you’ll indulge me a little longer.”

“What for?”

“Our agents have been attempting to collect a debt for a few weeks now,” Andrei said. “But I’m afraid the woman they’ve been chasing is stronger than we thought. Even the groups we’ve sent have come back with more than their pride broken.” 

“A runner, eh?” Childe said. “I’ll take care of her.” A debtor capable of fighting multiple Fatui agents at once? Childe was happy to take on that mission himself. Maybe she’d put up a fight, one he’d been sorely missing since his loss at the Golden House. 

“Actually, we were hoping you’d convince her to join us.”

Childe raised an eyebrow. “She’s that good is she?”

“So I’ve heard, but I was hoping you would assess her abilities,” Andrei bowed again. “She’s been spotted around the Dunyu Ruins, and three of our more skilled agents left a few minutes ago. You might be able to catch the fight if you hurry.”

But Childe was already halfway out the door. “You got it, boss!”

“It is written in the stars that the 8th Archon will make their return,” Mona’s eyes were filled with a mix of anxiety and glee.

“An 8th Archon?” Paimon chirped, “I’ve never heard of such a thing. How strange.”

Aether glanced at the chubby toddler who knew seemingly everything about Teyvat. Paimon’s remark only seemed to make the atmosphere tense. It was strange that the heroes of Liyue and Mondstat were gathered, but now the mentions of an Archon returning? The traveler was nervous. Tension was thick across the room as Venti and Zhongli rose from their seats. Even the adepti seemed to be thrown off by the words of the astrologist.

“If what you say is true,” Zhongli’s amber eyes were distant, “Then we have much preparing to do.”

Venti nodded, “The 8th Archon is the God of the Stars. The Celestial Archon has been missing since the Archon war and was a dear friend.”

“And,” Xiao began, his expression even more serious than usual, “That vision can never fall into the hands of the Fatui Scum.”

Aether leaped to his feet, grinning at the all too serious deities. Paimon was knocked back by his sudden movement and cried out, but was ignored.

Background: You’re suddenly isekai-ed to Teyvat one day in the place of the traveler. Every time you die, the timeline restarts to a set moment before you died. You’re stuck in an eternal timeloop, and when you clear certain plot points, your “respawn” point moves further up the timeline. You’re a threat to the natural “law” of Teyvat, so monsters are naturally more aggressive to you. Both the Abyss Order and Dainsleif view you as a strange anomaly that needs to be “fixed”. After all, Teyvat won’t allow you to stay dead, and time itself shifts to keep you alive. All the gods and adeptus are well aware of what’s happening; they’re the only ones who know when the timeline restarts.

Dropped in the middle of nowhere, with no clue as to what happened or what to do, your first death is quick and painful when you’re shot full of arrows by a hilichurl archer after you stumble too close to their camp. It is witnessed by one person: Venti, who arrives far too late. You’re bleeding out by the time he finds you, and he knows he cannot save you.

He holds your body in his arms, brushing back your hair. “I’m sorry I was too late,” he says, nothing but a stranger in your first death. “I’m sorry I couldn’t save you.” His eyes are a thousand miles away; is he really talking to you? You’re too far gone to care.

“This is the only thing I can do for you,” Venti says. He opens his mouth, and sings. His song wraps you in its embrace, easing your pain and calming your fear. Your eyes close… only to reopen with a start, your hands trembling as you search your body for arrow wounds that should be there; you can feel the pain, haunting every step, but there is no blood, no bruises, nothing to show that you had just died. In fact, you woke up where you had first been dropped in Teyvat.

This time, you avoid the hilichurl camp where you had just died, and when you stumble across Venti, his eyes widen. “You should be dead,” he says. 

Something is horribly wrong, and the both of you know it. Still, he does his best to reassure you.

“Maybe the archons love you,” he suggests cheerily, “to give you another chance at life.”

If this is love, then the blessing of the gods is a cruel thing.

Synopsis:

In ancient Liyue folklore, it is said that when the spirits of departed children are unable to move on from the land of the living, the Guardian of Lost Souls will guide them to the afterlife through story, play, and song. Over the millennia that has passed however, the original tale of this benevolent being has long been forgotten. Instead, it now serves as a cautionary tale used to keep children from misbehaving. “Do not linger at night for too long,” they say, “For the spirit will come and snatch you away.”

Chapter 1: Mingyu

Xiao had always been a quiet individual that lurked in the shadows as opposed to walking in the light.  His duty required it.  Which is why he was even more confused when he came across a child no older than four years old in the middle of nowhere.

Abyss mages had led a coordinated attack against a village at the top of Wuwang Hill.  All that remained were that of burning buildings, the ash remains of villagers, and destruction.  Xiao had come across the scene several minutes after the monsters went on their way; he had been scouting the area after feeling a disturbance of power in the air.  

