The Energy of Internet Things
The Internet of things (IoT) is swiftly coming into the status quo of new technologies and features for existing technologies. Artificial intelligence, connected home devices and much more are all creeping there way into our technological society without a budge from consumers because who doesnât want a lightbulb that knows your feelings and the weather and your sleep schedule. Consumers will flock towards these devices for an easier and better quality of live persuaded by advertising and customer reviews. Drop cams and smart devices are always popular on holiday shopping lists, but even with all these perceived added quality and ease of use for day to day tasks there still remains a big question of how and why these devices need to be looked at from a policy point of view. The most recent DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) which sends out as many requests to a particular server from as many connections it has in itâs network (usually in the thousands) over and over to flood the system, has shown the inevitable vulnerability of the IoT. This time hackers went through peoples home security cameras that donât have any sort of added security on them to reach the entire eastern seaboard. Multiple websites and services were down simply because servers were overloaded with requests. Most of those systems do have internet security built in, but consumers donât change the default passwords on them so anyone with time to look up the information can get into multiple systems all at once. Added security in these devices in not only necessary, but needs to be required by the Federal Trade Commission, especially at the rate of adoption these devices are receiving. Another point I wanted to make was from an energy consumption perspective. With more and more devices using up an electrical charge or more energy than before, thereâs going to be an increase in the energy needed to power these devices. My hope is that a need will arise from an individual level to the federal level for greater research and implementation of renewable energy to power all these devices in a world where even your couch and your glasses need to be plugged in or powered. If a large portion of the population moves toward a household or lifestyle that requires 80% of their things to be connected to the internet to preform intended functions, we might have a bigger problem with energy consumption than security.
