HR 9495 is going back up for voting. All non-profit orgs are in danger.
Under H.R. 9495, any tax-exempt organization that criticizes the government could have its status stripped away arbitrarily by a designation
The Committee on Rules is meeting at 1600 EST on 18 Nov 2024. The agenda includes HR 9495.
If this bill passes, the Secretary of the Treasury would have the power to strip any non-profit group of it's tax-exempt status with no due process.
If you are part of the fandom community and you are in America, please contact your reps and ask them to vote NO on HR 9495.
Okay, now that it's been a few days, and I've had time to process what's happened, it's time to dig into what to do next
Simply put, vote in your midterms. In 2026 33 senate seats will be up for grabs.
*All* house of representative seats will be up for grabs. All 435 of them. Do you know what Trump can do with a congress that's against him? Not much. In 2026 there will be an opportunity to shut this down and give him as much trouble as the republican congress gave Obama. A blue congress means no confirmation for supreme court appointments. It means possibility of impeachment *and* conviction. It means he can be taken out of office, it means that in two years, if enough people vote, he will be effectively shackled
You know what else happens in 2026? Local and state elections. Are you in a state that's dangerously conservative? You can change that. The fact is people don't turn out for mid term elections. They just don't. So even in red states, if enough liberals, progressives, and independents show up, there is an opportunity to take back your state governments.
But the work starts now. Get involved locally. Vote in city counsel elections. Vote for local judges. Vote for sheriff!! Did you know in most places, that's an elected position? You can choose who runs your law enforcement.
Vote for mayor, vote for governor, vote for state legislators. With this administration, the states will be the ones deciding things. Make sure you're creating a place you want to live in. You do have that power. There are several 'red' states that have a higher number of registered democrats than the number of people who voted for Trump. If those people vote in the midterms, then we have hope
This isn't about Harris or the national democratic party and what they've done wrong. This is about your local chapters, the people in *your* communities. This is about your future and the future of this country. Hope is not lost because there are still so many things we can do, and the midterms are the best shot we have at turning this around
Hey, I just want to throw this in here for anyone anxious about the election tonight.
It's likely gonna look really rough the first few hours after polls close- it's gonna look scary like Trump is winning- but don't freak out yet!
The reason for this is just that areas with smaller populations tend to vote more conservative, and because of those smaller populations they get finished counting their votes sooner, and therefore they're reported sooner. (This is called a "Red Mirage" btw)
And the areas with larger populations tend to vote more democratic, but they also in turn take longer to count all the votes because of the larger population size, and so they get reported later.
Which is why you're gonna have people (not reputable news stations, mind you) calling it for Trump early, and yelling "Stop the count!" (like last election) later in the night/the following days, once the "blue wave" starts crashing in because all the larger cities are finally turning in their counts.
They can only tell you the "projected winner." It just takes far too long to count all the votes for the election to actually be called the same night as voting day. So don't get too anxious too soon tonight!
Anyway stay informed

I'll gladly reblog posts reminding people to vote, but PSA: "this candidate sucks, but" is not a good, effective strategy. I will not be reblogging posts like those, and you guys should stop making them. It's not just because, with Kamala Harris in particular, 1. a lot of reasons "progressives" online dislike her is misinformation, 2. most legitimate reasons people have for not liking Biden don't apply or apply significantly less to her and y'all are just failing to look shit up. But it also just does not do anyone any favors to kneecap people's enthusiasm right from the get-go. People shouldn't have to be enthusiastic about the Democratic candidate to be motivated to stop a fascist, with a platform (Project 2025) that promises to fundamentally alter basically every aspect of American life for the worse. But the fact of the matter is that some people do care about that. You aren't helping by dampening those people's enthusiasm! Just say "you need to vote for Kamala Harris because xyz." The "I hate her but" or "even if you hate her" is just selfish bullshit, that centers your feelings, your need to perform this (faux) progressivism for your dash over any political end you're supposedly working for with that post. It makes it clear that the effects are not actually that important to you relative to your own image. It sucks. Stop it.
You can only reblog this today.