That’s when he met you, a lone child on a death bed of mud and soot that was bleeding heavily from her side.  There wasn’t hope for you–or at least when it came to mortal standards of healing and medicine.  Xiao had a millennia of experience under his belt when it came to collateral damage regardless of whether he was the cause or not.  His weary years during the Archon War hardened him, so he wasn’t surprised at the pitiful sight before him.

He was, however, taken aback when he knelt beside you.  Surely a wounded child would be crying at the very least.  You just lay there singing a lullaby to yourself as you stared up at the dim sky.  The sight was unlike anything he’d ever seen, and it compelled him to reach out and brush the hair away from your face.

“You’re a strange one,” he muttered to you with a confused expression.  "One minute I think I understand humans, and the next, mortals like you show up to confuse me once again.“  

"You’re pwetty,” you smiled.  You couldn’t feel a thing.

“Don’t worry.  I’ll see to it that you live a long life.”  He placed his hand over your eyes.

The two of you sat atop of the cliff-side overlooking Liyue and watched as the lanterns floated lazily above the ongoing festivities. Feet dangling over the side, you could still make out the different music the musicians alternated between clearly. Some slow songs that people partnered up to and some stranger but more upbeat music that got everyone laughing and spinning in circles.

Zhongli, Childe and Aether all continued to explore the festivities. Zhongli for the first time as a human, able to appreciate and enjoy it as one for the first time. And Aether as a stranger to this world who never took part in it before. Then there was Childe, who chauffeured them around and paid for everything. You found it strange he was so willing to pay for everything. After the mishap of not having enough Mora for the mask you got. He dumped a coin purse of Mora into your hand and walked off with the other two.

You weren’t one to complain and bought yourself some more dango and something almond tasting for Xiao. The guardian who felt uncomfortable spending so much time in close company with humans, afraid his adepti energy would harm them. So the two of you bought your respective treats and sat on the cliff’s ledge, watching the festivities.

Xiao’s still sat tied around your head, pushed up and off to the side so you could eat at your sticky, sweet treat.

“Xiao?” You asked.

From your peripheral, you saw him glance at you, prompting you to continue.

“You didn’t seem too familiar with the festival, have you ever been to one?” You took another ball of dango off the stick and chewed it quietly.

“No.” He had no reason to, if anything he felt it was a disaster waiting to happen. His adepti energy mingling so close to humans for no reason? He would hurt them, so the pros never outweighed the cons.

“Have you ever danced?” You asked, kicking your feet and setting your bare dango stick onto the tiny tray beside you to toss out later.

“No.” Xiao furrowed his brows.

You turned your head to look at him and smiled.

“Dance with me.”

“No.” He frowned, and you laughed. A sound like music to his ears, far nicer than what they played right now.

He watched you as you stood up and dusted the front and back of your attire off before you turned to him. Holding out your hand to him and he glanced between you and it, the frown still in place.

“C’mon, you can’t say you don’t like it when you’ve never danced before.” You encouraged him to take your hand by wiggling your fingers.

Xiao opened his mouth, about to refuse again—

“Please?” You asked once more, rather sheepishly.

—and his mouth snapped shut. Despite the trepidation swirling in his gut, he took your hand and let you pull him up to his feet. Letting you awkwardly manhandle his arms and hands into place while gently nudging his feet here and there.

“Is there a specific dance we are doing?” He watched you curiously and to his hands you held. The music shifted tempo into another one of those upbeat songs people spun and ran around to.

“Nope!”

He blinked, wide eyed. About to ask what in the world you were doing when you abruptly yanked him forward and he grunted, stumbling to keep up. A laugh spilled past your lips as you moved about like the humans did down below. Spinning the two of you around while you held onto his hands, shifting and shuffling to the beat. He struggled to keep up, to not step on your toes and not trip over his own feet as you twisted them around. A smile on your face that made his heart race, a sudden rush of anxiety in his stomach. He didn’t want to ruin this for you.

“It’s okay, Xiao, it’s just us! You can let go!” You let go of his hands and he almost reached out to yank them back. Stumbling to a stop as he watched you jump around and dance to the music that echoed from below.

He watched you with wide, surprised and curious eyes as you moved. A heavy thumping in his chest as the anxiety lifted off his shoulders. There was nobody else, it was just the two of you and he trusted you. He was not Liyue’s Guardian Yaksha anymore; he was your Guardian Yaksha, and he told himself wherever he went, he hoped it was with you. So he shook off the uncertainty he tripped over and let the wind rush over the two of you. Kicking up dandelion seeds and pink petals of blooming cherry trees. The wind lightened his step and when you held out your hand a second time; he reached out to grab it.
