The stethoscope in the party
Jessica leaned against the kitchen doorway, wishing she were anywhere else. Tyler’s house party was everything she had expected: pounding music, red plastic cups abandoned on every surface, people laughing too loudly and dancing like they didn’t have a care in the world. She didn’t know half of them, and even if she did, she doubted it would make her feel any more at home.
The only reason she had come was Ashley.
From the very first day of college, Jess had found herself orbiting Ashley like the sun — unable to escape the warmth of her smile, the ease in her voice, the fearless energy that seemed to follow her everywhere. Jess had never said a word, never dared to, because she had no idea if Ashley even liked girls. Keeping the crush secret felt safer than watching it shatter.
Her heart jolted. Ashley appeared in front of her, grinning like she had discovered buried treasure. In her hand dangled something unexpected — a stethoscope.
“Look what I found in Danny’s room,” Ashley announced proudly. “Well… borrowed. We should try this out together.”
Jess blinked. “Together?” she echoed, praying her voice didn’t betray the thudding in her chest.
Then, before she could think better of it, she added softly: “Only if I get to listen to your heart.”
Ashley didn’t hesitate. She placed the stethoscope into Jess’s hands and lifted her shirt. Rainbow-striped bikini straps glowed in the party lights, a silver belly button ring sparkling just above the waistband of her shorts. Jess’s breath caught. If that isn’t gay energy, she thought, I don’t know what is.
Her hands moved automatically. Eartips slid into place, the cold metal chest piece pressed against warm skin.
The moment froze. The music faded into a dull throb. Jess heard nothing but the vivid, insistent beat of Ashley’s heart, strong and close and impossibly alive.
She had never used a stethoscope before, and the clarity shocked her. Every beat seemed to pound inside her own chest. Faster than the bass. Faster than her own breathing.
Her face must have given her away, because Ashley laughed. “Don’t look at me like that — my heart can’t take it!” she teased, bumping Jess’s shoulder.
Before Jess could reply, a voice interrupted.
“Okay, girls, don’t move — this is perfect!”
Brianna stood a few feet away, camera ready, eyes sparkling with delight. Jess wanted to protest, but for once, smiling wasn’t difficult. She couldn’t help it. Ashley smiled too, effortlessly radiant.
When Bree wandered off, Jess turned back. Ashley was still there, still smiling at her, and suddenly the rest of the party disappeared again. Jess closed her eyes, leaning into the heartbeat echoing in her ears. So much better than the music.
But the rhythm didn’t slow. If anything, it grew wilder. Jess opened her eyes. “Your heart… it’s still racing. Are you okay?”
Ashley nodded, then shaped the words silently with her lips:
Jess froze. For a heartbeat, she thought she’d imagined it. But Ashley’s eyes were steady, unflinching.
Her own breath caught. A grin spread helplessly across her face as she mouthed back:
The stethoscope confirmed it — Ashley’s heartbeat soared, pounding frantically in Jess’s ears. And suddenly Jess was moving forward, closing the distance, pressing her lips to Ashley’s.
The kiss was tentative for only a second before it deepened, certain and real. Ashley’s heart hammered faster than ever, and Jess thought she might never take the stethoscope off again.
The room erupted. Cheers, whistles, applause. Their friends had seen it coming for months, maybe longer. Jess and Ashley — finally.
Even Danny stayed quiet about his missing stethoscope, whether he recognized it or not.
Bree, naturally, caught the moment. She lifted her camera and captured their first kiss perfectly: Jess with the stethoscope in her ears, the chest piece still pressed to Ashley’s chest, both of them smiling into the kiss, surrounded by a sea of clapping, laughing friends.
In that picture, there was no uncertainty left. Just two girls, finally brave enough to stop pretending. Jess and Ashley smiled at each other, and for them, the rest of the world melted away.
