I have shifted towards painting them and creating according to what I want and not what I think others would like to view. It’s more about what makes me happy than what makes others happy. I have done pieces that I want to convey certain messages but at the same time if I don’t like the message I’m not gonna paint it or create it.  I think it all depends on how you prepare yourself on medias and other things. If you have a persona of being uptight and unreachable then people will view your artwork differently. This is why I would like an anonymous or even unrecognizable art galleries where I can display artwork. People don’t recognize you and even if they do they may not understand why you created the artwork.

I think that the ability to sketch, even poorly, is very important. However there are artists that are very successful without even picking up a pencil. Personally I find it satisfying to try and even sloppily sketch out a painting or design so that I can get an image in my head. One of the risks I tend to take is not thinking about the consequences of just putting paint on the canvas. In my own artwork I get to a point where I’m trying to control every single detail and it just can’t happen. I personally don’t have the patience to sit in meticulously paint every single detail. I love the paint really look as well as how my artwork comes out when I just feel the mood as a paint instead of trying to control it. 

Art and society is very important and I feel is either extremely uplifted or extremely hated on. There is a super positive and an low negative. Either you are successful or you’re a struggling artist with three jobs. Well we have come along way with art being viewed anywhere and everywhere and not just in a gallery, I feel like a lot of the public still only thinks of art as belonging in museums and galleries. I have not really looked into art in the church but I’ve heard a lot of different interpretations and views on how it is introduced. I know it has definitely shifted from the time of the renaissance and cathedral paintings to coloring books in Sunday school now. As long as I am able to portray a emotion or make people think that is how I went to make people remember my work.

I have experimented with a lot of mediums and I find that I enjoy 3-D work a lot. I have always known how to crochet but never considered it art really until this class. I also have dabbled in ceramics and really love clay and being able to make art with that. I still come back to painting though whether you watercolor, acrylic, or oil paint.  I think that I’ve had a negative affect of media on my artwork. This is because I tend to get discouraged if I see that someone else has done it. However I have learned and I am much better about now that I can still make things that others have made in my own way. It doesn’t make it bad or uncreative.

Keeping myself motivated interesting in my work can be hard especially during the semester. But most of the time I force myself to create. Whether that be just painting for the sake of painting or drawing for the sake of drawing. This forces me to practice my craft because that’s the only way I’m going to get better is by practicing. Motivation doesn’t necessarily have to be strong at all times in order to create.  Art can definitely provoke change and transform our way of thinking. It does so by making us think  It sounds so simple but at the same time we do nothing without thinking. So in order to observe, create, and talk about art we have to allow it to change and adjust how we view things.

I would consider some of my work autobiographical. This is because most of the things I paint are things that of happened, places I’ve been, or things that have meaning to me. People who know me would be able to understand why it’s important to me so it is an expression of myself not just an expression of a movement or feeling. I also have very abstract work it doesn’t mean anything at all. But I enjoy making it so it works. I think that history provides context to art. If you look at a painting or piece of art and ask why was that ever popular, you have to take into account the history and time of when it was made. You have to question, “is there a faster way to do it now? “. Been able to decipher art is a very tricky thing to do and everybody has their own opinion. Time just like peoples opinions change. History affects how we view art.

As much as I would like to be able to describe my art style I do not feel like I have fallen into a certain dish yet. Being able to categorize your artwork is something I believe I will be able to do later on in my career but as of right now I am not able to do that. I’m still experimenting and exploring all mediums. I do love painting the most and would probably like to be called a classic or oil painter. For me material is all about what the person is most comfortable with. For me oil painting it’s very easy because I have mass amount of time to work on it and change it.

I think that a person that has greatly influence my artwork is named Deborah Barr. She was the first real teacher/professor I had to teach me how to paint. I had always kind of known but I got to learn real technique and how do you apply them from her. Her style also greatly influenced me knowing that I could use meaningful artwork as well as just paint for fun. I think that distinguishes visual art from craft is its usability. If a craft is something that a mass amount of people can do and use after one person has made it then it is more than likely more of a a craft then art. Not to say there isn’t something artistic about it, just that it’s not meant to be displayed as one whole piece.
