Transhumanism and Achieving the Singularity
Technology is a mechanism of dialectic disclosure through which man has the potential to research, evaluate, and manipulate Nature as he sees fit. Existing technologies are subject to similar practices, as humanity continues to study and refine human-designed systems and mechanisms. As Aristotle's Politics demonstrated, investigating the philosophical foundations of a stateâs form of government would simultaneously reflect the human nature of the ruler and the ruled. It would seem that to inquire into the intrinsic qualities of different technological innovations, however broadly defined, is to engender a deeper understanding of those who use them (i.e., humanity). The emerging science of human enhancement, and its underlying philosophy of transhumanism, seeks to change human nature by developing the technical capability to transcend any and all natural limitations. That is why Ray Kurzweilâs âThe Singularity Is Nearâ really fascinated me this week, especially the transhumanist approach the author takes to the issues he discusses. Labelled the âworldâs most dangerous ideaâ by some critics, transhumanism and its intentions are worthy of consideration, as those who ascribe to the Singularity are often influenced by the principles of transhumanism. Ambiguity and uncertainty find themselves at the heart of the debate regarding what Julian Huxley, the creator of the term âtranshumanism,â described as âthe fullest realization of manâs possibilities, whether by the individual, by the community, or by the species in its processional adventure along the corridors of time.â
Transhumanism promises to enhance the freedom of the individual through advancements in technologies that simultaneously benefit the human race as a whole. As a result, the nature of that emancipation is dependent upon public knowledge regarding the prospective consequences said advancements have for the individual as well as society. Speculative transhumanists often fail to anticipate the social change that necessarily follows the development of new technologies, or, if they do, predictions are often from the perspective of a Western elite. Such practices fail to adequately define the end result of this new wave of technological innovation, deferring determination to âan autonomous and self-directing telos.â One need only to look at the the printing press, an invention whose existence facilitated the Protestant Reformation, to see technologyâs power to perturb. The Thirty Years War which ensued resulted in the Peace of Westphalia, a series of treaties that defined the modern concept of state sovereignty. How transformative human enhancement will be for human society remains to be seen. However, given the historical development and diffusion of technological developments, two possibilities are likely: Either (a) transhuman technologies will exist proprietarily on the market and will only be available to those who can afford it, or (b) the state will determine the nature of enhancement on an egalitarian basis, as a public good. Serious consideration of these potential outcomes is necessary as a way to uncover otherwise unforeseen consequences. While predictions are almost certainly incorrect, the very act of reflection prepares us for the future.
Libertyâs centrality in transhumanist thought allows for the assumption that the individualâs freedom of choice to self-improve would necessarily extend to the market. If access to human enhancement technology is determined by proprietary, market-based systems; inequality has the capability to become entrenched. Genetic modification will join together with material goods as the dividing factors separating the rich and the poor. Scholarly investigations into unequal access to medical technology in Canada examined the availability and effectiveness of invasive cardiac procedures among those from a diverse range of socio-economic backgrounds. Unsurprisingly, researchers concluded that those with more money waited less, had greater access to the procedure, and survived longer than the economically disadvantaged. Finding themselves genetically inferior to the wealthy, to politicians, and to the stateâs domestic security force, the impoverished will be forever trapped, and may be considered âlesser,â as a subspecies. With a misguided prioritization of the agency of the individual, humanityâs biotechnological pursuit of perfection has the disastrous prospect of permanently constraining the economically disadvantaged. Globalization, with the establishment of exploitative, trade-dependent economies in third-world countries, has already stratified society on the basis of unequal access to technology. As a result, a practical transhumanism must recognize the need for cooperation and collaboration to ensure stability.
If the project of perfecting humanity is to take place on a global scale, government forces such as the United Nations may step in, seeing the development of transhuman technology as a public good that should be equally available and administered by an international body. Political theorist John Rawls thought, that when given the capacity, societies have a responsibility to ensure the eradication of physical inequalities. Despite apparent egalitarian intentions, this method of implementation reveals another troubling aspect of human enhancement: Who determines the new genetic standard for humanity that scientists are able to impose upon future generations? Where is the line differentiating a âbadâ genetic factor that requires improvement from a âuniqueâ characteristic developed culturally? If we distribute genetic modifications equally, will such egalitarianism be transposed to the market, resulting in a redistribution of wealth?
