Ushuaia, Tierra de Fuego Province. A summer trip to the coldest part of Argentina. Must do: Mountains, Glacier Lakes, boat trip to the last lighthouse with amazing wildlife on the way, National Park, The 'End of the World' prison museum with its own train ride and of course an asado or two along the way. We caught up with an old school friend of Valeria too. If you don't mind the cold you have to visit!

Mendoza Province: A trip to Mendoza with the family. Mendoza is home to the vineyards of the famous Malbec wine and we tried one or two.... I recommend Bodegas Cecchin, the organic Malbec.....I left that vineyard even happier that I was going in....The high altitude of the region is the main reason for the success of the Malbec grape - it's also very close to the Andes and the famous 'Christ of the Andes' near the Chilean border. We tried to drive up a mountain path in a very unsuitable hire car and had a very hairy moment....After putting ourselves back together, I went up the next day another way and of course, alone. Amazing views of the Andes, the glaciers and the Christ himself. There is also the Puente Del Inca, a geological miracle worth visiting and hundreds of kilometres of abandoned railway lines built by the British over a hundred years ago...If you come to Argentina, go to Mendoza.....
27th March 2014 - After a long struggle that only makes you wonder at a woman's capacity to suffer......Little Catherine was born in the Clinica Modelo Hospital in Quilmes - Life changed the moment she was passed to me and I signed her Birth Certificate as a proud father....Papá at last! A few years late Mum, but here she is and named after you....
Buenos Aires Capital
Today (24th August) is exactly 1 month since we arrived. After several weekends hiding in Quilmes, trying out the butchers and wine-merchants, we decided to head into 'Capital' to see the City Centre. We went by bus and it took 50 minutes to get to the centre. Cost = 27p. Ridiculous.
The buses are mainly Mercedes Benz from the 70's, are very 'classic' and are driven VERY fast! Maybe in time I'll also jump off while its still moving like the seasoned locals do.........
There was a moment's 'drama' when Valeria jumped up and headed for the front of the bus to ask the driver if we had missed the stop.... I thought she was actually getting off - so I got off too at the rear door......Realising Valeria had not got off, I tried to get her attention from the pavement, faced with a bus full of smiling locals no doubt wondering who the foreign twat was. We were safely re-united at the next traffic lights and I was happy I could provide a little entertainment.
After a brief ride on the run-down underground we got to 'Plaza de Mayo'. This is where the Spanish set up the first 'Town Hall' and administrative system in the late 1800's before being expelled in 1810 when Argentina declared independence.
Getting in to the Presidential building (The Pink House) was free! Magic! The guard noticed my Spanish/Swiss accent and asked where I was from (as everyone does) When I said the UK he asked if I could recommend him to the Queen to patrol Buckingham Palace! I imagine it pays better.......Funny chap though and when he finished his chat on his Blackberry he let us in.
FAMILY REUNION AND NIGHT NOISE:
I won't miss the incessant buzzing of garage doors and lifts around Quilmes...It's that sound lorries make when they reverse and its 24/7!!! While others sleep I have to listen to these things and wait for the rhythms to overlap like Steve Reich's Piano Phase... The fantastic 1960's style buses sound like enraged elephants when they pass by every 10 minutes too.
The weekend arrives and we decide to get a 'Remis' (cheap version of a taxi) and head to San Justo to see Valeria's family. This was quite an experience. The car was a Renault 11 from the 80's and the driver was an old chap who got lost constantly on the way. He also seemed delighted to meet his first British person and wanted to tell me everything about the city. He called me 'Shell' for some reason but I quite like the name.
Once we arrive we meet all the family, although the older generation slipped away before the camera was taken out. Denise and Grisel (1st photo) finally got to meet Kiara!

ARRIVAL:
After losing each other at Madrid airport and having to involve the Local Police.....We slept all the way through the 12 hour flight from Madrid! (briefly stirring to savour my complimentary red wine from Iberia) We finally arrived on the 24th July 2013! Incredible views of the city as we arrived and a beautiful sunrise (More on those later)
After leaving our things in the temporary flat at 'The Towers' we went to the Campus to see my new place of work and Kiara's new school! Here it is!
St. George's College Campus - Opened in 1898 with 6 students - Views of the original building (now the preparatory college) the rugby pitch and the Georgian Chapel. The School looks like a little piece of 19th Century England was airlifted over and dropped in the middle of Quilmes, Buenos Aires. Home from home!
Rugby, cricket & hockey are the dominating sports at the school (quite rare in a football mad country) and I am already regretting leaving my Cornish rugby top in Spain. The first rugby match I can attend is next Saturday and of course there will be an 'Asado' to keep spirits up! (An Asado is basically a barbeque where very, very fine meat is roasted and washed down with beer or Malbec, the preferred national red wine)
We made it and are NOT disappointed!
