Divided into six themes—The Gods, Love and the Body, Warfare, Monuments, Objects and Apparitions, and Antiquity—and with works from Virgil to Natasha Trethewey, the Pocket Poets anthology Poems About Sculpture reflects thoroughly on that art with “the longest memory.” “We might call this book a history of the world told by poets looking at old stones,” editor Murray Dewart writes in his introduction, and Robert Pinsky, in his foreword, favors an even simpler description for the collection: “a good idea.” Marianne Moore looks at Rodin, Thomas Merton eyes the Buddha, and, in the poem below, the great devotional poet George Herbert (1593-1633) imagines his living body in a tomb, to better acquaint himself—as we so often do before stones—with his mortality.
Church-Monuments
While that my soul repairs to her devotion, Here I entomb my flesh, that it betimes May take acquaintance of this heap of dust; To which the blast of death’s incessant motion, Fed with the exhalation of our crimes, Drives all at last, Therefore I gladly trust
My body to this school, that it may learn To spell his elements, and find his birth Written in dusty heraldry and lines; Which dissolution sure doth best discern, Comparing dust with dust, and earth with earth. These laugh at jet and marble put for signs,
To sever the good fellowship of dust, And spoil the meeting. What shall point out them, When they shall bow, and kneel, and fall down flat To kiss those heaps, which now they have in trust? Dear flesh, while I do pray, learn here thy stem And true descent: that when thou shalt grow fat,
And wanton in thy cravings, thou mayst know, That flesh is but the glass, which holds the dust That measures all our time; which also shall Be crumbled into dust. Mark, here below How tame these ashes are, how free from lust, That thou mayst fit thyself against thy fall.

A new poem from Sandra Cisneros, the author, most recently, of the poetry collection My Wicked Wicked Ways, and A House of My Own: Stories From My Life.
God Breaks the Heart Again and Again Until It Stays Open after a quote from Sufi Inayat Khan
But what if my heart is a 7-Eleven after its third daytime robbery in a week? What if my heart is a piñata trashed to tissue and peppermint shrapnel? What if my heart is a peeled mango bearing an emerald housefly? What if my heart is an air conditioner weeping a rosary of rusty tears? What if my heart is Sebastião Salgado’s sinkhole swallowing another child? What if my heart is Death Valley in wide-view Cinemascope? What if my heart is a chupacabrón chanting, Build the wall? What if my heart is the creepy uncle’s yawning zipper? What if my heart is a Pentecostal babbling a river of tongues? What if my heart is the cross-eyed Jesus bought at the Poteet flea market? What if my heart is El Paso, Texas, in bed with the corpse of Ciudad Juárez? What if my heart is unhinged from the weight of its lice-ridden wings? What then for an encore, oh my soul, when you have blessed me a hundredfold?

Poetry
Nobody at any rate reads it much. Your lay citizenry have other forms of fun. Still, who would wish to live in a culture of which future anthropologists would say Oddly, they had none?
Saxon Rivets
Doubtless I should have dressed more sincerely, Sans rhyme, that gentleman’s accessory. Sorry. Had I only more appropriate garb … Gabardine. Gods, why didn’t I … I do not deny Denim, or the quantum laws of Fashion or Chance. Jeans have I also, and other costly folderols Folded in my philosophical armoire. Were I to steeple my fingers in apology, Polish again would indict me. Why don’t I Just Do It Dude. Moot Meter. Read Rude: my new mode. Back to basics: Saxon rivets. This verse — this is not pseudonymy, No, ma’am. This is a suit.
From Pittsburgh to Paris, the poet Jack Gilbert (1925-2012) declared his love for what simply was, however marred by time and circumstance the object of that love or the lover himself. Here is one of his poems in that spirit, with a cameo by Allen Ginsberg.
The Lost Hotels of Paris
The Lord gives everything and charges by taking it back. What a bargain. Like being young for a while. We are allowed to visit hearts of women, to go into their bodies so we feel no longer alone. We are permitted romantic love with its bounty and half-life of two years. It is right to mourn for the small hotels of Paris that used to be when we used to be. My mansard looking down on Notre Dame every morning is gone, and me listening to the bell at night. Venice is no more. The best Greek islands have drowned in acceleration. But it’s the having not the keeping that is the treasure. Ginsberg came to my house one afternoon and said he was giving up poetry because it told lies, that language distorts. I agreed, but asked what we have that gets it right even that much. We look up at the stars and they are not there. We see the memory of when they were, once upon a time. And that too is more than enough.
