Kiara wants to prefix it with unfortunately but there’s something in the faint blue of his eyes that she can see. Something vulnerable. “Yes. I like, like you. Take you round the world and then to my parents for dinner like you. Please don’t sleep with anyone else like you. Please can I sleep in your bed wherever possible because it makes me calm like you.”

She hadn’t realized she’d moved; all she knew was that she was stomping towards JJ, up to her ankles in ocean water, and that she’d thrown her hands on either side of his face, cutting him off in mid sentence.

Her lips smothered his words, whatever shit he was going to say fading into her.

JJ went went slack, lips still as stone and chapped as she brushed them against hers. One, two, three seconds passed, the hammering of Kiara’s heart ticking from exhilaration towards horror.

But then his hands were moving. One splayed out against her hip, and the other slunk up her back, sinking into the curls at the nape of her neck and dragging her closer. Closer. Closer.

The movement caught her enough by surprise (or maybe it was relief) that she let out a little breath against him. JJ didn’t miss the opportunity to slip his tongue between her lips, coaxing something like a moan from deep in the back of her throat.

She nods. “You won’t look at me, J. You won’t sit with me or sling your arm around my shoulder. You avoid being alone in the same room with me for too long… It hurts.” Her hand curls into a fist at her side, voice rising slightly. “So yes. I told you I miss you. Because I did. Do. Because you’re too fucking stubborn to—“

She doesn’t even see him move. One second he’s there in front of her, as angry and desperate as she is, and the next his lips are on hers.

JJ’s kissing her.

His hands are cupping her cheeks and he’s yanking her against him and he’s kissing her. It’s sudden and it’s exhilarating and it’s lightning that she can feel zip clear down to the tips of her toes.

“Yeah.” She looks down at her lap. “I feel like I’ve fucked things up for real this time, though.” “You didn’t.” “You pulled away.” “You were high.” She wants to protest, but he speaks before she does. “And you know… no Pogue-on-Pogue macking.” She can’t contain her snort. “It’s safe to say I’ve butchered that rule.” JJ pushes his knee against her thigh. Downs the last of his orange juice. “What? Just because you’ve collected all the Pokémons?” She bursts out laughing, shoves him away again. “Hey, fuck you!”

Kiara scrambles out the way as JJ approaches, the hand outstretched. “JJ Maybank – no – take your pee hand away from me.” “I mean, technically it’s your pee hand-” “Is it not enough that I provided the pee? If you don’t stop, urine trouble.” JJ says ayyy in appreciation and stops chasing her around the deck.

The branch she’s sitting on bows as JJ sits next to her. “Your mom loves you,” his voice is quiet, but firm. “And she’s great. Really hot, too, actually,” Kiara swats at his shoulder and he shrugs her off. “But she – she says some fucked up things, I think. And that’s her issue, not yours. Because it doesn’t matter what you look like because – you’re really into sea turtles and the ocean and you’re like, really fucking good with engines and boats and you can sing and play that stupid ukulele and you can look after people and make friends literally anywhere you go. You’re the cleverest person I know.” She’s staring at the side of his face but he’s got his gaze focused ahead, over the snow dusted trees and the expanse of water. “And all that,” he continues, and he still hasn’t looked at her. “All that is worth more than the size of your clothes.” She wants to push him off the branch and she wants to scream wildly, until her throat’s sore and she can get rid of the ache in her chest and in her stomach and the voice in her head that is unrelenting and harsh. Instead, she lays her head on his shoulder and he wraps his arm around her waist. And she eats the damn sandwich. “I’d still mack you if you were the size of a house,” he says after a long pause. Kiara sighs and pushes him off the branch.

Kiara tries to contain the smile that curls her lips, but is rather not very successful.

She feels almost high on relief, something light and happy coursing through her veins. She’ll blame her lack of filter on that, and the way she very unsubtly eyes JJ up and down, on that. “Clearly, I don’t.”

‘From the corner of her eye, she sees Pope squirm. “They’re flirting.”

JJ rolls his eyes, looking more than slightly annoyed. “We’re not flirting.”
