Idk I feel like at this point all my writing kind of sounds the same but I mean here u go another BFF au because what’s new ! Weirdly enough I’m listening to the Teenage Dream album n sobbing so !!! If you listen to this it hurts that much more.
“This is arguably the second worst day of my life,” You sigh drunkenly and when Jungkook moves to comfort you with an arm around the shoulder you glare at him.
“What was the first?” He asks.
“When we were ten and you said you couldn’t come to my birthday party but really you ditched me to watch Sky High with Taehyung even though we were supposed to watch it together.” You say and Jungkook winces. “You two were my only friends so no one showed up to my party except my cousin Annalise.”
“You know about that?” He prods gently.
“Yes, Jungkook we’re best friends. I know about literally everything.” You rise to your feet, “But I mean, I don’t think us being friends anymore is like a thing now so it’s fine.”
“Well wait,” he says trailing after you, “Is this about …. what happened in Taehyung’s room?”
“No, Jungkook it’s that you told me you didn’t see me sexually. You compared me to a houseplant,” you shrug his jacket off your shoulders and he picks it up off the ground.
“Well how was I supposed to know you were serious when you said you liked me? In all honesty I didn’t even think you liked guys up until a week ago,” Jungkook argues and you look away so he doesn’t see the hurt that flashes over your features. Jungkook offers you a sheepish smile, nudging your shoulder gently with a closed fist, “We’re ___ and Jungkook I mean we’re partners in crime. The life of the party. I’m best friends with you because you’re not like other girls—you don’t freak out about breaking a nail or dress like … like this.”
He gestured to all of you and you look down. Between the skirt you had agonized over actually wearing out, for hours and the sparkly nail polish your sister had taken the liberty of doing herself you thought tonight was a sure thing. Because in every fairytale ever you were the one who got the guy—you were the underdog, you were the one who was supposed to get some magical makeover and have the person you’ve been pining over for years finally notice you.
“But you like girls that dress like this,” You point out and he looks away.
In the words of Katy Perry (yikes), this really wasn’t like the movies.
“You know what Kook, breaking a nail fucking hurts first of all,” you say angrily, “And second of all you’re a dick! You couldn’t have said one nice thing? Even Jimin said I had a nice ass which, granted, not what I was going for but sure I’ll take it. From the second I walked in all you’ve done is make fun of me and my hair and my makeup and this stupid skirt and… and…”
“Oh God,” you breathe on a bitter laugh, you press the heels of your hands to your eyes as thought it’ll magically make the tears go away. “Seriously?”
“Are you okay?” He asks and to his credit he does look genuinely concerned.
“No, I’m not,” You say honestly and you swipe at your eyes, “I’m not because you’re an idiot and even now you can’t take it easy on me. I know you always say I’m one of the guys but I’m not, Jungkook. I’m a girl. So yeah I like guys and I like pretty things and I own makeup even if I don’t wear it out because I can’t figure it out so it just sits there and every now and then I look at it and God I sound so pathetic. Jesus Christ, I’m leaving.”
“Wait! Don’t go home like this. You’re upset and drunk,” he grips your wrist, “Can’t we talk about this in the morning?”
“No Jungkook, we can’t,” you inform, “Because I want to forget any of this even happened. I want to forget about you, honestly. So if you could just give me that I’d be grateful.”
“I’m not letting you go home like this,” He says firmly. “Let me drop you.”
“You don’t let me do anything and I already said no. Let me go,” you grit out but his hold on you is tight.
“It’s dangerous for a girl to walk home at this time,” He insists.
“Oh now you see me as a girl?”
“Have you always been this difficult?” He snaps, “I already said that—“
“And I said I don’t care what you said, so let go, Jungk—“
You both freeze, having clearly forgotten the third part to your trio—Jungkook lets go of your arm hastily and you hold it close to your chest.
“Can you give me a ride home?”
It’s raining by the time you and Taehyung manage to pull out of his driveway and despite it all you found it comforting. The weather, the soft hum of Billie Eilish in the background (he was in a phase), Taehyung.
“So?” He asks, and your heads pressed against the window of his truck.
“How’d it go?” He never takes his eyes off the road.
“How’d What go?” You sigh.
“Telling Jungkook you’re in love with him? Getting that first kiss you won’t shut up about?”
