One of Simons defining traits to me, is being selfish. What he says about Fillimund station is constantly changing. It was an accident, that wasn't supposed to happen, I'm just the only one who got caught, I didn't know THAT would happen. I believe him, that he didn't want that outcome, but I don't think it was out of good conscience. Just self preservation. Even a cult and life long indoctrination couldn’t stomp that out of him. I think his constant change of approach to how he talks about it is part of this. Just constantly trying to find the right angle to finally squirm his way out of this. I don’t say this in a negative sense. On the other side of the coin, I find it insanely inspirational that in a world as fucked as his, he still has the drive to try to live. Ryland is in the same boat. I’m bummed that they cut Stratts monolouge about him being a coward from the movie because god, that punched me in the gut. Ryland is a relatively dishonest character (I’m not saying this in a negative tone, it’s more of a neutral thing here.) In the on-earth scenes, he’s consistently dishonest with himself in his motivations. Yes, he cares about his kids, but there’s always a lot more going on in his motivations, most of which come down to selfishness. A need to prove he was right, a desire to live, a desire to be important while not actually being in a dangerous situation. Saving the black box, literally ripping off his own arm to do so, turning around to rescue Rocky despite the fact that it’s now fully within his grasp to go home, is completely antithetical to their core driving trait of selfishness. GOD the character development is so good GAHHH I know I’m not saying anything new. I just can’t stop thinking about them

Side note, I've finally read/watched project hail mary and I'm about to be a problem. Thinkin about a bloodymary au where they DO return to earth. Simon sees not just earth, but earth from a very long time ago, in his time. He sees the sun, and a blue sky. When getting out of the ship he sees more people then the entire human race, in his world. He sees not just trees, but grass, flowers, weeds, animals. Mods give this man a panic attack.
