[trips and the official upload of the creepily wonderful vintage 11 minute musical short film Possibly In Michigan dir. Cecelia Condit falls out of my pockets]
after watching the new knives out movie (u.s american movie about american catholosism) me and my mother (neither american nor religious at all) had a chat about how that film communicated the ways in which faith is used and weaponised
and i brought up the tactic used by cults to force vulnerablility->create a sense of shared intimacy->weaponise guilt. because that is something that our perspective character of the priest does very early on into the fim, he reproduces the same tactics that probably brought him into the church, well-meaningly, and finds himself on the recieving end of the guilt and weaponisation of the members of the group he is trying to connect with due to the whole cult of personality situation.
because we both agreed that the protagonist was trying to uphold an ideal of forgiveness and acceptance as a positive model of how faith can function. but i think it matters that he tries and fails to implement the toxic cult like methods of the church because he bought into the illusion of closeness they create, and that this is contrasted with moments of real connection and support in ways that are about empathy not pity.
idk as someone outside of religions who had to grow up seeing their structures drenched in every form of media- it's fun to pick apart a film in conversation with where the flip between faith for community and faith for power happens. the gap between message and actions.
Death in Brunswick (1990) dir John Ruane
me: ah return to silent hill movie, pretty solid! i liked how it felt like a 2008 movie, i think that adds to the vibes, it's pretty good at stripping down the game's premise into a movie narrative similar to what the first film did! Sure the monster scares were less effective but it didn't look bad either, and unlike the first film it didn't have sean bean scenes that were inserted later and break the pacing. I wonder what other people are sayin-
uh oh..........
i also just think the bad wigs and stilted game style dialogue are camp, sorry

Television is not the truth. Television's a goddamned amusement park! Television is a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of acrobats, storytellers, dancers, singers, jugglers, sideshow freaks, lion tamers, and football players. We're in the boredom-killing business!
