“Hey, do you remember…” there’s a pause as John B hands over the bottle, and she hesitates long enough that she worries he might take it back, but then it’s in her hand, their fingers brushing before he knocks the air right out of her with, “when you kissed me?” Kiara chokes on the half-sip of lukewarm beer in her throat and stares at John B with eyes gone wide. There’s a teasing grin on his lips despite the dried streaks still on his cheeks. He looks at her over his own beer, sipping. She doesn’t mean to, but her voice croaks a little when she finally finds her words, “Yeah… yeah, I remember.” “I told JJ,” John B says.

The fact that I saw the trailer came out and didn’t even bat an eye. Remember the days when we would try to calculate it down to the possible release hour because we were so excited?!

“What happened between you and the Kook princess anyway?” Kiara looks back at the lights above her, watching the yellow and blue flickering in time with each other. They remind her of JJ’s eyes. In the dancing firelight of The Boneyard. In the sunlight reflecting off the ocean. In flickering candlelight during storms at the Chateau. In the glow of the lamp tonight outside the pharmacy. She hears the quiet flick, click, of his lighter. Sees flames light across the side of his face from the corner of her eye. And wonders if his eyes have that golden quality right now. Before she can turn her head more to look, he flicks his lighter closed and adds, “Last I heard, you two were running Figure Eight together.”
