maybe i'm going home

For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving… maybe I'm going home.

Anyways the strand of hair scenes are genuinely sweet and the chemistry between Irene and Vincent is genuinely delightful. I’m incredibly picky about my romantic plot lines and theirs is done incredibly well.

But to touch on the strand of hair scenes again, we see that at the start of the film genetic status matters to Irene. It’s why she offers Vincent a strand of her hair to get sequenced , even if she knows that hers is not very good because of her heart condition. This idea of genetic status being important to her is then further extrapolated on when she takes (iirc) one of Vincent’s “borrowed ladder” hairs to get sequenced. And she’s upset that it comes back societally perfect!

Irene is meant to be the surrogate for society: outwardly put together, but internally there are perceived flaws. She wants to be better, but also believes that that’s not possible. She buys into the hierarchy for better or worse.

And yet, her mind is changed by Vincent. Vincent shows her that she doesn’t have to be her sequencing. His lie is actively being revealed and she starts to see him as an equal.

By the end of the film, she doesn’t care what his sequencing says. That parallel where she tosses his strand into the wind is one of the most (if not the most) important scene in the whole film.

That scene also parallel’s nicely with the last scene with the doctor, where he tells Vincent that he hopes that his story will make life better for him genetically unmodified son.
