Breathtaking ‘green cathedral’ of living willow is hailed as first of its type in UK

Stefan Jennings and Sophie Courtiour  put the finishing touches to their unique  8 metre-high willow cathedral

Britain’s first ever cathedral sculpted entirely out of willow is due to open in Somerset this month.The ‘green cathedral’,  in Longrun Meadows, Taunton, measures 30m by 16m (98 ft by 54ft) and is made from living Somerset willow.The awesome structure has been designed and created by Somerset-based sculptors, Stefan Jennings and Sophie Courtiour.Both have been responsible for many willow sculptures throughout the UK and overseas, but this is by far their biggest undertaking to date.The project’s design stage started in spring 2010, with the 10-week long construction  beginning early in 2011.Stefan, who studied art at Somerset College, said: “Creating the cathedral has been a serious test for us due to the dimensions involved and the nature of the materials used.“The opportunity to create this type of structure is something we have both been working towards for a number of years and as far as we are aware nothing on this scale has been made before in the UK. “We are over the moon with the final result, which is every bit as breathtaking as we had hoped at the design stage,”

Sketches in the Air: Delicate Figures Drawn in the Air with Welded Steel Rods by Gavin Worth

Artist Gavin Worth (previously) works with repurposed steel rods and wire welded into two dimensional sculptures appear as illustrated line drawings. Some of the artworks are meant to be viewed against the dramatic backdrop of the sky, or can be amplified through projected light and shadow. Other pieces, like his 2012 sculpture Thirst, have a kinetic component and can be rotated to reveal opposing images.

San Francisco Multifunctional Loft

Pre-fabricated, multifunctional loft designed for a rather contained 500-square foot apartment. Designed by Charles Irby and Peter Suen, the solution is a two-story area set for many uses; a work office (set with white erase board), walk-in closet and guest bedroom can all be discovered through unique arrangements.
