While this message is true for every child, you are who I had in mind when I wrote it.

Love is awful. It’s awful! It’s painful! It’s frightening. It makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself, distance yourself from the other people in your life. It makes you selfish. It makes you creepy, makes you obsessed with your hair, makes you cruel, makes you say and do things you never thought you would do! It’s all any of us want, and it’s hell when we get there. So no wonder it’s something we don’t want to do on our own. I was taught if we’re born with love then life is about choosing the right place to put it. People talk about that a lot, feeling right, when it feels right it’s easy. But I’m not sure that’s true. It takes strength to know what’s right. And love isn’t something that weak people do.

For example... "I don't mind when your friends come over, but I need you to give me at least 24 hours' notice. If that's something you can't give me, then please meet your friends somewhere else." "Hey, we've been together for years now, and I'd really like us to get married in the near future, but (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), it seems to me like you're not really interested in marriage. That's okay, but I need to know what you really want, because if it's not marriage, I think it's best we go our separate ways." "I can't come over this weekend, but does next weekend work for you?" "I don't feel like we're ready to get an apartment together just yet, but I will be happy to give you a drawer, so that you can store a change of clothes, toiletries, and whatever else when you come over."