A small smile creeps up on his face and he turns for half a second to look at you before turning back to the road. You’re a little shell shocked. You loved your best friend but for the most part he was in his own little world. He always had been. Of the three of you Taehyung was the most chill—Jungkook was the jock, you were the socially awkward one and Taehyung was the weirdo who smoked way too much pot to function. In all honesty you thought you’d done a pretty good job at hiding your crush but then again maybe Jungkook was just oblivious because even Taehyung had caught on.
“What?” He teases, “I didn’t think you were wearing a skirt for me. Unless…”
“I wasn’t.” You say immediately, “Sorry Tae—I just didn’t realize you….”
“Noticed you?” He cocks a brow and your quiet friend is unusually chatty tonight.
“I notice a lot of things about you,” he points out, “It’s cute by the way. Pinks really your color.”
“Seriously?” Your jaw is slack.
“Yeah,” He nods, he clears his throat awkwardly, “You’re… you look cute.”
You’re quiet for a long beat before you punch him so hard He nearly swerves into the oncoming lane.
“What the hell was that for?” He groans.
“I wasn’t!” He argues, “I’m being serious! I think you look like, really pretty right now.”
“I’m wearing powder blue eyeshadow I look like I stepped out of a bad eighties movie,” you point out.
“Blues my favorite color,” he says easily, “And I’m pretty fond of the Rat Pack.”
You choke on a laugh and it’s a little amazing really, that even after all this Taehyung can squeeze a smile out of you.
“There she is,” he tears his off the road long enough to grin at you. “You look weird when you cry. So only smile from now on, yeah?”
“Oh God,” You yelp, eyes wide in shock, “When did you get so—“
“Cheesy,” you correct and Taehyung laughs with a shrug. “It’s amazing you’ve never had a girlfriend.”
“Hey now, just because I’ve never had a girlfriend doesn’t mean I’ve never been with any girls. Jungkook’s not the only ladies man,” he points out and you gag.
“That’s disgusting.” You inform and lean back in your seat, a warm feeling in the pit of your belly as you look at Tae. He’s wearing a floral print blouse that looks like he thrifted it out of the women’s section in a goodwill (knowing him he probably did) and a pair of brown pants that shouldn’t have been doing it for you and yet here you were—checking him out. “How did I never know this about you?”
Taehyungs quiet a long moment.
“Honestly?” He asks, sparing you a glance, “Sometimes it felt like you were too busy looking at Jungkook to see anyone else.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Your brow knits as he pulls up to your house. Taehyung shuts off the car and leans his head against the headrest.
“It just means that maybe while you were chasing Jungkook you were being chased too and didn’t know it,” he says softly.
He couldn’t be saying what you think he was saying. This was Taehyung. Your Taehyung. He was the pretty but oblivious type, there was no way he could seriously be saying that—
“I’m gonna kiss you now,” he says softly and when you blink he’s leaned across the center console. He’s right there and you didn’t even see him coming. Come to think of it, you meant that in more than one sense.
His lips are petal soft against your own—gentle, unassuming like Taehyung and he was right. You never noticed. You never really saw him and that scares you, it scares you to think you could have met him feel the way Jungkook made you feel this whole time. Invisible, the opposite of noteworthy, someone who just wasn’t worth seeing. So when he kisses you your hand comes to his jaw gently, not because you pity him or because you needed the ego boost after being flat out rejected but because kissing Taehyung, weirdly enough, felt right.
When he pulls away your lips are swollen, cheeks flushed with excitement.
“It’s okay if you don’t like me back, but I wanted you to know,” he says softly. “It’s probably crummy of me to do that while you’re vulnerable but don’t worry I—“
“No,” you say a little too loudly. You wince, “I mean… maybe I don’t like you now but…”
“Maybe I can,” you fiddle with the hem of your shirt, “Maybe I can learn to like you like that.”
Taehyung hesitates, “I didn’t say that so you could pity date me.”
“And I’m not. I never agreed to date you anyway I’m just saying,” you sigh deeply, “I’m new to this, even if you’re not and you’re right I never saw you like that but… maybe if you give me time to figure this out, I mean if you still want me obviously. Maybe we could…”
You lift your gaze to his, “Maybe I might like you too and you’re right it’s not fair you told me when I’m a mess over Jungkook so now I have to sort through that and this but I want you to wait for me.”
“Wait for you?” He says slowly. “What does that entail?”
“I need time to get over Jungkook,” you say softly, “so wait for me.”
It takes two minutes for Taehyung to decide his answer is yes.
