Charlotte held her tongue and listened attentively. That Jenny had⌠experience cleaning up magic was intriguing, to say the least. Especially since she was the one to bring up trouble caused by magic. Charlotte glanced over, quickly gauging Jennyâs expression to see just how serious of a question this was. âJenny Du, are you implying Iâm a troublemaker?â She asked, playfully scandalized.
âThatâs right,â Charlotte confirmed, letting out a short laugh at the mention of a pager. She hadnât seen one of those outside a hospital in⌠eons.  âAugust 28th, Iâll give you my number. Then you can call me or beep me if you wanna reach me.â Her reply was just as seriousâan accomplishment, as she refrained from giggling at her own reference. âItâs their daughter, mostly. We went to high school together and she, uh, didnât quite graduate out of the mindset.â It surprised Charlotte how easily she was able to tell a relative stranger these things. It was as refreshing as it was dangerous. Now it was her turn to give Jenny a pointed look. âBut you didnât hear that from me.â
Now that was a cool job, Charlotte thought. âYou might want to try some of the gyms and see if theyâre looking for any new instructors?â She tucked that information away for later, knowing full well how out of practice she was with self defense. In her time back home, sheâd fallen back on old habits and relying on magic. Complacency was more dangerous than she imagined, and the weight of it grew heavier with Jennyâs question.
After a moment, Charlotte finally responded. âI donât know.â She said truthfully. Her eyes kept moving, scanning the flow of traffic, and briefly flickered over to Jenny. What she wanted to say leapt to her tongue, I honestly donât know. It doesnât feel like my being here has made any impact on why I came back in the first place. I think about leaving every day.
Instead, she said: âBut itâs been fun catching up with old friends, I havenât seen some of these folks in years. Once you get settled in you should come out with us some time, itâs always a blast. And hey, maybe youâll find some new clients!â
âMy finely honed instincts say yes.â Some Elders painted the Kingsleys to be a troublesome family, some pointedly suggested to her not to take them as her charges. The same sentiment she communicated to them was echoed to Charlotte. âI can handle a troublemaker,â she said offhandedly, not quite catching up to the intimacy the sentence implied until after she said it.
The Kim Possible reference went over her head and was overpowered by the idea of already getting Charlotteâs number. Jenny beamed unabashedly. âStuck in high school and treats you like it, got it.â It made Jenny curious as to what Charlie was like in high school, if she had been the quiet girl that read in the library or gregarious and on the yearbook with a large circle of friends. Jenny just barreled in and asked. âWere you in her group of friends? Or what group of friends were you in? You know, if you had to define your high school experience by a Breakfast Club trope.â
âI prefer to stay freelance with my classes, so I can pick my schedule.â Usually Jenny just taught her charges, but she was known to take on other students - never for pay. It just made her feel good to know she was making someone else stronger, maybe wiser. âBesides, Iâm content to enjoy Edgewood - for now. Youâre the local, youâll have to show me the best spots.âÂ
Jenny was shocked at the honesty that bled through Charlieâs simple I donât know. Her eyes stayed locked on her chargeâs face while she continued to speak, softening. Jenny could only imagine what Charlie had been going through since Jeremy Danverâs disappearance. âI hope you find what youâre looking for here,â Jenny said in a low voice, returning Charlotteâs honesty with some of her own.Â
âThank you,â Jennyâs voice was emphatic. âFor giving a ride to a stranger.â The whitelighter paused, the gears in her head visibly turning. âBut you probably shouldnât do this again, giving rides to strangers is ill advised.â They started to get closer the apartments as she spoke, her shoulders dropping in disappointment. It always felt like she needed more time, but Jenny tried to remind herself there would be more opportunities to be with Charlie.Â
