Our Alaskan land and sea trip
So we’re in our mid sixties and never having been on any cruise, decided to go for the big one, The Alaskan cruise of the inside passage. Our friends who went before advised us to do the land excursions first, so we did. 2 days in Fairbanks, 3 days in Denali National Park, 7 days cruising from Whittier and a couple extra days in Vancouver at the end.
Day 1-leave for Fairbanks at 4am in a GD blizzard from Utah, almost didn’t make it to the airport! Arrive at hotel around 3pm with a whole bunch of people.. finally get room, bags in and DINNERTIME! Some nice fresh Alaskan fish and meet a couple of new friends.
Day 2-Ahhh.. an extra day with no big plans. Just our good friend Mary who is going to show us some sites. But it all started at 815am when we went to breakfast at a great locals spot, then to a Alaskan wooden bowl factory store (very cool!), downtown for some history, saw the Forged in Fire Alaskan knife shop and the pioneer park. After some more driving around we went to Chena hot springs. Hydro power demo, hot springs soak, animals and a cool ice museum. The grand finale was the Hilltop diner, where THE ICEROAD TRUCKERS EAT! Great pie! Having a very early day tomorrow, when we head via bus to the great Denali Park, we call it a day!
